- I'm sure I'm not the only one who's tried to work out the logic of 'grande' somehow being translated to 'medium' in certain coffee shops, so this scene from Frasier tickled me. It's taken from Season 10, Episode 20, 'Goodbye, Nervosa'. What's wrong with small, medium, and large?
Only Frasier can start his coffee order with the words "I am hashing over an ethical dilemma..."
Classic show.
We could try using that phrase but would just get funny looks.
Yes, for us coffee shop regulars that would be quite the dilemma of any sort.

Me too. When he came to the end of it I wondered how many takes it took before he managed it without laughing.

"Piccolo" would probably be a poignant choice for Marty Crane. Remember he feuded with a good friend on "The Force" because the guy told all of Martin's fellow cops that he cried at "Brian's Song." Which of course was the 1971 classic starring James Caan as the tragically ended Chicago Bears football star Brian Piccolo!😔🏈☕☕📺B.W.
I've always really loved this scene - it's one of the most ridiculous conversations in the whole series XD

I utterly refuse to play the "weird names for different cup sizes" game and resolutely order 'medium' in any coffee shop. If they then start the nonsense of "We only have Thimble, Bucket, or Oil-drum" I tell them 'the one in the middle'.
Same thing with restaurants that try to be "new age" and "trendy" by serving food on anything other than a plate(or bowl for soup). I've seen thick wooden boards and steaks served on roof tiles. I mean seriously, get a grip.

@ Deco Dolly. If Frasier adopted your stance in an episode of Frasier and impatiently told the waitress "No need to list the sizes, I'll have the one in the middle" she would then tell him they have four size choices :)
The worst is when you ask for small and they say: we only do Medium, Large or Extra Large.
Give me the smallest then. And why is it called Medium if it isn't between anything. That's what Medium MEANS 😞

His little horrified flop at the end is beautiful. XD As is his trying to figure out just how much coffee he's getting by going through the sizes of the various chains he's visited so far. You'd think they'd at least have the cups on display. . .then again, their seating option is "beanbag."

At Starbucks, a large iced coffee corresponds to the second-largest they offer. It always prompts them to ask if I want the large, or the new largest which is huge. They don’t call it huge, but it is.

The best approach is to say "I'll have whichever isn't as big as the biggest you do, but not as little as the littlest. If that applies to two or more of the available options not ruled out by my not wanting the biggest or littlest, I'll have the one that isn't as little as the two littlest you do, but is littler than any other."
When they've sent a few moments working that out, cheerfully point to someone else's cup and say "That size would be ok".
This works especially well if the one you point to turns out to be either the largest or smallest they do.
You should be a sitcom writer.

I think in this episode, Felicity Huffman meets Niles and says....Hey Frasier is this your stunt double? Then later she says...goodbye Frasier...goodbye emergency Frasier...one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.

Thanks for posting this. My local independent radio station has been playing excerpts from this clip for over a decade and I had been going out of my mind to try to figure out what it's from.

I think we all have a firm dislike of these places that act a little too pretentious when some people just want a drink.
I use to work at Starbucks so I have a little bit of random history facts concerning those size names at Starbucks.
So we know the sizes of small,medium and large as "Tall","Grande"and "Venti" at Starbucks. When Starbucks first started out there was a size called "short" which was 6-8 fl oz so the "Short" was the small, the "Tall" was the medium and the "Grande" was the large. when the "Venti" was first introduced it was the extra large. The name came from the Italian word for twenty.
After a while Starbucks decided to make the Tall the standard for small, the Grande for medium and Venti the large. While the Short size isn't on the menu, it's still available by request today.

I feel the same when people start talking about ounces, pounds, miles and those "mucho macho" measures :P
I do too as my country has used the Metric system for 50 years now so I have no idea what an ounce, mile, or foot is but grammes, kilometres and metres are all okay measurements by me! 😊
Samantha McGill a foot is like 30cm so the length of the average ruler, a mile is 1.6km or 1600 metres and I don’t think anyone uses ounces outside of maybe cooking out of a recipe book everyone just uses grams and kilograms mostly or pounds at a pinch which is one fourteenth of a stone.

Data:
- the colossal is the same as the nervosa grande.
-frasier says that the semi-colossal is also 3/4ths of the colossal.
-mucho and semi-colossal are the same
So:
mucho = semi-colossal = 3/4 colossal = 3/4 nervosa grande
If the ratio between the mucho and the mucho macho is the same as the ratio of the semi-colossal to the colossal (i.e. 3/4), then we have:
mucho = 3/4 mucho macho = 3/4 nervosa grande
So a mucho macho would be exactly the same as a nervosa grande.
On the other hand if we believe what Frasier says (5/8 mucho macho = nervosa grande). From that we can guess the relationship between the mucho and the mucho macho.
mucho = x mucho macho = 3/4 nervosa grande
and
5/8 mucho macho = nervosa grande
Then we have:

I once went to a fast-food chain's local establishment and asked for a small soda. The clerk said "We don't have small. We only have large and medium." I told her "Medium means 'in the middle.' Then it wouldn't be funny, which is the purpose of a sitcom. But still, it's not the barista's job to show him the cups, the customer should check the menu first before ordering so that they know what the sizes are. And even if it would've saved time by having the barista show him the cups, then shouldn't Frasier have had enough sense to ask for them himself??

I've only ever really drank black coffee. Either an espresso in a tiny cup, or if it's a long black I don't care what size cup as long as it's a decent mix of water and coffee.

I once went into a burger stand and as placing my order they showed 3 sizes and prices of drink cups. I asked for a medium drink. The dimwitted teenager looked perplexed and said they only have regular, large , and extra large. I just said give me the one in the middle.
To be fair, working in retail kinda makes your brain to go on autopilot sometimes.
