P0118 TOYOTA Description
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is used to detect the engine coolant temperature. The sensor modifies a voltage signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM). The modified signal returns to the ECM as the engine coolant temperature input. The sensor uses a thermistor which is sensitive to the change in temperature. The electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases as temperature increases.

Great tutoring video. Could you tell how much of coolant will spill out of the thermostat sensor housing if I will do replacement without the draining coolant.
I am planning big job on Corolla 2009: replace water pump and serpentine belt, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses, engine coolant pipe connector and after watching your video - coolant temperature sensor.
My time is not allowing me to do everything in one day. I would like to replace coolant temperature sensor first and do all the rest next day. Is it okey after sensor replacement to drive a car 200 meters to my parking place without adding the coolant, and next day drain all coolant and do the rest of the job.
I will appreciate your advice.
If you drain nothing, you will lose likely at least one-third of your coolant in a big mess over the engine and accessories like the alternator. This can cause problems. Anyway, I wish you every success in what you are going to do with your Corolla
@@YiannisPagonis Thank you for the advice. I thought it might drain not too much from the sensor hole, because its location on the top of the engine. But if it comes so much, I will not let the coolant ruin my alternator or other parts.
In this case, I will have to drain all coolant and finish all my project in one day.
@@stanislav9608 In the end what did you do my friend?
Yannis, do you know the location of engine block coolant drain bolt on Corolla 2009, 10th generation. I never drained from engine block, but this time I want to drain as much as possible.
I have no idea how much I can get coolant from the engine block. Have you ever tried it.

Thank you so much for this my friend! Watched your vids and it helped me alot.
The way you drain the coolant, is this also the same with coolant flushing?
Yes, from the lower radiator drain cock plug (remove it completely out)
Thank you for the great video. Does anyone know what the white plug with the red wire is?
Como siempre muy explicado , gracias amigo griego. Desde Montevideo. 👍
Muchas gracias mi querido amigo de Montevideo. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
8:23 if the sensor looks that corroded, I can almost guarantee you the coolant and radiator cap were eaten alive because the coolant wasn't changed often enough.
Great and helpful vid though! You definitely know your stuff with all your disclaimers about keeping things clean, and watching for spills/heat.
Coolant ensures that your engine temperature remains stable to perform well in all climates. An added bonus of engine coolant is that it also prevents rust and the corrosion of metals (that are not iron or steel), in the radiator, engine and heater.
How long does a coolant last in a car?
Manufacturers suggest replacing the coolant periodically. It is recommended you change coolant after the first 210,000 km (140,000 miles) or 120 months, then every 30,000 km (20,000 miles) or 24 months.
What happens if you never change coolant?
The coolant can become more acidic over time and lose its rust-inhibiting properties, causing corrosion. Corrosion can damage the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap, hoses and other parts of the cooling system, as well as to the vehicle heater system. And that can cause a car engine to overheat.
Which color coolant is best?
Green coolant is the conventional coolant (Ethylene Glycol base) and is the most popularly used coolant. Red coolant typically has a base of Organic Acid Technology which is designed to be more suitable for aluminium radiators.
On my 1.8 the fans keep running all the time..
I know that supposed to run when ac is on.. but they are constantly on.. stop for 5sec.. then back on!!
Already checked relays.. they are fine!!
Could this be the problem?
Other common reasons for the problem (exept relays) include a faulty chip in the electronic control unit (ECU) and a failing coolant temperature sensor.
@@YiannisPagonis thank you.. I'll have to check those out next..
@@gennaro4941 Yes, your next step to check is the engine coolant temperature sensor

