  • Use this Golf Chipping Cheat Code to simplify the rule of 12 and get up and down more often when you miss a green.
    ________________________________________________________________________
    1. Each Club has a magic number. SW=2; PW=3; 9 Iron=4; 8 Iron= 5; 7 Iron=6; 6 Iron=5
    2.Count the number of steps from the hole to your ball.
    3. Divide the number of steps by the magic number of the club you want to use. That's the number of steps you want to hit the ball in the air.
    4. Read the Green and pick a target on the green at the number of steps you calculated above.
    5. Adjust for uphill, downhill or super fast or super slow greens
    6. Chip the ball to your target and watch it land and roll out near the hole.

    Thanks for your take on chipping. I am just getting back into golf after a long absence and have been struggling with my short game around the green. Your method makes sense and is easy to use. Will definitely give it a go on my next practice session 👍

      Any consistent strategy for picking a landing spot and roll distance and practicing hitting your spot will go along way towards improving your chipping

  • @Reloadeez
    @Reloadeez Місяць тому

    I estimate the halfway point between me and the hole, if it's a good landing spot it's a 1:1 carry to roll ratio chip. If not I halve that spot between me again, if that's a good landing spot it's a 1:3 carry to roll ratio chip. If not i'll halve that spot between me again, if that's a good landing spot it's a 1:7 carry to roll ratio chip. If it's moderately down hill go a club weaker, moderately uphill a club stronger. Severely downhill 2-3 clubs weaker, severely uphill 2-3 clubs stronger.

      Exactly I do something very similar when I'm in a situation where walking off the distance would take extra time. MOST chips work with a ratio somewhere between 1:1 and 1:4 or 5. The critical thing is understanding the difference between clubs and having a strategy for carry and roll

    Hi John
    I think your formula is the same as Paul Runyen's but its simpler. Well thought out.

      Exactly and thank you. His formula is right. Just a little complex. I like simple things

    I heard somewhere (not sure if it’s accurate or not) that actually back in Runyon’s day he called his rule the Rule of 11. But because iron lofts are much stronger in this more modern era it is now called the Rule of 12.

    Hi John
    In the cheat codes, should the code for the 6 Iron be =7 not =5?

  • @geoffcohen613

    I worked out a similar number, by using land on 5 m. Mine is different than mentioned here, so what.
    Then i chipped from off green and went through bag from 53 to hybrid and wrote them down on a small card which i laminated and hang on my bag.
    So i found then just have to select landing spot.
    Note
    For this drill to be effective need to practice vhipping to a spot.😢

    6-13-23 what if your ball is say 10 steps off the green to a short pin, only 4 steps on the green, wouldn’t you have to land in the rough

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt  Рік тому +3

      Excellent question. In this situation, I'd have to either land in the rough or knowingly hit past the pin or attempt a flop shot. Would make the decision based on the condition of the rough and whether or not I thought the ball would roll/bounce through it accurately. I wouldn't want to hit a 54 degree wedge 10 steps and have it roll out 10 more or 6 steps past the hole...but that would be better than getting stuck in the rough and still off the green.

    I have been using the rule of 12 for a long time and like your idea of doing the math first. Unfortunately you erred when doing the Math. Rule of 12 states that to determine which club take the ratio (the ratio is carry divided by runout). So a 3 ratio means the ball will run out 3 times the length of carry. We are in agreement so far. But here's where I differ. Rule of 12 says take the ratio number (3 in this case) and subtract it from 12 so 12-3 = 9. So a 9 iron is a 3 not a 4 as you stated. And an 8 iron is a 4,, 7 iron a 5, 6 iron a 6 etc. For the wedges I assigned my PW a 2, and lob wedge a 1.

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt  7 місяців тому +1

      I see your point and don’t disagree. I simply started with my sand wedge which Carries and rolls equally which makes it a 2. Therefore my PW is a 3, 9 a 4 and so on. The concept is the same with some adjustments for individuality and how you set up and use your wedges and short irons

    • @Mike-ev9yn
      @Mike-ev9yn 7 місяців тому

      @@misteroneputt If your sand wedge has an equal carry to roll ratio, that would be a 1. 1 to 1 is a 1.

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt  7 місяців тому

      @@Mike-ev9yn you are missing the point. Yes, one is a one. But if you use one, then you would hit the ball all the way to the hole. A carry of 1 and roll one is 2 parts total so the ratio is 1:2 ratio means the ball carries 1/2 of the way to the hole and rolls the other 1/2 of the way to the hole. That means you would divide the number of steps from your ball to the hole in half which means divide by two. That makes my sandwich a two. My pitching wedge carries 1/3 of the distance and rules 2/3 of the distance so for a pitching wedge I divide the total number of steps by three. And call that Club ate three. It changes a little bit when you preselect distances and Clubs and lock the math in an advance. It’s a modified version of the rule of 1212.

      @frazzled924 2 місяці тому

      9 iron rolls 3 times what it carries. 1 carry + 3 roll = 4. Runyan's way: 5 paces to green + 15 paces to pin = 3:1 ratio or 9 iron. Mr One Putt's way: 20 paces to pin divided by 4 (9iron) = land the ball 5 paces away.

    • @Mike-ev9yn
      @Mike-ev9yn 2 місяці тому

      @@frazzled924 You're all missing my point. The reason it is called the rule of 12 is to make it incredibly simple to pick which club to use without having to memorize it. With the rule of 12, once you establish the roll/carry number (say its 15/5 = 3) You use that number to determine the right club by dividing 12 by it so 12/3 tells you that you need a 9 iron. No memorization required. It's really very simple, don't complicate it.
