    Digital will never be film as the way they make pictures is different. Film has highlight roll off while digital has highlight blow out. Film has layers with primary colors and can detect finer color differences. Digital has a color filter array where every pixel has a single color and interpolation algorithms are used to calculate colors. In certain circumstances they can produce similar results while in others there will be obvious differences.

    I do love finding an undeveloped roll in the fridge and seeing those moments again 8 months later, whether the photos are good or bad. I have found slowing down with manual lenses on digital has been a nice change though, even if it isn't the same film shooting process all the way through. I've been wanting to give Dehancer a try but seems a little pricey for what it is.

      I think manual focus lenses definitely lend a nostalgic take on digital, I shoot this way a lot as well. I like your take on keeping the film for a while before developing, good idea. It is pretty pricey but I think for some it would be worth it. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to watch the video and comment 🤙🏼

    When consumer digital DSLR cameras were introduced, I also had a Canon Elan II. Would shoot film and digital, and have wet chemistry (chromogenic) prints made for each. The limitations of the c-prints made the results more similar than not. Digital prints looked a little more contrasty and film did a better job with shadow and highlight detail.
    Must say - your edits are great. You may think the differences are obvious, but, that is probably because you spent the time to work on them. I couldn't determine which was which and be 100% sure.

    Ive been so tempted to get a film camera but after looking into the cost of ownership developing and scanning I feel like I could just get a Leica Q2 and be spending less in the long run but still getting a cool second camera. I will admit my mirrorless setup is boring despite being super expensive.

    When you're specifically looking to find the differences it's definitely very obvious I got them all right. There is something to be said about how similar the results can get - Also sometimes I don't want to go on my computer and do a bunch of editing to get them to a place I want and that's where I find film really shines. Yeah you're editing it still but it requires way less work to get it to a good spot that I like.

      I completely agree, it is a lot of work to make it look that. You can just get the film stock ya want and go for it! I am unbiased, love both and think they have their places in my work flow. I bring my film camera when I don't want photography to get in my way, if that makes sense. Thanks so much for watching the video, your perspective and for taking the time to comment. Cheers

    Great video. I am from the film era , shot digital the last 23 years , before dragging out my old film gear. Yes , film is expensive, but I know how to develop and scan my B&W film. I also , had to learn how to develop color film, which was a lot easier than B&W. That dramatly lowered the over all cost of shooting film. Now I shoot film mostly, and digital as a backup, if I can't return to a important subject, which is rare . Reason, it slows you done . From the film days, "get it right in the camera" will save money down the line. KB

    • @hunterhart1
      @hunterhart1  10 місяців тому +1

      I can't tell much of a difference either honestly. That is kind of the whole point of the video, why has film become so popular and expensive if you can't tell the difference? Is it just cool to say "I shoot film" or is there a reason it is sought after? I have clients that want film photographs from me just because it is hip but tbh they would never know the difference. People aren't printing anything anymore and I think that is where the difference really lies. Thanks for watching

      @@hunterhart1 Not sure if there is a reason sought after... 🤷‍♂️ Funny enough, film is so expensive and yet social media is full of film photos which I find totally boring and which seem to have no other merit than being shot on film (as if using film alone would make a great photo).

    I was a medium format film wedding photographer for a few years. I've also owned one sort of digital camera or another for a few decades. And as much as I truly love my digital cameras ... well, I must say that the image quality from film is SO far superior on a grand scale, especially when you expose your negatives precisely, when you use a low ISO film, and when you use a full quality professional lab for your final results. The only problems ... ? The cost of film and developing, and the inability to enhance with Photoshop when necessary if you have no way of scanning your negatives. But from what I understand ... the newish 50+ MP digital cameras, especially those from Fuji, surely give film a run for the money.
    The only limiting factor with film is the photographic paper on which it is printed, which doesn't offer a wide dynamic range when needed. Your scenes need to be quite well lit in every section of your photo if you hope to see good detail, such as inside a large dance hall. Adding additional portable lights here and there inside the room, equipped with a slave, can be useful. Those were actually the good old days. It was much more work, but I enjoyed it more. But yeah, I also love digital -

    When I first started in photography I had to wait a week to a fortnight before my film was returned, then the 24 hour labs started, then it was a huge revelation when you could drop off a film at a lab, have lunch and about an hour later pick up your prints. I went fully digital, my first digital proper was a 6 mp Canon, and regularly find 10 to 12 MP is fine for what I want, a Fujifilm real 3D is with me at all times, 10 MP stereo with a conventional JPG.
    I have recently returned to 120 film, 5x9cm bellows with only 8 shots per film, but find slowing down and thinking about the shot is fun. On order is a Zorki 1 camera and I’m sure it will be just as enjoyable. Brought up with film I guess never leaves you.
