Thank you for your ballet videos. The ballet world is really fascinating. I enjoy the ballet classes and rehearsals than to watch the final product. You are really a beautiful girl and I am happy for you that you are back to professional ballet. Keep on doing videos. They have been very useful to me. Again thanks.
Hi Kathryn!! I have to say I love your channel!! I am not a ballet dancer, but I am a HUGE fan, and I appreciate that I could be able to learn more about this beautiful art!! Thank you!!! Kind regards from Spain XD
THANK you for specifying about sewing ribbons and elastic on the inside! I so dislike this common practice these days, of sewing them outside; to me it looks sloppy, and is just one more item getting in the way of the simple, clean line we aim for. I also really like that you re-use your ribbons. It's an especially useful practice if it's difficult to get the kind of ribbons you like, besides making sense in terms of economics and simply being in a conserving, low-waste mind-set. I prefer the kind of ribbons that it looks like you use, which are shiny on one side, rougher on the other, and very thin material, to have as little bulk from ribbons as possible. I got in the habit of cutting two different lengths, since the inside ribbon has a bit further to go than the outside one, and, like you, I prefer to fold them on the sewn end, so there are three layers where they're being sewn. As soon as I had the ribbons cut (leaving a bit of leeway in length), I'd burn both ends of each one, making the fabric melt very slightly, to keep the ribbons from fraying at the ends. I also liked to get the drawstring or elastic tied where I wanted it, so it wouldn't matter so much if I inadvertently sewed through it. I've also worn primarily Freeds for many years, and they are easier to work with than most others for sewing, shortening shanks (or removing them altogether, for use as flat shoes), getting the little nails out, and so forth. I never thought of or learned about cutting the inside fabric to give a bit more room; that's a great tip, and something doable in Freeds, but much less so, if not impossible, with some other brands, including Capezios, the last time I saw them, since those two layers of fabric are much harder to separate, or sometimes can't be separated, from my experience. Just one of many reasons I never cared for Capezios, along with their greater noisiness, the difficulty in softening them up, the practical impossibility of working with the shanks (shortening, removing, etc.), or getting the nails out if you do manage to do anything with the shanks, and the fact that they just never felt very good. I like using something to harden up the inside just a bit, after getting the shoes broken in just right, to help keep them useable in that shape as long as possible (being in companies where the numbers of shoes provided were fine, but not in the kind of range that NYCB reportedly provides, and later, buying them for myself--also I always preferred somewhat softer shoes to new ones). Jet glue used as you showed is good, but the best stuff I ever had, which I can't find now, was a kind of shellack for metal that the stage workers used in Germany. It was just thick enough to be easily spread where one wanted it in the shoe, and dried completely clear. Here, the best I've been able to find is Zinsser Bull's Eye shellack, or the spray version of it. Better than nothing. Re. the jet glue, once I took someone's advice and put some on the outside of the pointe, rather than just the inside. Bad idea--both toe platforms were totally slippery from it. Re. taping toes, I haven't had to do that for years, thanks to modern science. I used to disapprove of various pads, and would only use a layer or two of paper towel wrapped around my toes, which was fine until something would cause a blister or corn to develop. Finally trying Ouch Pouch Jr.s was a revelation, and made me jealous of dancers growing up with that available, rather than just lamb's wool and foam pads. The Jr.s are not bulky at all, they just protect my skin while letting me 'feel the floor'; it just feels like the bit of paper towel I was used to, but without any of the friction, raw skin, blisters, corns, or bad calluses that would sometimes come with that, or messed up skin, from toes being taped for hours. Even with shoes on for long periods, with time waiting, then up dancing, then waiting some more, before dancing again--even in those situations, my toes and feet generally were fine. I'm now a big fan of those. Anyway, great video, and I love the one on pirouettes, etc., too (can't wait to try the counting backwards trick, and to share it with students).
Your videos are wonderfully organized and filmed and are so easy to understand! You also have tips I've never heard before. So awesome!! Can't wait to continue following your channel for videos to come. :) Going to try your sewing technique on my next pair of shoes!
