I love how you always put your own spin on illustrations. Your version is definitely more creepy and menacing. I don't dislike the official depictions, but they tend to have a big, grumpy kitty sort of look. So, even though I know they might well rip off my arms and bludgeon me to death with them, I still kind of go "Aww... Who's a grumpy wumpy fuzzy little guy?".

I totally get you, Joshua. This isn't exactly a bugbear that you'd want to cuddle. More fur required! :P

I feel similar about the official bugbear look, it's just ok. Lion makes a ton of sense for a reskin, and the goblinoid features and horns are very worthy of a boogeyman. You also brought some amazing lore elements and came up with a far more coherent culture for bugbears than I've considered for them. Really cool, clever take.

    • @ArcaneForge

Cheers Scott! That's really kind of you to say.
I feel like every time I research a monster, I realise that in my years of play-time I've only scratched the surface of how to get the most out of these creatures. It's always fun to have more lore end ideas for the creatures!

I come out of these videos being able to really visualize these different creatures actually in their world, living their lives. That is an invaluable thing to a DM as you well know.

The last time I used a Bugbear, it was the bodyguard of a Hobgoblin Warlord. The party destroyed him in one round, but he was still a good NPC. But, now I have to change the appearance of all Bugbears. The new design is great!

Absolutely gorgeous version. I love how logical the lion influence is. I also wasn't a huge fan of the "canon" description, and have been picturing something different. Stellar! Even though a big chunk of my party's 5-7 adventure involved bugbears, I've learned so much. My DM clearly invented his own lore, which was still pretty awesome.

I really like what you've done with the bugbear. I personally like original bugbears fine, but I'll definitely use this, maybe as a bugbear that was so brutal and Boogeyman esque that he was "blessed" by the bugbear gods, obviously as a boss to the party, maybe around level 8 or so

  • @kevingriffith6011
    @kevingriffith6011 5 років тому

In my campaign I've kind of repurposed Bugbears into more urban monsters, sort of like the fairy tale bridge troll. They sleep in their hidden lairs in sewers, under bridges or in the cellars of abandoned buildings for most of the day, emerging at night to steal food and attack lonely travelers who thought the streets were safe to wander at night. They're stealthy enough to avoid guards and strong enough to be a threat even when caught. This can also lead to points where the PCs would have to grudgingly work alongside a bugbear to find an even greater threat hiding in the city... as nobody knows the hidden back-alleys and lost sewer tunnels like the bugbear does. This knowledge and innate stealth can also lead them into work as enforcers for a local criminal organization, or leading a smaller one themselves... because nothing could appeal more to the lazy, gluttonous bugbear like being kowtowed to by humanoids and having their every need seen to.

I will say though I do still love the bearish nose of the original as well. Kinda reminds me of the goblins from the old hobbit animated film! Speaking of goblins! it would make my day to see your take on Hobgoblins as well as exploring their lore as well, As I've not been a huge fan of them in the book but love me some goblinoids and would love to see what you do with them to differ them from the other evil races of D&D! ^^

I like the idea of a race of monsters so irredeemable thier entire pantheon is dedicated to exalting thier bad behavior.
I also think it would be neat if bugbears "return" heads of thier victims to the village they originated from in order to extort money, food, and arms from the locals. Imagine being woken up just before dawn as a giant carrying the screaming head of the local horse breeder and demanding tribute if they want the screaming to stop and the head returned.

I had been on the fence between playing a tabaxi or bugbear, as I like the look and concept of the bugbear but the tabaxi has stats I like better
so my thought was play a larger tabaxi that looks and acts more like a bugbear. a saber tooth tiger came to mind with its size an fangs. but your inspiration of a male lion reminded me about their behavior similar to bugbear so I may use that now

Jivaroan Tzantza, or shrunken heads, were created to imprison the soul of the enemy you took the head from.
The Jivaroan people believe in three different spirits, the important one here being the vengeful spirit that arises from a murdered person. Shrinking the head of the person you murdered blocks this spirit from being able to act.
Another reason to create a shrunken head was to force the spirit to then serve the maker of the shrunken head. I see this in D&D terms as the head alerting the maker to danger.
Great video as always, just wanted to put in my two cents!

A note about the Bogeyman: It / he varies DRAMATICALLY. In some cases, it's a spirit, or "haint" in old writing, in other cases a living being, ranging from a relative of Bigfoot, to a sort of werewolf, to a demonic creature. At any rate, about the only constant is that he's usually quite large and gruesome. The local legend claims OUR regional bogeyman was a German immigrant who arrived here in the 1830s. He was kind to everyone, even the old woman rumored to be a witch. Sadly, his wife fell in love with another man, and they killed the husband, hiding his body in a scarecrow. For his past kindness, the witch reanimated his horrific straw-stuffed corpse, and he wanders about, seeking vengeance on anyone who would harm an innocent. The "possessed seeking revenge" thing is typically Southern. We have an excellent market of possessed / cursed items... tragically.
Should you need a new homebrew, consider Ol' Raw Head, a poached witch's familiar (a razorback hog) that borrowed things from his woodland friends, Bear's claws, Hawk's sight, Raccoon's climbing skills, etc., to turn himself into a Lovecraftian horror that drove the poacher mad, sending him howling into the night. The monster was quite smart and not really evil, maybe he'd make a good NPC or introduction to a horror campaign? ... Us ex-colonials and our traumatizing damn legends, eh? ...We need hugs...
