There's Always a Woman - Carol Burnett / Ruthie Henshall

- Great catfight duet as Carol Burnett and Ruthie Henshall sing "There's Always a Woman."
Sondheim wrote this for "Anyone Can Whistle." This song was cut from that Broadway production, which only lasted nine performances. It's perfect for "Putting It Together", though.
This excerpt is from the highly recommended Region 1 DVD "Putting It Together" of a live 1999 performance. Other excerpts are available at

The genius of Sondheim and perfectly performed.
These women are amazing :)
awww..Bronson at the end.
Great to hear performed by women over 18
Hilarious and absolutely lovely! XD
Sad face that Buddy's Blues isn't here!!!
This women are great!
I love the French part!
- Parlez vous.
- Coq Au Vin.
- Watch your mouth.
Clearly most people from the audience didn't get it, they only laughed at the "carbon monoxide" bit. :(
Too bad, these both ladies are FANTASTIC!
Chicken in wine?
LEGENDS.
I wish this was on Pandora
does anyone know where I can get the sheet music or instrumental track of this song?? I really need it for an assessment!!
At 1:28, Carol says "Bon Voyage" and they start trading French phrases. Ruthie's final phrase is "coq au vin" - chicken in wine - and Carol replies "Watch your mouth!"
is it mean that when i think of angela peterlli when i hear this ?
If anyone has the sheet music for this song, I'd die to have it.
i think with bamboo, as she said as long as its ground, i think she was talking about the many species which produce cyanide
@PinkCowgirl925 - It's not really a conversation-- it means:
"Good travels"
"Goodbye"
"On the side"
"My love"
"Do you speak..."
"Chicken with wine"
But they are more said because they are commonly used French phrases in english conversations
It's extremely difficult to find as it was cut from the show...I don't think it's available to the "general public"...
the song was great but at the end when bronson comes out and says my turn was soo funny.
could you post the next song please?

Anyone know where to get the sheet music for this ? Having lot of bother trying to find it. Cheers
I can't help but ask. At some point Carol Burnett says ''Watch your mouth!'' What did Ruthie say? I cannot figure out...
"Coq de vin," I think.
There are many plays on words throughout the song.
1:24 Jacquelyn the Ripper - Jack the Ripper is an infamous serial killer
1:55 Hand in the till - someone who is stealing
2:00 $5 diamond: a cheap fake
2:02 $3 bill: doesn't exist - a total fake
2:24 poisonous gas vs. slivers of glass
2:30 bamboo is efficient: slivers of bamboo hammered beneath fingernails is an infamous torture technique
HEYY COULD YOU SEND ME THE KARAOKE?
DId you ever get the sheet music and where?
What are the lyrics after Jacqueline the ripper?
what is the french part mean
For any anyone trying to find the sheet music i found it on www.sheetmusicdirect.com for a duet with piano accomp
@loganmech oooh thx
Oh thanks! But let me ask you one more thing. Why would she say so? And do you know where i can find the whole play? You see i live in greece and i would like you to tell me if you can... :)
Well, Ruthie Henshall is actually British, so that would be her accent coming through.
The older and younger women are rivals here for the older man. They pretend they are friends on the surface, but there is an underlying battle.
At 1:05, Carol offers Ruthie a drink, a brandy, Quantro (orange liqueur) or hemlock (a poison.)
At 1:15, Carol lists benign aspects of being a woman, but then says "the carbon monoxide that fills the garage" - an easy form of suicide... or murder.
Such an awesome song! I finally found the sheet music for it!!! Message me if you want it!
I'd love to find the sheet music. Am putting together a fundraiser for next month for a theater program and this would be perfect - thank you!
ppjamis Sure no problem, can you e-mail me at ADDdelledonne@gmail.com, then I can send an attachment.
No problem, just e-mail me so I can send an attachment.
Alexandra Delle Donne Do you still have the sheet music?? I would absolutely love it if possible!
Do you still have the sheetmusic???
gorgonjola, I can see how this would be a very difficult video for someone speaking English as a second language - but your written English is perfect.
Although they are exchanging nonsense phrases in French, Carol takes the last phrase out of context. "Coq" in French is a rooster (male chicken) while in English "cock" (pronounced the same) is slang for penis.
Putting It Together is a loosely connected set of songs. Click on "more info" for a link to more videos from the musical.
What two characters are they playing from Anyone Can Whistle?
Nicole Ann Carol Burnett is playing Cora (originally portrayed by Angela Lansbury) and Ruthie Henshall is Nurse Fay (originally portrayed by Lee Remick).

Isabella Armas Leon if we could have the sheet music that would be wonderful
Could you email me the karaoke track at seg110682@gmail.com ??? Thanks!!
I saw ANYONE CAN WHISTLE when it tried out in Phila. So much good stuff, but.... Broadway is unforgiving. Even many of Sondeheim's (now) classic shows, revived again and again, were savaged by the likes of Walter Kerr (who?).
At 1.22 eveyone laughs. Why? Can anyone tell me?
The carbon monoxide that fills the garage lol
Carol’s singing about carbon monoxide filling up a garage (which is deadly), but she makes her voice sound so sweet!
What’s this musical called 😭 ?
Putting it together
Anyone Can Whistle
No one has bothered to clarify? LoL
The song was written for and cut from Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle. It was the used in his musical revue, Putting it Together, which is what this clip is from.
What musical is this from?
The song was written for Anyone Can Whistle but the musical in this clip is Putting it Together :)
Note: it was cut from Anyone Can Whistle
Great performance. Pity this song had to be written. My how the exquisite female has fallen in society's formerly high esteem.
I think it just wasn't important that she use an accent.
