    I recently retired and am NOT planning on moving but have been decluttering like I am. I spent the first year slowly going through things a cabinet, drawer or closet at a time. Also removing stuff from surfaces. Pieces of furniture have gone too. Wow what a difference! Now I’m in year 2 and rethinking things I’ve saved that I still haven’t used so I guess I’m starting the process over. Best of luck in your move. Your calming voice and demeanor are perfect for a Sunday morning.

    When the non stick coating is ruined, pfas, also known as toxic forever chemicals, seep into your food. I would really get rid of pans with ruined non stick coating, or even buy a cast iron pan to avoid those chemicals

    Last move I made the best tip I used was to put all of my hanging clothes still hanging on hangers but put the clothes down in one large black bag and tie at the base of the hangers. Then you can lay all the clothes flat in your car and then just hang them up as is in your new closet. No washing, boxing, etc. So quick and easy!

    Ok.. I have to pause to comment.. " clearly we have a jar problem"!!! 😂... I'm not the only one???!! Yay!! .. I save jars!!! Waaaaay too much.. my kitchen cabinet was actually bowing.. I filled an entire huge cardboard box... The recycling bin.. even donated the " nicely shaped" ones.. and I still have a plastic bin in my storage outside for florals, candles, decor etc... I have a problem!!!! Good to know I'm not alone! 😅

    I know how is it to move with a very little stuff (I had to escape from the war in my country), and the biggest challenge was really what to keep and what to leave (I didn't get rid of anything, because I am planning to come back 😢). But in the long run only the documents and the money are two things that matter when you move.

    We move from a bigger house to a small house in June and we also move ourselves.
    It was not easy, at some point I disconnected my brain from the process and just put my body in auto pilot. We thought we did not had enough, but ohh boy.
    That experience and now living in a tiny house has make us go to a even bigger declutter. My advice to anyone moving is to please please get movers, even if you’re a minimalist

    I'm from the states and we have "buy nothing" facebook groups in many cities where you can put stuff up for people and they come get it from you. It's a good way to get rid of stuff and make sure it actually goes to someone who wants it. It does take a little more time but it's easier than selling and again ensure stuff goes to a home since lots of thrift stores throw out inventory since they are inundated with stuff.
    Spare towels, bath towels, blankets, extra sheets, even extra clothing like tees make great packing material!

    In 2014, we were going to move ... and then didn't! However! When I was packing, I thought to myself, "Do I really want all of this stuff in our new place?" The answer was a resounding 'NO!' and thus began my decluttering (I'm sure our neighbors thought we were moving lol!) We had a rainy day yesterday and it's going to be cloudy today. I organized our main bathroom and a little bit in my kitchen!

    Labeling boxes on the top and sides is good but can still be a challenge to find those items you need immediately. We had just a couple days before we needed to be back into our homeschooling schedule so I wrapped all of our curriculum and supplies with our stash of wrapping paper which probably wouldn't have done well in the move anyway. Made the boxes easy to recognize. No reading necessary. And if you have outside help you can just tell them to place those boxes together. And they don't have to be wrapped like a gift, just around the sides.

    I laughed when you held up the colander because I had a similar steamer insert that does the same thing and like you I kept the steamer thingy and dumped the colander.
    I gave up baking a while ago and 2 years ago I watched Josh Becker and he mentioned 2 things that helped me unload a huge amount.
    He asked the question - if you didn’t have this item what would you use in its place? All of a sudden I was able to let go of a whole bunch of things that weren’t duplicates, but duplicated function. It got me away from have I used it in the past year? And do I love it? Those are useful, but the most important question was if I didn’t have it what would I use in its place?
    He also mentioned Mark Bittman‘s article in the New York Times many years ago about a minimalist kitchen still cooks or something like that where the author explained the 30 or so items he felt were needed in a minimalist kitchen. I use that as a springboard to think about what I was keeping. My list is different but it got me thinking about each item in a new way.

