- Here is Solo #3 from a series about free form improvising on the drum set.
This improvisation is based on slow jazz "stretched" timekeeping and soloing. I had been working on some things earlier in the day involving stretching the beat within jazz timekeeping from my book and this is an improvisation on that material.
By free form I am referring to solos that can change tempo, have thematic material and do not adhere to any particular form. This means that you are composing on the drum set in real time. I do this every day and it is always my favorite part of my practice routine. I will post some of these from time to time to give you an idea of how I enjoy myself after working on mentally and physically challenging material.
The drums used in the video are Gretsch Centennial from 1983.
The sizes of these drums are: 18" x 14" bass, 10",12" and 14" toms and a 14"x 6.5" snare. All heads are calf.
The cymbals in this video are all 1940's- 1950's K Zildjian except for a Masterworks 24" Swish/China
Cymbal sizes
21" K ride
18" K crash/ride w/rivets
15" K Hi Hats
24" Masterworks swish/china with rivets
Microphones are two Sennheiser MKH 800's for stereo overheads and an AKG D112 on the bass drum.
A true delight for both, ears & eyes ☺️
Love your main ride,man!!!! Nice
playing!
And that ride😍
Nice dog
We have two Pitties. Best dogs ever!
@@rickdior yep. Eli was rescued from a dog fighting operation (the criminal went to jail)
He’s the smartest dog I’ve ever owned and is so good with people that we had him certified as therapy dog. He’s visited over 2,000 patients and has several awards for his accomplishments.
He’s hard on the coyotes though. His job at night is keeping them away from the birds.
And thanks for what you do. I find the lessons very valuable
Beautiful. Really musical.
Sounds great 👍
Love it! I always enjoy your playing.
Hey Rick, how can I buy your book with the 4 CDs?? The problem: I live in Germany. Is there a download to get it or only shipping? Greetings
