I've been living in an old (1987) RV that I paid cash for, for the last 8+ years now and I LOVE it. One of the best decisions I've ever made was to give up all the unnecessary "stuff" that I THOUGHT I needed to be happy, just like most other people. Extremely liberating, less stress, less headache, more money and more freedom!
Are you thrice divorced? Seriously...rock on..that is cool!
In Arizona most of the parks that are worth living in are 55+ communities. Funny how the ones established get a cheap cost of living and the ones starting out have to pay 6% interest while inflation is sky high and rents are 50% income.
I know a single mother living in a 2 bedroom apartment, makes $3000 a month and pays $1700 in rent.
...kids?
@@euphrates74 , I do not have kids, but I have met a lot of people who DO have kids and have made similar transitions. People think that, because they have kids, they are obligated to stay on the hamster wheel. If you're willing to think outside the box and make some sacrifices to living standards, it can definitely be done. It is definitely EASIER though, without kids, less complicated. It can still be done though, with kids involved.
@@JustinCase780 , I am divorced, yes, as well as a couple failed engagements lol. Real freedom would be the silver-lining there, I suppose.
Sounds like "van life" may not be as glamorous as it's cracked up to be on UA-cam.
Van life sounds awful with kids
Not with kids.
It never is lol but you know how this world is. If you can make jumping off a cliff fun then there will always be another person that wants to experience the “fun”
Houses aren't even affordable right now so yeah people are kind of forced into it rather than it being fun.
It's a blast if you're single or even married, but without kids. I've been an RVer for a long time now and I love the freedom that comes with it. I do know people who do it with kids as well and seem to be pretty happy, but you have to be willing to make some sacrifices and cut-backs to your standard of living, for sure. Most of the people who do it, with kids, seem to be snowbird types that go wherever the weather is decent. That way, they can get the kids outside doing things and not have to be cooped up inside with them all day. Personally, if I had kids, I would have probably invested in a chunk of cheap, raw land somewhere, built a modest cabin and did the homesteading thing, ultimately with gardens, chickens, goats, that sort of thing. There are all kinds of ways to minimize and escape the hamster wheel, with kids, and still make it fun and rewarding for everyone. There would likely be an "adjustment period" involved, but living separate from the cookie-cutter mold that most people live can be a great escape for a lot of people. It's probably not for everyone though, some people are probably more comfortable in the cozy confines (and restrictions) of the system, which isn't a bad thing either, if that's what they want.
Love how Dave always directs the conversation to gaining back your peace of mind
Peace of mind is for losers live under a bridge, no mortgage, do meth, no sleep so you can work two full time jobs, kill animals or eat road kill, get ahead on debt
My husband, our three boys, and myself are living in a camper. We sold our house in 2021 for $410,000 and after paying off our mortgage and fees we had $290,000 in our pocket. We then bought 60 acres with cash and had a pole barn built with cash. My husband and I are now turning it into a barndominium. Yes, we could of bought a smaller piece of property with an already established house on it. But, when it's over said and done, we'll have a home that we are proud of, that's paid for, and a big piece of property that will be my children's one day. It's well worth the aggravation of living in a camper right now because we know what's ahead of us. A life free of debt. God is good!!!
Must be far from a city
@@Dan16673 Yep, just the way we wanted it.
What state? 60 acres for under 500k is amazing
The fact that you have a plan that's already materializing and know what you want is admirable. Congratulations
What’s a pole barn? And good for you for making good financial decisions!
My wife and I are living in a camper right now while we are building. It’s not bad at all if you have the right mindset. And you can save a bunch of money if you do it right
My wife wanted to do this when we moved in the middle of winter and it didn't go well. She wants to sell and try it again but keep it in a barn while we build but I don't know that it will turn out any better than the last time we tried.
Right
17k from the home sale. That's what was worth taking your kids and putting them in a camper with 2 dogs. Wow.

Right?! Are they going to sell their next house when they get 20k in equity?
@@shanep2760 I think they might try to retire lol