Your pointe shoe sewing tutorial was really good. Most of the other videos from other channels seem to just talk about how they sew their shoes without actually physically doing it. Everyone does this differently, so it's a nice insight to see the finer details. So Thank you :)
Do you think you could make a video describing your time at SAB and NYCB? Like auditioning, dorms, classes, getting into the company, etc.? It's my dream to go there and the more information I can get on it the better!
got my first pair of pointe shoes this past weekend and I love them! I am so happy that I finally made it on pointe! you are such a big inspiration to me and I love ally our videos! have an amazing day!
This video is the reason i subscribed a while ago:) Just watched it again because i got my first pair of pointe shoes yesterday so excited! Our ballet teacher is teaching us how to sew on our ribbons and elastics tomorrow! Soooo excited. Thanks Kathryn for the video/s :)
You are absolutely stunning! And your videos are so helpful! I'm so glad you are going back to professional dancing, I hope to be a part of NYCB one day 😍😘
this is brilliant, Kathryn... I was a classical ballet student, who had progressed to point shoes... now I am older, but re-training my body for ballet...
My friend's daughter is going to start pointe shoe training very soon. I was trying to help her by finding all of the information that I could. I happened to find your site and I am glad that I did. I will be sending you questions and asking for information so that I can help her. I work at a theatre and we have ballet performances and I am amazed at the talent that some of these young woman display. Thank you for all of your help and please keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you so much! your videos are always so helpful :) you're so beautiful as well. it's so kind of you to do these for young dancers like me. It's obvious that you put a lot of work into these! it's very much appreciated.
Hi Katie! This video was really helpful, because I am going to start sewing my own pointe shoes for the first time! Could you do a video on how to be prepared, what to expect, and how to improve at a summer intensive? :)
could you maybe do a video sometime about easy and quick snacks that are healthy and high in protein? I always have trouble finding time to eat well, especially in the mornings.
Same. If you are a beginner or just started doing intermediate then you have a blue leotard. But if you are going on pointe or on pointe then you get a black leo.
I'm not in pointe shoes (I'm a late beginner, I'm older than you!) but I loved your leotards. I actually just bought a couple of Eleve ones and I wanted to see some real life examples. There are hardly any videos featuring them, so thank you for sharing yours!
My pointe shoes are way too small right now so I am finally getting a new pair. I had European balance and it was nice, but I might try some new ones. Thanks for these tips! I love your channel.
I just wanted to say thank you because I just started pointe and getting it all read was very confusing. But this video made it much more simple and less stressful, and you gave me inspiration to start my own channel, so I did!! I mad it for my journey in dance! Super excited to perform on pointe!!💙💙💙💙
Hey I was just wondering if u could do a video on wat u wear for bras under ur leos thanks all your videos help even things I would have never thought of
your videos are really helpful because I'm starting pointe in like a week or two and I'm looking on websites for strengthening exercises watching a few of your videos and some of live on pointe anyway so far I'm finding everything really helpful so thank! xx
The split Sole is easily to point while the full sole is for ballerina who are like upper grades and much more better in pointing and stuff. The split sole is mostly wore in like Chinese dance, mordern dance and sometimes gymnastics, full sole is mostly for ballet and those who are still using flats for ballet. I'm one lol. I learn ballet since I was 4. I've been in ballet for 7 years ardy so I Probaly knew everything :) haha hope it helps!
+Zephie lovet actually, it completely depends on your dance school. Some schools let students choose what they wear, whereas my school has you wear full sole until you get to Intermediate Foundation - Intermediate (basically Grade 6 - Grade 7 but with pointe shoes). Split sole shoes make your feet look much more enhanced, and show off your arches more. Full sole shoes restrict your arch a bit, and don't make your feet look as pretty/nice. I started dance when I was two, and now I'm twelve so I've been doing it for ten years and I know my stuff :) hope this helps!
straight to the pointe Thank you. Teacher said full soled but I don't think she really cares too much. Although I got full soles for class and half soles for shows. Thank you so much
If you are a beginner you should be using full sole leather shoes. It has more resistance and will strengthen your foot more unlike a split sole canvas or leather shoe. Its absolutely untrue that full soles are for upper grades.
I'm gonna let you know that they are torture for the first 3-6 months! You might not feel it right away but after they are really fun when you can do stuff!
That's so exciting! Just letting you know some of these things are for students/dancers who had a little more experience on pointe, how you sew, break in etc won't be exactly the same; you should ask your teachers before trying anything your not sure of :) have fun!
