Max Yuryev I have a few more days before I'm eligible to get a refund for the gh5. I already have a fs5 but I just couldn't push myself to get a another sony unless it's the A7s3.... should I just return the GH5 or deal with the autofocus issue until something better comes out. please let me know.
Привет. У Можно попросить в вкратце перевести их итог? С английским не дружу, но судя по картинке я понял, что покупать вторую версию можно только из-за стабилизатора, который работает в вместе со стабом матричным. А в остальном он такой же. Или нет?
+Gergö Nyirö haha :) work first! We were very limited on time. We did the conclusion after we were supposed to be checked out (with late checkout) and still a walk away from hotel so had to finish up and get back quickly.
Max , thank you so much. I had no knowledge of the Mark ii, after already purchasing the v1. After watching this video, i feel confident that the difference between the two is not as vast as i originally thought. I know feel happy saving the money i did purchasing the Mark i. Thanks for this video
Thanks max. There weren't many (virtually none) full comparisons between the two lenses. I decided to get the v1 with the same idea of putting the money towards a prime since the to mirrorless prior to this video. So thank you for putting my mind at ease. Keep up the good work!!!
You can try to unmount the lens for about 1-2mm rotation as if you are going to remove it from the camera - the result will be that the camera will lose control over the lens and it will not software correct it. This is a way to test the distortion. There is a possibility that one of the lenses have more distortion and this can cause softer clips and photos. It is not a precise method but this is the only way to check the optics without software correction.
Interesting comparison. Nice to see you hook up with Jordan from The Camera Store for this! Firmware updates have been very important to me to have updated my older version lenses to work with the Dual IS ll in my GH5. Woohoo :)
I've seen a nice used Mk 1 going for around £400. This will probably be going on my GX7, another nice find with only 400 shots taken since new (2014). Enough of a saving to buy another 2.8 zoom. I'll mainly be shooting stills.
You have no idea what you're talking about. Olympus built that lens years ago and it turned out like this: www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=546539&gclid=CPiJy7nI7dMCFYJnfgodi2UKRg&is=REG&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&A=details&Q=
Great work guys! I met Jordan, and he's a super nice guy. I hope one day to meet up with you as we're up here just in Vancouver! Keep on with the great content you both!
So you still need to turn off the stabilization on the cameras when on a tripod? Is that for video and photo? Can you damage your camera if you don't turn it off? Love your vids by the way.
Fun With The Bugs no damage and for photos i don't think it will matter. I usually keep it on but you could have some motion in video from ibis moving but usually it's a non issue (in my experience) but it does vary depending on lens or camera.
It could vary depending on Camera Body and Lens of course. But my GX85 with a panasonic 25mm F1.4 lens constantly shifts focus from the subject to the background when on a Tripod with Dual Stabilization On. It has no issues when I turn it off. I've heard this is common for stabilization though because the sensor is expecting to compensate for movement and when there is none it can cause shake when there is none.
The Dual IS 2 vs 1 test was short, I would have liked to see more. Does Dual IS 2 perform better when there is someone closer in the shot to focus the steadiness around? While if you walk and nothing specific is in the middle of the shot then it might not know where to stay put and wobbles around more from side to side? The Nocticron really got a Dual IS 2 firmware update?
I would have appreciated a more in depth comparison. When you noticed that weird "adaptive" behavior of the Mark II during walking, you should have repeated the test to figure out if it was just an anomaly.
Great video as always. Would be interesting to test how the Panasonic 12-35 fares against the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 on the GH5. The stabilization (IBIS vs. Dual IS) and auto focus might be worse on the Olympus but the manual focus feel (non focus by wire) might make up for it.
Hmmmm, I wouldn't want the stabilization to "learn" and therefore change its behaviour. The idea for me about stabilization is to mimic an actual physical stabilizer or rig. But if it changes behaviour then it is harder to get a repeatable result if I am trying to simulate a particular camera move.
Awesome video. I really hope panasonic would start making more interesting lenses, because I feel they've been lagging lately a little bit. 8-18 could be interesting, but both the consumer and leica 12-60 are "meh" (what's the point of introducing 12-60, if the trend for GH5 owners seems to be to go for 12-35 anyway), and these new 12-35 and 35-100 seem more of a price raise than anything else. You know what would really be good lens? A T-S lens, or a 90/100mm macro lens for insect macro. None of the new lenses seem to be too interesting lately.
Hi Guys Love the reviews from both f you! wondering if you were using manual focus here or did you use autofocus for these tests especially the stability test and focus breathing?
Coming from a Sony video shooter thinking of switching, are all of the native lenses for the GH5 focus by wire or do some still offer mechanical focus rings?
Thanks for this video. It helped a lot in making my decision. I notice that the color looks much more natural on version 1 compared to version 2 at 4:05. Can you please confirm this wasn’t any post editing error? Color looked especially off on that one. Did it seem to you that colors look more natural on version 1 while doing this video? Thanks!
Max, Using my GH5 & 12-35 version 2 on a pan head on a tripod (set only to rotate horizontally) to shoot video, should I turn off IS. Also assumes camera is set to manual, auto ISO & continuous auto focus. Thanks.
Thanks for the comparison review Max. Quick question. What camera is the first two shot of you and Jordan? Also, the camera profile settings and lens? This is one of your better looking videos. Again, thanks for your hard work.

