The winter 1941/1942 was one of the coldest in the 20th century. Germany saw temperatures of more than -30°C, even the Rhine river was frozen. In Eastern Europe, temperatures of more than -40° were noted.
The average temperature in January (Riga) is -8 °. That cold must have been from something else ..
