  • Total Destruction Of A Once Beautiful Woodland... Why do we do this!!! lovely small oasis full of my childhood memories has been smashed down beyond recognition... We don't deserve to be the guardians of this beautiful earth of ours we really don't.
This was a really hard video for me to produce, film and edit... Totally unexpected to see my Grandads happy place ending up like this..
    Shame bloody damn shame...

I went fishing once with my grandad near Coalhouse fort in Essex. The place where we fished is very very different now because of erosion. There used to be a fair distance between the path and the river, but now there is hardly any distance as the banks of the river on that side have been washed away. The old concrete jetty thing that we fished from is reduced to a few chunks of broken concrete. Sometimes when the tides or storms wash away a lot of the silt there you can find tons of broken pottery, broken clay pipes and all sorts. Other times the silt covers it all and you are lucky to find a few tiny fragments of glass and pottery.
Edit: Just as I finished typing this I looked at the suggested videos on the right hand side and the video at the top is one of yours 'Walks Along The Thames Coalhouse Fort'. - That's weird and cool lol. You probably know exactly what I mean by how much of it has eroded away on the banks of the thames along there

I know exactly where you mean, on the video we find some old bottles in the soil on the edge of the river, I'm yet to clean them up still in my coat pockets...ATB Chris.

I feel your pain, my friend. Same thing happened to me.
Used to be a wooded area, about the same size as your woods, on the outskirts of Liverpool, where my friends and I used to go camping in the summer months.
Many happy times and memories of a place that we used to escape to., away from the grime of the City, until the farmer decided to flatten it all and turn it into a sterile field. Thing is, it wasn't his land to start with so he had no right to do such a thing.
Most of it's gone now. Going past the area today makes me sad for what was. Only the memories and a few photographs remain. But at least we have those.

Memories are indestructible. . Doesn't matter what anyone does to the land , that steel water tank will always be there . Banging away for tea time . .

So sad it made me weep for trees are so important.. less trees more floods, the gov don't care for they are to blame.. seems no one cares anymore and happening all over England. Hope you find reasons to keep smiling, memories are precious and never forgotten.

Having lived in Abbey Wood as a kid that is how the bottom of our road used to be like before they built the bovis estate and Thamesmead, it’s hard to picture it now but we still have our distant memories mate. 😀 stay safe David 👍

Had the same thing in a little village in Kent , I was brought up on a farm in Cowden village near Edenbridge when I went back my old house was being demolished the barns were turned into posh houses the woods were all cut down then to top it all I got thrown out of the fields I walked for countless years by an irate builder accusing me of trespassing 🤬 I’m 70 now and childhood memories destroyed 😢

It’s sad when beautiful forests are flattened and it must be terrible for the wildlife.
Nice that you have managed to keep your Grandad’s driving licence -and it has survived all those years.
Just going through the emotional rollercoaster cleaning out my Mum’s apartment which she moved to after Dad died. Only been a few days so it’s really hard but have found a lot of interesting photos and stuff about the family from years ago. Thankfully the park that our family home backed onto is still there but who knows what may happen in the future.

I know exactly how this feels. Many years ago I went back to visit the village I grew up in, big mistake.
Gone were the fields and woods we used to roam as kids, and also gone the small farm where we could buy a tray of eggs. The old half brick and half timber bungalows like I used to live in had gone as well.
It's now a soulless dump of very expensive properties with no character or community, a place where people don't even know their neighbours names, let alone standing out at the front gate having a natter.
After about twenty minutes of looking at his I left - never to go back there again.

What a lovely story and memories mate. Been tempted for a few years to do something similar on where my outdoor/walking/hiking all started. I was feral from the age of 6, wandering the streets, brooks, canals, river and railways around Reading.

It’s a shame when your childhood memories are taken away, i was the same when they built houses on a tiny woodland i used to play in when i was a nipper, that’s progress for you mate not always for the good. Adapt and overcome mate

I despise the people who do this, i resent the people who move in, and you can bet your life those who push for infinity more people to come into the country wont be having any of it anywhere where they live. All of it fuelled by greed.