Yeah, I like her energy, but she is pretty poor at the job. My opinion.
@@DoctorSmartyPants She’s not very bright.
Racist mad she’s on the show move along you weirdo she’s very qualified to do so
15 year fixed at 5.375 means the family needs to make $135,000 just to afford a $300,000 house....only 20% of all households make that and most of those are above the age of 45.
This advice is not helpful to the vast majority
Are you factoring in the down payment? Sounds like you’re not. What you can afford depends on what you take home and how much you put down.
Yes I factored down payment in the calculations.
Also 5.375 is pretty much the BEST rate at the moment and if you don't have a perfect credit score GOOD LUCK.
If I put a down payment of $200,000 on a $300,000 then the mortgage is actually pretty easy. 🤷♂️ We’ve been saving up!
$17k to sell your home to live in a camper.
Dave's reaction at 1:18 left me laughing out of my chair.
Profoundly stupid decision
I'm guessing they used some of their equity to buy their truck and 5th wheel.
@@jeffersonia “let’s sell our house so we can buy a nice truck” is peak Dave Ramsey customer logic, you’re probably right
Really dumb. Sold the house for a nominal profit and now can’t get into a comparable house. My dad would call that spinning your wheels.
‘Big chunk of money’ she says
20% down, no more than 25% of take home pay, and 15 year mortgage is not realistic for 90%+ of families. Especially in this market, you're looking at a cardboard box when you look at the size of the mortgage payment on a 15 year.
Exactly
As usual, Dave did not ask the right questions! Are they stationary? What is their lot rent? I’ll bet it’s a ton cheaper than renting a house. Plus, it’s a 40 foot fifth wheel. That is huge for four people. There are people with 3-5 kids living in much smaller campers. Suck it up for another two years and then rent or buy. You can have a pile of money saved by then and have a decent amount for a down payment. She said they sold their house to make a big profit because of the market. I’m thinking $100,000. Then she says $17,000. What?!? She got herself in this situation for a paltry sum. Why? And the woman tells her she has to get a 15 year mortgage when they’re only making $90K! In what world? So frustrating.
I agree.
We actually have a 43' motorhome(NOT 5th wheel because the moho was cheaper & we could buy with cash), 4 kids, plus pets.
We are fine.
However we do not spend much time indoors, my kids love their outdoor life!!
We pay $1100/mo in LosAngeles.
We love our life!!
I think it was shortsighted to sell the house. They’ve probably never looked an amortization schedule. With current interest rates, they’re going to lose so bad when they buy the next house.
Living in a camper is so much less expensive than an actual home or apartment.
While in the military, I had several friends that decided to live in campers while moving every 2, 3, or 4 years.
The fees for campsites were around 25 to 30% (or less) of their monthly housing allowance.
They used the rest of the money to get out of debt, buy real estate and invest in their retirement.
No way, nope definitely not
@@xfhnhhgjbvcfg Definitely. campsite are cheap compared to brick and mortar. Even celebrities in California are now doing it. Living in multimillion dollar RV/motorcoaches compared to 30 million dollar houses with all the taxes that go with it.
Hah. That's cuz you live in America. Easy to live in a 300 dollar per month apartment in Asia.
@@xfhnhhgjbvcfg That's the same answer I got from my wife when I mentioned it to her. I was just throwing it out for discussion -- had to duck when she threw it back.
Yeah I have been living in a travel trailer for one year traveling the USA....I sold my house prior to this....all of the "stuff" that people have in their homes and do not need is crazy.....I had stuff that i got rid of that i did not know that i owned......there a people that have clothing that they owned in the 1980 s etc.....even now I live by the 12 month rule...if i do not use something within 1 year period it is gone baby...
They sold because they got money from their one and only asset, then bought a depreciating liability with the profit made, now interest rates are higher on homes, and the home prices are up. So basically, they got rid of their only asset to spend more money with no asset at all. I really want to know her thinking on this.
Not really liability, when the can now save or invest 100% of their disposable income
Yeah bad decision.
@D s did you not listen to the call? They want another house. Plus, historically, the biggest asset you have is your home. Try again.
They lose $3,000 on depreciation asset over however much time they owned it. But now they go rent throwing money out a window with no asset at all, not even a depreciating asset.
I was traveling 3 weekends a month for years. I stayed in hotels which was equal to renting a house, throwing away money. I bought a small camper. While it was depreciating, I at least had something tangible and useful. 10 years later I still have it. I saved at least $5,000 a year by having the camper vs hotel costs. The camper new was $10,000. Over years I saved at least $20-25,000. My depreciating asset is still going.
Dave hates campers, if they get used twice a year, I agree with Dave. But if it makes or saves you money, it’s great. The only thing I believe in renting is a carpet shampooer.
I'm getting a little tired of all this "depreciating asset talk." Go buy 100 ounces of gold then try to spend it at a Walmart when the Crash comes and the building is surrounded by 1000 starving people with worthless paper money in their pockets! Give me a break!
I don't think Dave is truly in touch with the market right now. Rent prices for houses are well over 2.3k a month. So she'd have to be making around 9k take home to afford that.
That’s why my wife and I are planning on living with my parents for a couple years this fall, and just build our nest egg even bigger for a hefty down payment on a home. Gotta do what you gotta do.
Ik it’s like that in CA I’m debating on renting an apartment but they want me to make 6-7k a month
Springfield, MO in a camper? Wow that hits close to home! It's a great area of the country to do it and that's why I do as well!

