Victoria deserves a real spot on your list…not just an honorable mention.👑

One of my first memories of Masterpiece was War and Peace with Anthony Hopkins. Great!

Thank you for the list. I am glad to say that I have seen most, if not all of these shows. I agree with Jeeves and Wooster being number one. It's just such a quintessential Masterpiece Theater show ful of genius good acting and great writing.

@@jazzyup4305 I love Poldark, the novels and the 1975 series. The more recent version is not as raw nor does it emphasize the economic, class conflict, and politics that the novels and the original series brought out. And the casting was much better in 1975. Robin Ellis looks and acts like Ross Poldark as described in the novels. Aidan Turner does not. He's too short and dark for Poldark as well as lacking Ross' impetuosity. Angarad Rees had more of the spit-fire spiritedness of Demelza while Jill Townsend looks more like Elizabeth with her platinum blonde hair and carries off Elizabeth's fearfulness better than does Heida Reed. The only improvement in casting is Ruby Bentall as Verity. The pacing is entirely too fast in the more recent version, but most all films and TV shows move too quickly in recent years so that there is little buildup in tension or character development. Winston Graham at the time complained about the story moving too quickly in the 1975 series. He would have been even more upset with the recent version.

Sir, What is the name of the movie where the man pretends he has drown to be with his mistress? Wife finds out later that he is alive. Later the table turns when his mistress and baby drown. They are buried in the same coffin.

Great Series. And Diana Rigg was really good (and Lovely) in Bleak House. Best Wishes to everyone. Sincerely, Tom

Really like your countdown. Wish you'd had time to mention Masterpiece's Pride and Prejudice with Fay Weldon's super scriptwriting (1982). The one you showed was 1995, made long after Colin Firth impressed us in Priestley's Lost Empires. Cheers.

If Matthew, (Dan Stevens), hadn’t left after three seasons, Downton Abbey would be #1.

From what I understand a lot of the PBS stations were “Educational” stations. Since they couldn’t just show TV shows for entertainment, they decided to have a host at the beginning of the shows explaining (educating) what the show was about.

There's one I remember, that I can't seem to find anywhere on UA-cam.. It was a PBS show called Nanny. Not Nanny, starring Fran Drescher, which is what I get every time I type in Nanny on UA-cam.. I mean the British show about a Nanny who went around most of the time pushing a pram. I remember that I loved this show.

Pride And Prejudice, Downton Abbey, and Poldark are my favs. Have not seen Upstairs Downstairs in its entirety. Can't wait!
British mysteries' lead characters are mostly boring as hell. But British Dramas (Romantic or not) are the best.

Just about every single one of these was about what I would have rated, but two - Downton might easily have been replaced by the original All Creatures Great And Small, and I personally prefer the Miss Marple series staring Joan Hickson, in opposition to Agatha Christie's Marple, both reasonings on purely personal grounds. However, I intend to watch just about all of these, because great minds generally think alike

    • @LNER4771

The original All Creatures Great and Small was excellent, but it did not originally air on Masterpiece. It was picked up for syndicated showing on various PBS stations and the A&E Network.

There were well over one hundred dramas that appeared on Masterpiece. Just because they're not on this list neither adds nor detracts to their quality.

You missed all the great novels adapted for the BBC--Tom Brown's School Days, Cousin Bette, The Golden Bowl--I love Morse, Poirot, Tennison and Holmes, but I learned about literature through all the great novels

I'Claudius is chock full of laughs the whole way through and it's place at #8 on the list makes me want to cry. I love J&W but I'd put them #2 behind I'Claudius. It's simply amazing. Also sad that Private Shulz isn't on the list. I'd certainly put it in over Poirot or Inspector Morse. FWIW: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_Schulz

I, Claudius should be at the top or number 2 behind Elizabeth R. I would not have Jeeves and Wooster on the list at all.
