DEEPEST Hole in the World!!!!! 30 sec freefall SCARY!!!

- 30+ second drop. Do the math. Located near Dugway Proving Grounds ("Area 52") in Western Utah. They test a lot of top secret stuff underground out there. Banging sound is caused by the rock bouncing off the sides of the hole as it drops. This hole is a few miles away from Dugway's UAV blimp base; the blimp is visible just down the valley from the hole. We dropped a lit bottle rocket in upside down, and we could observe the flash from the report several hundred feet down, so we know it straight for at least that far. What should we drop down next?
UPDATE: On June 15, 2012, we lowered a rock on fishing line down the hole. We lowered it more than 3,000 feet down, and had not yet reached the bottom.
UPDATE: Our first attempt to lower a camera down failed. The camera broke on the way down (rust from the walls got inside the camera and it stopped working).
UPDATE: We purchased a mini low light video camera to drop down the hole. As soon as we get a good weather window, we will find out what is at the bottom!
UPDATE: We have video of the bottom of the hole (at least we think it might be the bottom) here: • Dropping a Camera down... - Розваги
The hole is probably several hundred feet shorter than it actually is due to idiots throwing rocks down it all the time.

I did the math.
d = ut + 1/2at^2
d=displacement
u=initial speed the second he let go of the rock at time = 0. (0 meters / second)
a= acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s/s)
t= time in seconds.
d= (0)(34) + 1/2(9.8)(34)^2
= 0 + 5664.4 meters.
= 5.6 km or 3.48 miles.
Analysis: Due to a large amount of friction on the rock as it was falling and scratching along the pipe, it would have only travelled around 1 or 2km. Because of this, the velocity of the rock would not have been as fast due to friction, therefore the distance travelled would not have been as far as calculated. The reason you could still hear the sound of the rock hitting the pipe from so far in the pipe was that the energy producing the sound could only be transferred into the dirt underground and in the pipe which travelled up to the gentlemen filming and into the camera's microphone. :)
That isn't even remotely correct lol. Its constant contact with the wall would create a very large amount of friction that would slow the rock down exponentially. The hole is probably 500-1000m at most
lysolmax Yeah i was a bit iffy about that with the friction. Ive changed it so a much lower number. Don't worry, you're not the only one haha.
air resistance in such a confined space plays a large role too.

DanTheFryingPan Ummmmm okay then😂just say camera will go bye bye😂
the more things ppl drop down there the less deep the whole becomes. leave it be!
So what's the point of the hole. Or just launch some grenades that only ignite in time and no impact
Joel Kenway you throw a 2in rock down there, the other kid throws one down there, some tourists throw a rock, give it time. those 2in rocks will push to the top if ppl keep throwing shit down there. i'd put something on a string with a light and lower it.
Haukenslush Well you could start the first " hole preservation society " if you want. Make the hole a national treasure. Clearly having people filling holes with rocks is a case of hole vandalism. We can't have that now can we.

Actually and I wish I were joking. The stuff they keep throwing down this hole vanishes. Scary stuff lol

You're quite right, the time from bottom of shaft to top of shaft is 11.8 seconds. So:

s=0*18.2+0.5*9.81*18.2^2
s=1,625m

Voice from the hole."Hey...I'm working down here."
I think it fell out the other side of Earth
Another interesting factor: Have you considered the pressure accrued in the pipe below the rock? With the rock being so close in size to the pipe, air would be limited in flowing around the rock, causing the pressure between the rock and the bottom to increase gradually as the distance decreased. Assuming of course the pipe is relatively air tight. Any ideas on what the pressure would increase to and it's affect on the rock? Also, the fall time is slightly off. Speed of sound
I dunno why, but this fascinates me. What the hell is down there? Is there an end, or does it just kind of pop out of the Earth? Is it an inter-dimensional anomaly?
And why has NOBODY written a shitty creepypasta about it!?