Hey Kathryn! Your eleves are gorgeous! Next year will be my first year as a trainee, and I am shooting to get a job in the next two years. I was hoping you could mention in a video a little advice on company auditions. I am not sure if I should set up appointments to take class with the company or just do the cattle call auditions. I am petrified, and would really love your advice on what to expect.
I will definitely do a video on that. I would look into both- some companies don't do cattle call auditions at all. So you will have to call them. GOOD LUCK!
I'm a late starter age 16 :3 and I'm starting pointe at my first summer intensive. Thank you for your wonderful advice and tips that helped get me where I want to be ^^
Love this video! Interesting tip about when your feet swell... I will definitely put that to use next nutcracker season! Also I have the same Nadine eleve as you with half sleeves and mesh, but mine is light pink! It's one of my favorites.
I absolutely love the Amber leotard from Eleve. I have adopted it as my church uniform paring it with a skirt of the same color. How do you like it? I only live 60 miles from the store in Kansas City Missouri. I love your videos and would love to learn ballet.
I love this! I have a question that is probably a rookie type of question, but what's the point of tearing out the shank like you did at the end? Is it just for more flexibility, or is there another reason?
Rachel Nyenhuis I realize this comment is very old but it was a very sloppy way of 3/4 shanking your shoes which is when you cut the about a quarter of the way down the shank to make your arch look better. There might be more reasons I've never done it before (I would be WAY over the box if I did) hope that helped even though your comment is a few years old
I am sorry if anyone already asked, but, what king of glue do you use? That kind of procedure it's totally new to me! I am very glad to have this information! Thanks Kathryn! You're the best anyway :)
Kathryn Morgan I have just gotten my next pair of Russians today. And there is already a stain. I swear I didn't do anything wrong to them. But anyways, I have tried everything!!! What am I supposed to do?! As I have just gotten then I cannot afford to return them or take them to a professional. Any tips??
Hey Kathryn! I had sub'd and these are my fav types of videos! I've been dancing for about 10 years and I teach as well. I am 23 with a 1 year old and still attend two ballet classes a week :) you do a very similar pointe shoe breaking in as me!
Please do a video on how to rosin your pointe shoes I have new pointe shoes I kept slipping so I got rosin for dancers and it is by bunheads! Thank you!
The trick for even jet glue was really helpful! I don’t have my pointe shoes yet but might get them this year and I was trying to think of how to avoid buying a whole bunch of pairs (your first year on pointe is a half hour a week for me) and I was hesitant to think of jet glue because I imagined it drying like hot glue and I was afraid I’d make it bumpy. But now I’m less nervous About the cost of pointe shoes bc I can make them last longer!
Hi! Could you do a 'ballet throughout the years' video? Talking about how/where/why you started, old pictures and videos of your dancing as you grow up? Would love to see your progression! xx
can you do a video on tips of darning and the benefits and if i or anyone should do it thx :) At my school we tend to bring up the way you dance sometimes because we all love you so yea
Hi Katie, I have a question about feet exercizes and what's appropriate and helpful vs potentially harmful. The teacher gave the exercize you do at 34:20 circa BUT MODIFIED like this: flat shoes, one foot stays over the toes (basically the bended toes support the entire body weight) while the other foot is up in the releve', without the movement; the point was to stay in this position for as long as you could. Hope you understand what I mean! The pain was excruciating after 10 seconds so my DD (intermediate student) went off that position and the teacher reacted badly. Can you please share your thoughts? Thank you.
Hi Kathryn, Really informative video. Will try your sewing tips. Also like your sugggestions of gluing the shoes to make them last longer. Can you let me know what kind of glue it is? Thanks again… Ellen
Will you pls make a short video to show how to properly sew the inside of sides and the back of the pointe shoes to make it snug fit perfectly without any bagging issue?! Thank you :)
I want to try freed pointe shoes so badly. Can You help me about the box? If wear a XXXX grishko or XXX bloch box do you have any idea of which freed box should I wear? And let me tell you taht I love your videos, your so amazing explaining your tips.
Love your style, I´m a begginer from Argentina, I don´t pretend to be a profesional but anyway I feel true passion for ballet. Your exercise video is fantastic. Could you talk about your stage experience, how you manage it, how you create the characters you get, etc.. Sorry for my english.