    Things we LOVE about moving...!!! well... we get a new/different place to live..!! Packing up - ugh.!! My only thoughts on your move.. You packed up all of those jars and pans, etc to donate... I would have packed up all of your stuff to go to the new house.. and left all the jars, pans etc to USE while your still in that place. Jars can be used as drinking cups. etc. Then when you are ready to skedaddle out.. you pack up all the stuff to donate. Things that hadn't been used in the past, get a little bit of love before they get a new home/owner. Happy moving.!!

      My husband suggested that we buy a bigger house last year, but my reply was that we would just fill it up with more junk. He's got our two-car garage so full of junk that we can't get a car in it. One bedroom is full to the ceiling with more of his junk. Half of his closet is full of stuff that he hasn't used in 30 years. I'm almost 70; I'm looking to make my life easier, not harder.

    Before and even in the first years having children, i was a minimalist and decluttered every few months. That was good caus we moved several times, but when the kids grew up, i got use to hold on to more stuff - but in a well organised way! Constantly they need weird/old stuff for a school project or for a theatre at church. Friends coming over and needed an extra towel, bathing suit (after my son's last birthday a bunch of different body shaped teen boys stayed over night and decided to go swimming but nobody had a swim shorts😁 gladly we have do many in different sizes for our three boys, so that everyone had one. ) My kids are quite grown up now, but still friends, partners... Come over needing a sleeping bag or an extra bike 😂 so I changed my attitude a lot. But as I said, in a well organised way. Everybody in the house knows what we have and were it is. When the kids all move out, i plan to go more minimalistic again😊

    We moved from Ohio to Georgia three or four years ago. It wasn’t easy. My daughter brought me and our dogs down to her sister’s house. Where we were staying. We had bought the land. But we need to put a house on it. That took over a year. We finally went to a hotel for like five months. Until we could move in the house. And we really weren’t supposed to be staying in the house. We pitched a tent next to the house. And we froze the night we stayed in it. We lived in the house with no water and no power for at least a month. Getting someone to hook our power up was ridiculous. A guy came out and left. He said he didn’t have enough line. He just didn’t want to do it. My husband finally talked to a supervisor and explained that someone had been to our house and left. Well, she made sure we had power, during a storm, and some poor guy had to come and hook it up. At least with power we had air and could use the appliances. We lived like pilgrims when we first got in this brand new manufactured home. We had to climb up a step stool to get in our doors. And when we took the dogs out. Someone had to be out there to take them one at a time until the other person could get down the step stool. We have three dogs and neither one of us to handle all three of them together. It was not a fun time. But we had a guy come and build our porches. And then we had actual steps to get out of our house. Then we brought all our stuff from our storage unit over. We had boxes to the ceiling in our living room. We got all of the boxes put away pretty quickly. And now we’ve lived here for three years. And I love it here.

    Decluttering advice - first read/listen "Goodbye Things" by Fumio Sasaki - Then sort so you know what you have, then pull a baseline of what you absolutely physically need, then ask each remaining item "what is the worst that will happen if I don't have this?" and "Is this even worth the time, effort, space?". Immediately get the give-aways out of your home.

    My tip is to declutter things that are sold every day at Walmart or similar for $20 or less. I’m not moving a plastic Halloween door decoration when I can get another one if I want it later. I’d end up paying close to that $20 in fees for the movers or my own time to move it.

    • @neb-03
      @neb-03 11 місяців тому +6

      Fair, but it can also be really wasteful to repurchase that sort of stuff upon every move. I think long term it makes more sense to either buy reusable decorations you'd want to keep around for a long time, or use recyclable decorations that can be reprinted or something.

    • @briannab5296
      @briannab5296 11 місяців тому +2

      @@neb-03 .. I agree with you on this one. $20 here & there & there all adds up quickly, not even counting the time, gas, effort, & frustration at what you want or need being sold out. Add to that inflation, what costs $20 today will cost $35-40 next time you go back to buy it.