You can't work out the depth in the traditional way, the rocks terminal velocity would be much lower due to the limited air gap to the inner diameter of the pipe, this world effectively increase the air pressure below the rock, also as the rock is obviously ricocheting from wall-to-wall in the pipe that would disperse the rocks kinetic energy therefore lowering the overall terminal velocity. Geekin hard today!
Keith Reynolds id like to revise me earlier guesstimate to about 36 feet a second.
Terminal velocity of a person free-falling is about 120 miles an hour. An average rock has a terminal velocity around 200 miles/h. Assume the bottom of the pipe is sealed and that the diameter of the rock averages a little less 90% of the pipe, then the cross section of the rock is about 80% of the cross section of the inside diameter of the pipe. If we assume a terminal velocity of 200 miles/h for this rock, then the rock will build up pressure below it as it restricts air flow around it, until where it's actual velocity reaches 50/miles an hour. then the air flow around it would be 200 miles/h relative to the rock. With these assumptions one might guess the rock reach its terminal velocity in its first 2.25 seconds of falling.
Furthermore, we have not even looked at the resistance to fair flowing up at the surface of the pipe which increases by the square of the velocity of the air flow relative to the pipe. Resistance to air flow at the surface of the pipe effectively reduces the cross section of the pipe in which air can flow when the rock passes that cross section, thus building up more more pressure below the rock and increasing the relative velocity of the air rushing past the rock between the rock and the pipe's surface.
Then considering rocks bumping random bumps against the wall imparting different spins on the rock might slow its average fall to 50% of its terminal velocity. Then everything considered, It would not surprise me if the terminal velocity for that rock in that pipe was only 25 miles/h or 36 fet per second. and placing the length on the length of the pipe close to 1000 feet or 0.189394 miles and well in the range how deep many holes are drilled
2+2=4
anyone could figure that out .stop acting smart
Keith Reynolds wrong...human freefall " terminal velocity " is very RELATIVE. I'm a skydiver. I've personally been 233mph head down towards the earth under 18k feet. I'm a novice also. A pro jumper went 333mph under 18k feet head down. Then of course the 3 stratosphere jumpers all went over 800mph broke the sound barrier due to less air resistance at that height. 130mph is relative velocity if you are belly to earth and in a stable arch. Or on a tandem skydive the same. Cheers.
+Ross Peplow Hi,
Good points, but I think that solutions enlighten more than adding problems to another problem, even approximate but reasonable solutions.
The "traditional way" (depth=(gravity*time²)/2) should take into account the speed of sound (let's assume it's constant), which is probably an even more relevant factor in the final estimate itself than are the dissipation of energy or variable friction with air in account for temperature and pressure variations, since the sound wave requires some time to travel from the bottom all the way up, while the river clast seems to have a pretty smooth surface and its difference in density with that of air throughout the borehole should remains fairly constant. This holds, considering that the borehole itself shouldn't be that deep (being a ~15cm diameter borehole, probably for water captation or gas emissions/water table monitoring) and assuming it remains almost vertical in its whole. For instance, one could solve the last equation below to yield what I consider an acceptable estimate:
h = vT (h = depth; v = v(t);T = downfall time)
T = Tm - Ts = Tm - (h/c) (Tm = measured time = 30s; Ts = sound travel time; c = speed of sound)
since v(t) = gt (g = gravity acceleration, t = variable time), then if t = T:
2h = gT^2 = g (Tm - (h/c))^2
in the end, you'd have to solve this equation for depth (h):
h^2 - 2(cTm + c^2/g)h + (Tm*c)^2 = 0

in physics ... you would have to take into account the goddamn motherfuckin' echo
+YFLOInternational also the fact that it was bouncing on the inside back and forth which could have slowed it down making it take long to get to the bottom.
The hole is about 4km deep
(1/2 g t^2)
So if i take the lengt of the hole it would reach beyond my nearest city? Its about 4km from my house to the nearest city
I bet the rock bouncing off the sides constantly slows it down though.
its 4.5 km x=x0+v0t+(at^2)/2
x=(at^2)/2
x=(9.8*30^2)/2
x=4,410(m)
נבו חן Are you Sheldon Cooper?
נבו חן The equation is right, although the rock did not freefall as you have to account for fluid dynamics in air resistance; which given that the rock has almost the same cross-sectional area as the hole, would be rather large.
Thirty second free fall is nine thousand feet. But this is probably a lot less do to the fact that the rock is bouncing back and fourth drop a kitten down and see how long it meows

When he first dropped it, it actually sounded like someone bowled a strike lol
This is about 4400 m deep if you didn't count the friction of the rock on the tube. If you do, id say its about half that distance.
I think the biggest factor is terminal velocity of a large rock falling down a sealed pip creating an appreciable amount compressed air below it. I would start with guesstimating terminal velocity of maybe 30 feet a second instead of constant acceleration at 1G. 30 feet times 30 seconds results in close to a more reasonable 900 feet or roughly 275 meters deep.
Keith Reynolds
Here is the deepness of the hole:
h=(g*t²)/2
h=(9.81m/s²*30s)/2
[[ h=4.4km or 2.76miles ]]
I think the compressed air doesn't really matter.
Science f*** yeah!
Tell that to a spit ball in a straw and see how much the spit ball cares about compressed air in a tube. compressed air can accelerate a spit ball just as it can decelerate a stone that is close to the diameter of a sealed pipe, as the air compresses under the weight of a falling stone the pressure difference above and below the stone slows the acceleration down. until a terminal velocity is reached. The hole at best is only a couple hundred meters deep despite the acceleration due to gravity.

Welcome to Aperture Science!
that rock definitely reached terminal velocity
since the rock takes up most of the diameter of the pipe, the air below it gets pressurized as it falls. there's no way it gets anywhere close to terminal velocity. there's also the drag created by bouncing along the sides to consider

The Kola Superdeep Borehole was just 9 inches in diameter, but at 40,230 feet (12,262 meters) reigns as the deepest hole. It took almost 20 years to reach that 7.5-mile depth-only half the distance or less to the mantle.

When u have 30 seconds left to live
Hear that sound? Thats the sound of an unfree fall :P
Poor rock, will never see the sun light again.
"do the math" that rock was hitting the sides and was almost as large as the pipe, so it didn't get close to terminal velocity, also sound is pretty slow (~7 seconds per mile) so when you hear it stop falling it actually stopped several seconds prior.
4410 m. Its simple:-
1) v=u+at, u=0 and g=9.8m/s^2 (data required for free fall)
This will give final velocity with which it would hit the ground. And t=30sec.
v=294m
2)Put it in v^2=u^2+2as
Before you reply.... Yeah yeah I know it could be done simply with s=ut + (1÷2)at^2