Kathryn Morgan Do you have a link to where you bought the light pink sweetheart neckline leotard?I really want one of these for my ballet audition. Thanks and great video!
Hi Katie! I have loved your videos so far. They have been incredibly helpful! I have a question regarding shaving down the outsole of your shoes. Do you find that it changes the integrity/strength of your shoe in the demi-pointe area? I love the idea of having less wobble, but I also find that I need my shoes to be harder in that area. Any thoughts would be appreciated :)
Thank you! I find it only makes it a tiny bit lighter. Not that big of a difference. I need a hard shoe as well and I really haven't had any issues. :)
I'm semi-new to pointe (this is my 3rd year on pointe) i'm not very old still a student but i would really like to get stronger on pointe regarding turns and such any tips or tricks?? you are absolutely amazing and i love watching your videos ;)
Sierra Ashton Thank you! If you haven't yet seen my feet and pointe work strengthening video, I will link it here. I will do a video on pointe work and turns though! xo Feet & Pointe Work Strengthening Workout
Hiya, this video has been very helpful. I've been on pointe's for two years now but I've never heard of glueing the inside of the shoe. What does it do??? Thank you xxxxx
Thanks, Kathryn ... I am a 64 years old lady beginning on pointe shoes. I found your video very helpful.
WOW that is VERRY impressive
That is sooo wonderful!!!!
Maria Cecilia GOOD JOB!
Maria Cecilia love ur post! im almost 35 (this June ! ) and just decided to start Adult ballet for beginners ♡♡♡

Somw great tips! I never knew about stitching like that and the glue, brilliant
Thank you!
I wish I was allowed to wear colored Leos!
Word!
Yea we have to wear blue but before we had to wear purple leos if I could choose I would pick green
We have coloured Leo's for different grades. Currently (grade 6-8 I think) im in a deep red one
In my ballet you can basically wear Amy color leotard you want. I like black.

Hey I was just wondering if u could do a video on wat u wear for bras under ur leos thanks all your videos help even things I would have never thought of
Ryleigh Bienemann most ballet dancers don't wear a bra
Well then don't you sag and jiggle all over
Thank you so much for making this video. It was extremely helpful for first time pointe girls.
PLEASE DO A POINTE TIPS FOR BEGINERS!!!!!
your videos are really helpful because I'm starting pointe in like a week or two and I'm looking on websites for strengthening exercises watching a few of your videos and some of live on pointe anyway so far I'm finding everything really helpful so thank! xx
Thank you Kathryn I just got my first pair of pointe shoes today!!
Yay! Congrats!
Ohhh I really love the Laico with sleeves
For a video suggestion why not talk about the difference between split sole and full soled flat shoes? That's some information I'd like to know
The split Sole is easily to point while the full sole is for ballerina who are like upper grades and much more better in pointing and stuff. The split sole is mostly wore in like Chinese dance, mordern dance and sometimes gymnastics, full sole is mostly for ballet and those who are still using flats for ballet.

Wow, very nice. Will share on the "Ballet Every Day" community on G+ this week.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
Getting my first pair of pointe shoes on the 20th!!
Madi Butler CONGRATS!!🍾🎉🎈 Good luck and have fun! You will love it!
thank you so much, I just started pointe and am very excited, this video definitely helped
Great video as always! Can't wait for some new ballet exercises videos! :)
Loved this video! Keep going and all the best for you!
I love this video, so helpful! (your eyebrows are fantastic, by the way)
Thanks for this video! It's very helpful, because I'm getting my first pair of Pointe shoes soon, I'm so excited! Thank you again! x :)

Hi i love your video, your pointe shoes are really pretty i use gaynor minden because it works really good
Me coming 6 years in the future: 0:45 you were not kidding
I absolutely love the Amber leotard from Eleve. I have adopted it as my church uniform paring it with a skirt of the same color. How do you like it? I only live 60 miles from the store in Kansas City Missouri. I love your videos and would love to learn ballet.
Nice Video! Could you please do a video on how to get in pointe shoes fast? Thanks!
I discovered your videos today, Katie, and want to thank you for them. You are awesome!!!
Cheers and happy dancing! (-:
Your so pretty and you inspire me so much👍 can you make a video talking about where you get all you ballet stuff from? Thank you so much😀😀😀
great tips and tricks! Thank you
I am going on pointe shoes in 3 months and I am so exited I can't wait
hey, thanks for the nice video. I wish you luck for your future!