Hey max! I know this is an old video but any reason why you prefer the 12-35 vs the olympus 12-40 now that the gh5 has ibis? Is there any reason outside of better stabilization?
Haha Jordan is awesome (the ending). Hey Max, random question - were you feeding the lavs into the same wireless device? If so, what was it? Also, have you peeked at the olympus 12-40? I'd be curious to see how that competes with version 1. Its around the same price and doesn't have the dual IS either.
+The Post Color Blog we had a DR-10L on him with factory mic. Not happy with the sound will do. something else later. No I haven't yet but I don't think it will support dual I.S at all where 12-35 2.8 will do. dual I.S. 1.0 at least.
Also, I may have a dumb question? I' ve read somewhere you can't use OIS only (IBIS can't be set to off when used with IOS lenses). So only option would be IBIS+OIS. Is it true?
When I bought my GH3 with 12-35mm years ago I did a test shoot with image stabilization on and off. It made no difference at all. So my conclusion was that the Power OIS of this V1 lens is worthless. With the new camera bodies that have IBIS, the V1 lens has a new life.
Hi Max, do you have a video comparing no stabilization with the version 1 lens? Additionally, owning the GH4 would you suggest opting for the version 1 or 2. As far as I'm aware, there is no advantage with the GH4 + version 2 because it doesn't support IBS right?
I'm currently using the version two on the gh5. Do you recommend turning e stabilization on or off if I'm using it with the crane? I noticed with it on, it crops in and I loose some of the wideness
Just what I do myself - I keep e-IS off as that can be done in post if needed, but having it on, as you've mentioned, you lose a bit of the lens coverage. It would only make sense if you'd be streaming live and needed that bit of extra stabilization.
Hey Max, Could you do a video teaching us how to manual focus and make things like one person movie, shooting vlogs and shooting architecture with the Gh5, since the autofocus isn't perfect, would be great learning tool for us amateurs.
Finally the video I was waiting for! Thanks so much! edit: I would appreciate if you can elaborate on the stabilization of the v2 lens. does the 'learning how I walked' mean that for each walking shot I have to walk 5 seconds first before the optimal stabilization kicks in?
Hey Max, i got another quick question. When comparing the G85 to the x-t20 as a first camera for all around usage (maybe more focused towards still photography), which one would you suggest, also taking lense selection, quality and price into account? Thanks in advance :)
Hi , I have recently brought the version 2 to go with GH5 , have tested 2 copies & they have been optically inferior to my version 1 copy..though of course the stabilization is much improved , plus zooming without flicker too..There was mention of a update for the older lenses before GH5 release..& I am sure its a software not a hardware thing..but there nothing on the web now to indicate this will/can happen...So I'm stuck & dont want to buy or test in store many lenses until I find a good copy...what to do ???
Max, need ur help. Im choosing between the Olympus 12-40 2.8 vs this one the 12-35 2.8 panasonic. I have a G85. Im interested in video. Which one would be better for me? im really interested in the manual focus hard stops on the Olympus, Im thinking I might get a follow focus with it in the future. But...the panasonic tho...what will I miss out?
DoyJimenez Focus pulling is very hard because on Focus By Wire lenses so if that is important to you, get the Olympus. You will be missing out on faster autofocus and the Dual IS but it depends on your type of shooting. Stills would benefit more from the Panasonic however Video might be better with the Olympus
Max, what are your thoughts on the Canon 17-55mm 2.8, I never see anyone using it, is something wrong with it? It's been my favourite lens on my gh4 for the last two years travelling
+Larry Russell He did! It was just noisy and it was a different brand and recorder. First time doing dual vids like this on our trip so we're looking into how to make it better in the future.
I may in a future video. This camera is different and I rarely shoot log (only if I need the dynamic range) but when I get more experience I may do a video. Already shot quite a bit of Vlog.
Max I have the version 1 and it seems that when I zoom in and out it changes its exposure. That's even when I set the ISO, shutter speed and aperture manually. I've used this lens with the GX7 a few years ago and now with the GH5. Have you noticed this with your copy?
hay Max i got the New 12-35 and i Was Wondering if there was a Firmware update from it or is is up to Date Rite Out of the Box i Can't Find any INFO thanks
Thanks for the video! Could you test the new "smooth transition" when changing the iris in video mode, feature on the new 12-35 lens next time? I was hoping You will compare that aspect two.
Yes Sorry David. I hope there will be another video to show this. Neither Jordan or I zoom as we record so we didn't even think to test it.
7 років тому
So this is about zooming? I thought Panasonic find a way to make the image brighter or darker without steps. I imagined it should look like how it would when you change it with a manual aperture ring, even though you change it on your camera dial. Maybe I misunderstood something. It would have been awesome. But if it's about the zoom, than I don't get it, shouldn't it be even on the whole range if it's a constant f2.8? So what's the improvement than? Thanks!