She’s not paying off the debt, they’re going to go spend their money to buy a house out of their range
Renting is not their best option right now unless they care more about status. Financially it would make better sense to stay in the camper and save up til they get far enough ahead that they can kick back and breathe comfortably 👍
Her sigh of relief was so great to hear❤😊
Sold their house to funnel money into a 40’ fifth wheel that is going down in value. Sound financial investment.
I wish Ramsey would do an episode where they actually show where a middle class wage earning couple could buy a home on a 15 year fixed mortgage where it does not exceed 25% of take home pay. Seems like most desirable areas are out of the question, including the Nashville Franklin area where they are located.
I don't think the math is there for under 6 figures. At 40K someone else said the max house was 200K so it seems reasonable to add an additional 40K to put 350K to 400K house in range.
@@donaldlyons17 Just using an online mortgage calculator, for a $250k home, 10% down, the P&I alone is about $2k on a 15 yr fixed mortgage at a 6.5% rate. That's not including property taxes, insurance, HOA dues or PMI. According to the Ramsey plan, the monthly household income would have to be $8-9k+ per month take home. And where can a home be had for $250k lately that's in a desirable area?
@@Jim_Curtis yep the best 2 houses I looked at were between 160 to 200K on major highways or rural areas so your very correct
@@donaldlyons17 The key to personal finances is budgeting effectively, so the average person can afford a house if they live within their means and not add to their debt with car payments, childcare, credit card debt, etc. But $40k household income is at or barely above poverty level, so the caller needs to get their income up first.
@@Jim_Curtis Her problem being income is a serious issue because budgeting effetely does not make stuff more affordable without it. I don't know anyone living on money they don't generate over time.

$90,000 a year and living in a camper in MO nope
I do not believe that this is the whole story. Get the husband on the phone!
Here is what I am thinking:
They had a home and a mortgage with a floating interest rate.
When inflation skyrocketed, the husband was smart enuogh to understand (or already witnessed), that the interest rates would follow, increasing their monthly payments. While both inflation and higher costs for interest would leave people with less money to buy houses, leading to decreasing house prices.
So Julie's husband was looking at a future with rising mortgage costs, rising costs of living and a falling price for their home? That's a fkn death trap for a family of 4 that lives off 50K!
He sold the house and was immediatly debt-free (37K in cash minus 23K in debt).
Now he is waiting for the house prices to drop to a level that actually reflects the current interest situation and tries to save up as much money as he can in the meantime. Which is crucial in times of expensive loans. Is he going too far by forcing his family to live in an RV? Yeah. Maybe.
On the other hand.. is living in an RV not some kind of a "rice and beans, beans and rice" situation?
How much does it cost to live in the camp? She should get control of her emotions. I bet the kids are going crazy. They should be able to save a lot of money in their situation.
It varies from $0 to over $100/day depending on the vehicle, season, property, and day of the week.
Pretty nice for retired and digital nomads.
I had a great time traveling in RV with friends from Tampa Florida to Alaska in 2021.
Met many RVers living in small vans and pickup campers to land yachts with varying sources of incomes and ages from 16 to over 80 years old.

Move to a place that allows rvs. Buy the land and install hookups. Then build.

Max 25% of income including insurance etc. America is so different from the UK, London particularly! I had to spend 45-50% of my income on a mortgage before any other spends, back in 2002 - 2010 and my loan was only c.100k (had some equity from the last house). I paid it off with extra payments too and became mortgage free around 2013/14. I look at American houses also, and see so much room, garden space and the like. Different world, you lucky Americans!
Campers depreciate. Sounds fun to travel and such but you will one day settle down. The kids will want space. They are going to be able to buy much less of a house than the house they had. For only buying a $20,000 RV, would have been better to rent house and still have it as an asset.
For some people it's more about the experience than depreciation of the vehicle especially with no kids, debt free, good finances,planning,etc..

Lmao i did the ''how much house can i afford calculator on their website''. This has to be some kind of joke. It says that we should buy a $70K house. But the tinyest apartment that's not even a real apartment starts at $200k. And a real house that isn't a complete dump starts at $350K+.
I guess the only way to make this work is to spend these $70K on a time machine to go back to a time when houses were cheap.
Btw what were these people thinking selling their house to clear 17K profit. They are going to spend way more money selling and buying back their house. Plus waste a few years throwing away rent money.

