As Sandy Monro might say, making it with less parts, means less possible failure points. Or maybe a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Lessening the links or parts means less chance of it not working. Aptera might have around 1100 parts, whereas a Tesla might have 7000+ parts. Let's just say keeping it more simple has it's beneficial side.
Tesla model 3 has 15 moving parts. And they are some of the most reliable vehicles ever made, with highest crash safety testing. Aptera is an autocycle, will not meet crash safety standards of modern 4 wheel vehicle, and they have made 0 vehicles for sale. Why compare a once failed start up to the beheamoth in the space? Its like your buddies start up smart phone vs android.. no one thinks they are even in the same league. Electrical vehicles is all they have in common, tesla actually makes them tho. 7 million+ on road world wide.
My 2004 Sentra had cloth seats and no seat heaters. Never missed that, but would have liked a heated steering wheel. However, low tech gloves worked there. Only generally need heated seats for Leather seats.
This was cool. Your point about there being too much stuff or too much performance on some current EVs and at the same time not enough practical uses are spot on. "The more things change, the more theybstay the same" quote also applies most definitely. Would be nice to see you guys possibly do a comparison of the development/vision of late 1800s, early 1900s EVs verses current EVs, positives and negatives of them vs ICEs.
Fun episode AGAIN! Did you know: The 1914 Detroit Electric Model 47 Brougham was an EV with style, driven by Clara Ford, Henry Ford's wife, into the 1930s. Detroit Electric Model 47: She chose a 1914 Detroit Electric Model 47 Brougham. It was made in Detroit
With Aptera, the pursuit of superior efficiency has always been their primary goal. But years ago so much of the EV technology was brand new, with few suppliers, custom components, and batteries that cost 10 times as much as today. Aptera died before mostly because of a lack of financial support. But as EV technologies and batteries became more common, accepted, and affordable, Steve and Chris decided that it was the right time to try to build a new version of the Aptera using the latest EV, solar, motor, chassis, and manufacturing technologies. I believe that (despite economic setbacks) there is an even greater demand for super efficient, affordable transportation. Plus it looks like the Aptera will be great fun to drive!
Used teslas are the affordable ev option. Tons of old s and 3 models that are affordable, still under warranty, and even cheaper older out of warranty s still run great (I own one with 131k, got it with 69k miles) was 5k less then prius before the dealer markup and taxes from toyota when I bought my s. Put 20k+ miles a yr on and road tripped from socal to norcal, and across arizona.. all miles offset by solar on tesla stations. Great, clean option
Interesting, I made a reply once awhile back on this very subject. So many people were saying that Aptera needs to add a 4-5 seat car with 4 wheels. I know they are planning that in the future but I wrote that they should follow the strategy that Ford and VW did in the early years. Build one vehicle and make incremental improvements and/or lower the price . Maybe, sometime in the future add other models. There are still lots of Model Ts and Beetles around because they built so many and were so reliable.
I'm still driving an ICE vehicle, because I'm still paying it off. Have under $10k still to pay on it, which I hope to have paid off next year. Once paid off, my plan is to stick with it, doing bare minimum with it to keep it going until my Aptera shows up. The other EV I'd be interested, other than the Aptera, would be I think the X-Bus EV? It is supposed to be highly modular, with the main driver cab section and then many options for the rear of the vehicle. Could range from being a camper, pickup truck, bus, etc. Although not nearly as efficient as an Aptera, I wouldn't mind having it for a group trip or when needing to haul some stuff. Maybe even have the camper option and take it to go camping with my brother, since they go camping often during the summer. It would be the go-to utility vehicle for anything I couldn't do with the Aptera.
I have a positive way to think of the Cybertruck. Tesla sees the need to improve technology like drive-by-wire, 800v (new for Tesla), stainless steel, durable glass, 48v, 4680, etc. The market can’t support a high-volume platform right out of the gate and all of these changes are a huge investment. These are also somewhat risky ventures that haven’t come to full production very easily. The 4680s are way behind, and the glass isn’t as durable as hoped. The solution to fund the switch and mitigate the risk is a more expensive, luxury vehicle like the Cybertruck. It makes business sense, even if it isn’t the best end-user product.
The reason that EV’s have heated seats is because they can keep occupants comfortable using less power than heating the whole cabin. In 1994 I bought a Saturn SL’s for $13,000 CDN. No radio or passenger side mirror it had crank windows. Drove that car 800,000 miles.
I drive for efficiency. I routinely get 300 mile range in my 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV. I am never the first car off the line at a light (I’ve seen that car get hit but light runners) I don’t drive fast anywhere. I drive efficiently. Im the guy in the right lane driving 5-10 miles under the speed limit getting passed and honked at. I work in retail and always carry my products out to the car for the customer. Without fail, it’s for someone driving alone in a vehicle that can carry 9 people. I don’t have to PUSH EV’s. I just ask them how much does it cost to fill this tank at $4/gallon to fill this at the gas station? To a person they complain about the cost.
No motor maker is following the lessons learned form the Model T because the tech is so advanced to give us the clean future off of batteries. An affordable option is still desirable, Leaf, Soul, I-Mev, or their likes are not being replaced with other like-minded vehicles. Aptera is not coming fast enough...
Lit motors. Would have been much further along had the owner CEO not been a thrill seeker. He likes speed and he races motorcycles he got into a huge wreck in 2015 I think was the year. Had not been in a huge debilitating wreck with lots and lots of injuries I'm sure the company would be much further along it's his fault in that he put the company at risk by being a risk taker in his leisure time. With that being said I hope he healed up well and is doing okay. But his choices in his private life affected this company.
Ahhh. I heard a little about that before. We are working to set up an interview. I hope to learn if things are different now. Thank you for the comment!
I looked at LIT Motors. It costs as much as an Aptera and didn't look nearly as practical or versatile. Fun maybe, but not a daily driver and road tripper like I plan to use my Aptera.
@@dtl LIT definitely would not work for a Costco run. You might strap one grocery bag in the back seat, that’s about it. With Aptera, I can take my wife and fill the back with $500 of groceries from Costco, then have plenty of power to climb 2200’ back up I-70 into the mountains and home. (Might exceed the recommended gross weight doing that, but most vehicles do if you load them up).
@@dtl Also, I think the LIT was only very slightly more efficient in Miles/KWh than Aptera. Doesn’t look nearly as crashworthy as an Aptera either. I’m sticking with Aptera.
The only difference between the $25K Tesla and the Robo Taxis is one has a steering wheel and pedals, and the other does not. It's the same car, same platform. So while Tesla is making a huge push to improve FSD, and make the Robo Taxis, or Cyber Cab a reality, and that's all you see in the media.... the $25K vehicle is not forgotten, and will take very little adjustment to the manufacturing line to include the pedals and steering wheel.
Sounds like you've made quite a bit in your investments. What have you successfully invested in where you've made a significant percentage on interest? Could always use good advice from someone who has already done it themselves.
California? I agree. Phillipines? Totally different. I was just there in Dumaguete, and it's rare someone was going over 35 mph. I think each country would have it's appropriate specs. Europe would also be slower in many areas, not all. Like the autobahn, for example.
Car companies earn more money than on the bare car on the accessories you suggest the should strip off in order to make it more affordable. So I highly doubt they will oblige to your (and my) noble wish.
What a great comparison!
Simple and cheap is often the better way. Such as the VW Beetle.
