I once had a wizard npc who had one of these underneath his outhouse. The reaction on my players faces was fun.

Good grief, Daniel! That’s so grim but hilarious. I maaaaay try this at some point.

In a game last year our party encountered a gelatinous cube that could talk and was peaceful/friendly made ages before to keep the streets and sewers clean but was forgotten after that civilization was defeated and another city was built on top of the old one. He ended up coming back with us to the surface and joined our party as a follower and it was SUPER cool! Fun idea for the DMs out there...

That's a great idea! Now I totally want to homebrew a ranger pet in the shape of a tiny jelly cube...

Arcane Forge I've always loved the idea of a PC with an Ooze familiar that grows in power and size based on how much it has eaten (and so it can become more powerful as the player levels). It could also gain some of the effects of certain things it consumes, for example if it were to consume enough of a certain kind of poison relative to it's mass for a period of time it's attack would deal poison damage, etc.

If I lived in a fantasy world I would cut a smaller cube out of a gelatinous cube and let the smaller cube roam my house. I would name it roomba

Fun ideas for encounters I thought of while watching this video. (Btw AMAZING ART!)
    1. A skeleton/lich/construct/anything not organic that wants to kill you, inside a jelly cube as armor (This was his)
    2. An army of skeletons/liches/constructs/anything not organic that wants to kill you, inside a jelly cube as armor, with gelatinous cubes they've grown over a long time. (Calvary got nothing on a wall of mobile acid)
    3. A lake/underground pool that multiple jellies have fallen into, making it a living acid lake
    4. A Jelly getting onto a small boat or airship (somehow) making life very difficult
    5. If it can be any size, a town/village sized one that travels the world eating forests and villages. (The entire village has gone missing! and all their stuff is floating...)
    6. A business that produces these by letting them grow to 10 by 10, then trapping them in a tiny room until they do the mitosis and make more, then selling them as composters and traps. (Gelatinous garbage disposal, never worry about outhouses again!)
Just have to say, found your channel last night and I subscribed immediately, keep up the great content!

Cheers John! Let me know if there's another creature you'd like me to draw. I'll be posting more videos in Janurary!
These sound like some pretty awesome ideas! If you get a chance to try them out, let me know how they go!
Thanks for subbing as well. Really glad to have you with us!

I'm a DM and the first player character death that ever occurred in one of my campaigns was caused by the rogue triggering a trap that opened a trapdoor in the ceiling that dropped a gelatinous cube onto him from above. He had ran ahead of the rest of the party while they were engaging some enemies in combat a couple rooms back, so there was no one there to pull him out and save him and he had neither the strength nor the dice rolls to escape on his own, so he ended up dead.
As such, the gelatinous cube will always hold a special place in my heart.

A Warforged has a gelatinous cube as its companion, sliding into the cube for defense while being able to guide it by moving its heavy armour in directions that will pull the cube with it

I would expect the acid damage to come from being digested, similar to when we eat food our stomach is essentially a HCl bath... only just found out about this channel so am bingewatching!

Gelatinous cubes aren't monsters. They're just the maids of the dungeon coming in to keep the place nice and clean.

I love the idea of a gelatinous cube lurking in a maze where it barely fits, basically working as an acidic moving wall the party can't see (maybe they see a skeleton inside the cube and if it's following the party they may catch on because the skeleton is moving).

Juan Pablo Villaseñor i believe that is how they were intended. in the whitebox description of the cube it is described that they are transparent and exactly fit the typical dingeon corridor.

It's all about framing. The way you can see this creature, is that they are part of the first eternal living things. They're an expression of life itself adapted to a niche that no others can do (the first true children). They were here first, and will be here long after we die.

The fact the barrel didn't dissolve. Wood is organic. Must be very recent or very resistant wood.

    • @ArcaneForge
      @ArcaneForge  6 років тому +10

The barrel was made of pure sapient pearwood, which is hardier than most types of wood, so it'll be bubbling in there for about a year. AKA, good point, I'd not thought of that while drawing ;)

It depends on the cube. I had a DM I was playing with and my metal weapons were corroding but when I used a wooden club the club destroyed the cube perfectly fine.

Where can you find that it takes 15x15x15 ft cube? I thought it just said "Large ooze", and I thought Large means 2x2 squares (10x10 ft)?

He's a fun little thing to do with this particular monster make it so the actual jelly of this thing is flammable and I mean highly flammable is normally found in sewer systems and that sort of thing which is normally a bad idea to use fire down there anyway I wouldn't recommend doing it to new players but so for example if a high level party comes across one of these things and just happens use a fire spell on it it can be quite funny XD

You mentioned that the gelatinous cube doesn’t have a clear source of inspiration. It might have been inspired by shoggoths, which are blob-like monsters conceived by H.P. Lovecraft.

It makes a great room trap......If it's released from a room at the end of a long " L " shaped passage way, and the entrance to the room closes and locks behind the players. They have to try to pick the trapped door each turn.....or DIE. Great for first time players...
Also, I'm having a hard time understanding WHY, all the homemade cubes are made opaque and with texture. The cubes are supposed to be crystal clear, and only detected by the junk suspended in them or sound.....
