  • Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about racism in the Deep South has been a perennial read in grade school, an Academy Award-winning film, and now a critically-lauded play on Broadway. Tracy Smith talks with the show's star Jeff Daniels and playwright Aaron Sorkin about translating Lee's characters to the stage, and with students who talk about "Mockingbird"'s relevance to today's audience.

Stellar...thank you CBS....great piece. Well done by the producers and actors, and Harper, yes, but can you see the hidden hand of Lin as well? Put Theater in the hands of teens. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a ticket, to see life -changing theater when you can then-afford it....let kids see it for ten dollars. Thrilling to think of it. And how about the kids who were asked the significance.....can they hold a tune, or what? Totally forthcoming and wise in their answers as to the meaning of the background and the play. This is Mockingbird by exponential growth. This was a joy to watch thank you CBS.

Aaron Sorkin did a great job of essentially rewriting the piece to fit modern times. The adults playing the children were wonderful. As for Jeff Daniels, this man should have never been an actor. What is it, like at least 30 years of acting and still, Mr. One Note Performance all the way. Sad.

The adaptation dehumanizes white Southerners and treats the concept of understanding other PoVs as naive and stupid.