You just looking outside your means and doing no work at all to increase your income 😂 you broke, lazy mfs crack me up with all uour whining
@@superblump87 I'm not complaining, i own a home. But just showing how out of touch this is with reality. Like does Dave want young generations to live in garage boxes ? Houses aren't that cheap anymore.
You can buy a nice RV for a family of four people for $70,000. 😂😂
@@Bertuzz84 Interestingly enough, I just bought a 3br/2bath/2car garage home in a really nice neighborhood with great schools for $69,600 about 30 minutes ago. With about 5-8K in fixes it'll rent all day for $1,800. A lot has to do with where you live. Regardless though, 2+2=4 and a $1 is a $1.
It is going to be hard to find a house to rent with dogs. I own a rental management company and we do not allow pets in any of the properties we own and manage. They just do too much damage.
Rent people in east tennessee 3 bedeoom apartment is 1800$ a month a 3 bedroom house is like 2100 just interestand pmi than add in taxes and insurance ur officially house poor
Dude even if most people only bought exactly what they needed they still will need an income to support everything which may explain her home selling. I think they were having an income issue not a too much stuff problem.
@@donaldlyons17 Trump is cute...built good...
I wonder how much was their mortgage & were they able to pay it. Selling your home just to get the equity is baffling to me. Now if it was to reinvest I get it.
The way this economy is going I believe living in a family camper is the way to go. Rent is sky rocketing. So is the housing market.
What a sad situation.
2:00 again I ask, why when Dave is on here, does he need a co-host? He always has to redirect & get to the point. Makes the call go longer doing this
17K from a home sale in a good market?
Did they overpay in 2021 or buy with zero down?
If your take-home pay is under 4K/month, buying a home with a 1K payment will not be easy.
They were house poor
Made some idiotic decisions and got in debt and after all bills are paid I only have 100 dollars a week in my pocket so living in a camper would save me about 2k a month.
When can I call in??
They should have never sold their home. Mistake #1. Had they worked a little harder for a little longer, all of their debt would have been paid off.
Why would you throw money away at a rental for 12-18 months when you already own a fifth wheel? Seems like a waste. If you're absolutely going stir-crazy, then fine. If it's tough but manageable, then stay put.
I take it you don’t have kids?
@@calminacrisis126 That's correct. Sure, I may not understand the difficulties of raising kids in a small home on wheels, but I also wouldn't have any unless my financial situation is completely sorted out.
@@besweeeet2 Make sure your parameters of “completely sorted out” are not so strict that they prohibit you from having a family when you are able.
If you look at having kids from a financial perspective, and really really consider everything, it will make zero sense and you may never have them. Lots of people fall into this trap.
Of course the key is to visualize yourself as very old, and what you would have wanted your life to look like when you look back. Then work from there. It’s an exercise that pinpoints what you really value.
Exactly! Thank you! Dave did not ask the right questions.
Please just let Dave do the talking.
I looked into doing this and renting a spot for hookups was still 550$ a month.. so stupid.
$18.00 a day with no property taxes? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.
@@ceciliapetrowsky2572 Renting an apartment isn't much more... and with that you have a lot more room.
@@TheFlyingZulu The apartments must be in a very small town in a rural area.
The Ramsey team needs to update their number they're not realistic. 25% on a 15 year doesnt exist anymore. I've bought and sold several houses and none using their numbers and I've made hundreds of thousands of dollars doing it. If i would have waited for their numbers i would have missed out.
And the bankers thank you!
Stay in the camper another 3 months and they would be golden!
Do you have 1k saved?
She just said that she got 17k profit from the house.
And no Dave, she have 17k saved, not 23k.
@Jimmy, did you just pass 8th grade math? You trying to flex on Dave?
WHEN YOUR LIVIN IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!
If you're in East TN...rent will be outrageous..PLEASE DONT MOVE TO EAST TN!!!!!!
Wait they sold a house to net $17k and live in a camper with kids and dogs?
What on earth was she thinking?
These people acted with very little thought but they can do a lot better if they follow this advice. Good luck guys!
To some but not all. My wife and i are living in our rv since January 2018 (and counting) and able to save 4k to 5k a month from our salary since we do not have a house payment, property tax, insurance, expensive utilities and we are free traveling on the road to build memories as tomorrow is never guaranteed. Now, because of our simple life and monthly savings, we will be able to pay cash on a house and lot down the road if and when we decide to hang the keys. Take your share and make it your best.

YES! Live in camper, eat rice and beans forever
That was 20 years ago.
Have choices now. Rice and beans are options.
There are debt free FIRE and digital nomad types living in campers with 5G. Fancy appliances like convection and pizza ovens powered with solar/batteries and the grocery stores as their meat refrigeration and food storage.