Do you have any tricks on using fabric drawstrings??:) TANKS!!

Very helpful! Thank you!

Pérola Benitez I use Jet Glue. I have linked where you can purchase it on amazon below the video. It really works wonders!
Kathryn, any tips for cleaning up satin and inside of pointe shoes??
This is so helpful thank you!
Could you do a video on dance as a professional career and what dance schools would look for in a dancer please x
Molly Adamson Yes! I will!
Kathryn Morgan I have just gotten my next pair of Russians today. And there is already a stain. I swear I didn't do anything wrong to them. But anyways, I have tried everything!!! What am I supposed to do?! As I have just gotten then I cannot afford to return them or take them to a professional. Any tips??
Thank you so much!!!
My point shoes are now perfect💕
I just got the okay from my teacher to go on pointe I'm so happy thank you for this video it really helped a lot xoxo
Definetly going to follow this when I buy my 2nd pair of pointe shoes cause I may have forgotten how to prepare them haha :)
+Hellacrazzzy18125 Same I've been sewing my pointe shoes for years and never thought of this! And congrats on your second pair!!!
I’m getting my shoes tomorrow!
Thank you!
You can put rosin on the bod and inside heel
MakeupByMonkey18 I will do that! There are some tricks. :)
Evyn DeLong And yes you are right. :)
Can you do a video on the pointe shoes you have used and how you like them?
The trick for even jet glue was really helpful! I don’t have my pointe shoes yet but might get them this year and I was trying to think of how to avoid buying a whole bunch of pairs (your first year on pointe is a half hour a week for me) and I was hesitant to think of jet glue because I imagined it drying like hot glue and I was afraid I’d make it bumpy. But now I’m less nervous About the cost of pointe shoes bc I can make them last longer!
I love this video so much
Hi! Could you do a 'ballet throughout the years' video? Talking about how/where/why you started, old pictures and videos of your dancing as you grow up? Would love to see your progression! xx
Brilliant idea! Thank you!
And I'm getting my pointe shoes later today.... So this has helped ALOT!
These videos are amazing!thankyou they've helped so much!!! J x
can you do a video on tips of darning and the benefits and if i or anyone should do it
thx :)
At my school we tend to bring up the way you dance sometimes because we all love you so yea
SophZoe10 Thank you! I would do a video on darning, but I have never actually done it before! So I wouldn't be the person to ask. But thank you!
Love your channel 💕 you should make a video about what leotards you own 👏
When I watch your videos I feel like your missing something "ohhhh yahhhhh you don't use your hands when you talk"😂😂😂
I just got my pointe shoes on Monday😱 so excited even though it hurts a bit🙈😉
I really like the video! What is the glue for though?
The glue makes your shoes hard again when they get soft. So you can get a few more wears out of them!
Thank you.
I'm going on pointe! I just turned 12 and basically my studio, you have to be 12! So exited
PKM Beauty101 Yay! That's fantastic! xoxo
I had to wait till others in my class were old enough, so I only just started at age 14 I cri
Hi Kathryn, Really informative video. Will try your sewing tips. Also like your sugggestions of gluing the shoes to make them last longer. Can you let me know what kind of glue it is? Thanks again… Ellen
Yes! It is called Jet Glue. Another good brand is called Hot Stuff. You can buy both online. Try Discount Dance. :)
Many thanks. Great tip!
Will you pls make a short video to show how to properly sew the inside of sides and the back of the pointe shoes to make it snug fit perfectly without any bagging issue?! Thank you :)
I am going to start ballet soon and I've never done it befor so if you have any tips and tricks I would love them
I want to try freed pointe shoes so badly.
Thank you! And yes I will!
I found a video of you when you were still with nyc ballet! It was for sleeping beauty!
You make it look so easy. I'm staring at my gaynor mindens and am dreading sewing them. They need to come with thimbles haha
I will do a video on pointe work and turns though! xo

I'm sure this has been requested, but will you do a stretching/strengthening video for extensions/penches, etc?
Great idea! I have not! I will write it down! :)

This was very helpful because it had all in one
Hiya, this video has been very helpful. I've been on pointe's for two years now but I've never heard of glueing the inside of the shoe. What does it do???
Thank you xxxxx
