- WHEW - I'm back from tour and you know what that means - finishing up all these videos from my backlog. Sorry about the delay, but here is episode 1 for my Bumbershoot 2019 vlogs. In this video we'll be loading in the lighting rig and making sure it works properly for our guest LDs in the coming days.
Bumbershoot is a music and arts festival that takes place annually in Seattle, Washington. Since I live here, I've been able to participate in the production of this show whenever my schedule has allowed. onereel.org/bumbershoot

Have you heard about Midas PRO-X getting drunk? Console died after one of the people in public threw a beer on it. There is a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/5_mhj74pQw8/v-deo.html
Too bad the beer didn't hit the Chamsys, i don't like Chamsys so much ;-) Anyway, the sound was not muted, the DSP in Midas is actually on stage, and console is just control surface.

love how you always include the troubleshooting in the videos. With experience of course always comes the knowledge of knowing how to fix certain issues, but with you sharing your wisdom it definitely helps compile the knowledge, thank you for that!

Nice rig Christian .. I started in Australia with the first robotic lighting to hit Australia to rent.. They were just par 64,s which I ran ray light kits in them .. I was about your age then .. Then took on David Bowie and many other big bands .. I,m 60 yrs old now .. I designed alot of huge lighting rigs back in my day . maybe one day I may meet you Christian.. I remember one year at this stage, they had a serious technical issue. Everything went dark, and silent, and a few minutes later, we saw the screens come back to life with the Resolume program starting up, then the stage lights. Then, the mic came on and the act that had been playing (Odesza) cam on-mic and explained that they’d “lost power.” Is the stage powered by a generator, or is it power sockets somewhere in the stadium? What would cause a blackout completely isolated to the stage? This stadium is also in serious disrepair, so there could have been a fuse or breaker that cut power off for a second and shut all the equipment down.
Also, That name “Resolume” brings back memories of the screens on stage that they could never get set up correctly one year. They had some kind of test screen with measurements and a color wheel of sorts, and they were trying to get the aspect ratio right. However, there was an issue where both side screens would zoom in/out at the same time and so one was never set correctly, From memory, it took a while to fix.

What type of switch are you using? it is looking like a standard tplink 8port gbit, but i keep getting session collisions when using mine (might be one managed feature).
@Christian Jackson, if I'm not using a network switch, which Ethernet port do I connect out of MA2 console to my laptop running MA2onPC and MA3D? Thanks! Hope to learn more tips and tricks from you. :)

KeyArena renos supposed to be done in 2021. There's a cozy events space in the Museum of Pop Culture nearby that you could check out (worth the trip otherwise!). Unsure how much of their setup is in-house tho'.

Curious.... i’ll start using defaults to fix profile errors - i’ve been fixing the fixture profiles and then exporting them to USB.
I’ve had to build a substantial number of fixture profiles for some cheaper end gear that i’ve had to use.
I worked this festival as well! I was doing playback for COIN. Were you working the day the barricade broke?

Well, I moved to seattle ~5 years ago, did some freelance gigs for R90 lighting way back then as a lighting tech/programmer. Kept in touch with them and now if they need an extra LD for a festival and I happen to be in town, I'll do one.

I remember this stage, it was great, and the last Bumbershoot to happen as of today. The stadium kinda sucks but the music was good. I remember the sound system was d&b J and V series with A few Q series and B2 subwoofers, but had no idea about the lighting rig, other than it being impressive in my mind. Some big, and I mean big acts played here, the lumineers, Tyler the creator (was originally Lizzo but cancelled) and Rezz, many others as well. If I recall, this was the year where Jai wolf was booked into the too-small fisher green stage and caused overcrowding, and a fence was pushed over, canceling the show.
Your memory is spot on! It was very interesting with the Lumineers bringing in their entire touring rig via solotech. And yes, that Jai Wolf rebooking onto this stage was a crazy occurrence. I was on stage teching the floor package while he was playing.
How can i get to become a member of DMX stage lighting and programming them and setting them up? And what is the DMX light's brand name and the light's name's? ( I'm also a DJ too ) i wish i can do that lighting console stuff programming and stuff like that. Bytheway, what is thatlighting software on your laptop to also visualize and conenct and backup etc
Great video! Is it possible for someone to bring their own laptop to the concert and then connecting to your session and messing you up live?
I suppose if you bring a network cable and physically connect it to my switch at FOH, sure!
But then I could just add a password to the session.

What switch do you use or recommend for MA2 stuff?
Isnt it a generic Gigabit ethernet switch?
You need to get NE8FFs for connecting to your switch without dismantling the cable!

Dude, get some ethercon to RJ45 jumpers. Taking the end off results in missing bits. :-)
OnStageLighting Or ethercon couplers, they work great and they’re versatile
I see many LDs pull up the MA screens. Does it not damage them since they are motorized ?
Not if you press the screen unlock keys by holding MA and the set key.

How many price in this equipment?
quick question, when your using analog DMX lines, and want to try Art-Net, does MA switch between DMX and Art-Net automatically?
Firstly, Dmx is a digital signal whether it’s being run as a serial data link in a 3 conductor cable or over Ethernet. No such thing as analog dmx.
You can set MA up however you like. You can output dmx from the console, artnet, sacn, in any combination as long as you have parameters and are a part of a session. The session master is the only one that outputs Ethernet dmx protocols.

you use a full backup for the grandMA ... shouldn't you make a full second network setup so neither a cable break or a failure of the switch can kill your show?

Really depends on a lot of factors. For me personally it was about 6 years before I started doing larger shows.

Dangerouss ground packages are lights on the stage, as opposed to lights in the truss which are “flown”
@@danrachlin1966 whilst true most would refer a ground package as a part of an artist set.
The house rig will have ground mounted fixtures for sure but what is referred to in this video and typically in the industry is a "set" of fixtures normally on risers or wheeled sections that are brought in (and taken away) for one specific act.
A little like backing dancers, pyro and for example artists unique branding such as the killers K facade.

A DMX terminator will only save your butt if your fixtures are utter crap. Now, if you have really shitty fixtures.. then I think dmx reflections would be the least of your problems.