good videos friend. One question at minute 8:04, what is the sensor on the right that only has the positive cable connected?
Hello, did you ever find out what the sensor with one wire was?
Hello friend, I put the original PCV and nothing changed. The strange thing is that the IAC and TPS were tested with a multimeter and the test went well, cleaning was done without being able to remove the IAC or the body that covers the valve (they are special screwdrivers it seems), but as I told you, it underwent special liquids for cleaning the IAC, a little black dirt came out of the IAC and TPS I don't suspect. For example, if I turn on air, I notice how the IAC corrects the ratenti (I remind you that it is at about 2000 rpm's and I can't lower it), if I turn on lights, beacons, etc. change corrects it at idle, if I accelerate I see it becomes even, both to raise or lower the rpm's, which tells me that TPS is fine. In other words, it confirms the tests that were done with a multimeter. Please enter your channel to see the topic of the temperature sensor. I ask you, does this car have a sensor to measure the coolant temperature that goes to the ECU and another sensor to turn on the fan? Because now I am going to try the temperature sensor issue and I don't know if it is one for all or two, because the fan turns on well and at temperature.
Can this cause my car to over heat
Can coolant temp sensor cause overheating?
YESSSSSSSS. If the coolant temperature sensor malfunctions, it could cause your car engine to get overheated. While sometimes a faulty sensor sends a permanent cold signal to the engine, it can also send a permanent hot signal.
Hello, thanks for your video, I ask you, if this sensor does not work well, can it affect the engine idle?
Can an Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor affect idle?
A faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor that always reads cold may cause the fuel control system to run rich, pollute and waste fuel. An Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor that always reads hot may cause cold driveability problems such as stalling, hesitation and rough idle.
@@YiannisPagonis Thank you for responding, the scanner doesn't give me anything, I'm looking for my idling problem and pendulum oscillations of the rpm, as I mentioned in another video, now that I saw your video it shows me the dua, mine is 14 years old and I think it was never reviewed . Can I unplug the sensor connector and try?
@@enriqueatala2567 Then what you can do is measure the resistance of the sensor with a multimeter. Remove the sensor from the engine and immerse the tip of the sensor in hot water. Using an multimeter, measure the resistance between the 2 terminals. Standard Resistance:
20 °C (68 °F) 2.32 to 2.59 kΩ
80 °C (176 °F) 0.310 to 0.326 kΩ
NOTICE:
When checking the engine coolant temperature sensor in the water, keep the terminals dry. After the check, wipe the sensor dry.
If the resistance is not as specified, replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.
@@YiannisPagonis Hello, I'm looking in my 2008 Corolla with 1ZZ-FE 1.8 L engine and I had a hard time finding the coolant temperature sensor, I'm not sure I found it, but since it's very cumbersome to remove, I thought it's also possible to measure from the outside If the problem is not the sensor but the Trip Computer, the engine test light never comes on. I have a precision lectricity tester, I can take resistors of approximate values and file them until they measure those values that you. He sent me and see if my problem of idling and rpm's that go up and down, is because of this sensor. I'll tell you that I already ordered the Torx TS25 tool but it still hasn't arrived. I clarify that I bother him because I live in a rural area and I cannot take him to an official Toyota dealer, since in the 14 years he has been on the street he has only been to that maintenance service. Of course, when it occurred to me because of my knowledge in electricity and electronics, I thought of telling you about that other method of measurement, such as filing the resistances to achieve a more approximate impedance. greetings mr.

Yes, it is very possible that the temperature sensor was broken, or a wire was disconnected during the previous repair, or it is possible that the temperature sensor is just plain defective.

Καλησπέρα, έχω ένα πρόβλημα με συνεχές υψηλό ρελαντί (Opel Kadett 1.4i του 1991), σε έλεγχο της φίσας του αισθητήρα θερμοκρασίας ψυκτικού υγρού, όταν βραχυκυκλώνώ τις επαφές, αντί για 180 oC δείχνει 0 οC, που μπορεί να οφείλετε αυτό το μπέρδεμα;
Καλησπέρα φίλε μου. Οι υψηλές στροφές στο ρελαντί μέχρι που μπορεί να φτάσουν;
ua-cam.com/video/SGz44I90XcE/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/vhputa79rLQ/v-deo.html
Can you please guide what is the use of cleaning it
The reason is to keep it clean and in good condition because if the coolant temperature sensor goes bad it can send a false signal to the computer and throw off the fuel and timing calculations. It is not uncommon for the coolant temperature sensor to fail and send a permanently cold signal to the computer. ... This will reduce fuel economy, and may hinder engine performance.
Thanks a lot
You are welcome my friend ❤❤❤❤❤

What is the coolant temperature sensor 🙁🙁🙁
Coolant temperature sensors are used by the fuel management system to detect the engine's operating temperature. Depending on the sensor information, the control unit adapts the injection time and firing angle to the operating conditions. The sensor is a temperature sensor with a negative temperature coefficient.