That clip of the stabilization of the v2 was pretty mind boggling. It seemed very gimbal like.
Agreed!

Great video. It's nice to see Jordan of TCSTV on your video.
Surly they could offer a faster F1.8 or F2 zoom and keep the size manageable. F5.6 Full frame equivalent depth of field is pretty uninspiring...
THIS ^^^ I will be talking about this in my GH5 Review.
A F1.8 24-80mm for under $1500 and I would switchback to MFT
The lx100 had a F1.7-2.8 24-75mm! and that cost $1000 with the camera attached. madness

Really appreciate you sharing these video tests! You'all make it look easy doing these kind of tests, but I know it takes a lot of time. Thanks!! 🎥
Hey Thanks!
the 12-35 ii I bought had the same jitter problems the older lenses had... send it to Panasonic 3 weeks ago.
I didn't see (in the video or comments) any mention of Panasonic's headline claim that it reduces aperture flicker while zooming.
Hey Max. We met at the Panasonic booth today. I was with my wife. Good to meet you.
Hey Sheldon, It was nice to meet you. I hope your enjoying NAB, we certainly are!
The Dual IS 2 vs 1 test was short, I would have liked to see more. Does Dual IS 2 perform better when there is someone closer in the shot to focus the steadiness around? I couldn't stop staring at the blinking emergency lights in the background in the first couple minutes 😱😱😱
Do you notice any difference in iris flicker while zooming? I have the V1 and the flicker is definitely noticeable.
Sorry I wish we checked! I'm sure it should be better. Neither Jordan or I zoom while recording so we didn't even think to test that.
Great video Max. Always enjoy your collaboration with Jordan.
It looks like the older version could be a better choice for both photography and video (sharpness and price wise). Thank you for the review!
Jordan Drake is the man! Who next? Any awesome female perspectives on the GH5?
Really enjoy seeing you guys collab - the camaraderie is great 😊
Max is everywhere collaborating with everyone! The takeover!

Great video Max - your videos always have a nice flow and pace, and each segment is focused and to the point. Keep them coming!

You know what would really be good lens? A T-S lens, or a 90/100mm macro lens for insect macro. None of the new lenses seem to be too interesting lately.
Panasonic say Ver 2 lens motors are more powerful to optimise the IBIS.
Hi Guys Love the reviews from both f you! wondering if you were using manual focus here or did you use autofocus for these tests especially the stability test and focus breathing?
Great video, Max - had exactly that thought since I have the ver. 1 from my GH4 and was wondering about the new one.

Thanks for making this vid, great stuff as always Max!
Max, how do you find the color on GH5. The a6300 ye used to shoot this episode looks really good, compared to the GH5 footage.
Hello! What lens do you use for this video? very sharp.
When I bought my GH3 with 12-35mm years ago I did a test shoot with image stabilization on and off. It made no difference at all. So my conclusion was that the Power OIS of this V1 lens is worthless. With the new camera bodies that have IBIS, the V1 lens has a new life.

Any ideas? Is there any firmware?
Im buying a used one how do i tell btw version 1 or 2 any markings?
Any word on the 35-100mm mark 2? More of the same?
Any chance i get to know which camera+lens combo were you shooting with?
Yea we always have that stuff posted in the video description.
hi max, can you share with us the way you color grade your vlog ?
I may in a future video. This camera is different and I rarely shoot log (only if I need the dynamic range) but when I get more experience I may do a video. Already shot quite a bit of Vlog.
Max I have the version 1 and it seems that when I zoom in and out it changes its exposure. That's even when I set the ISO, shutter speed and aperture manually. I've used this lens with the GX7 a few years ago and now with the GH5. Have you noticed this with your copy?
Butinsho does the same for me, don't know if it's a flaw, bug or something!
which camera and lens did you use to shoot this video?

FRANK R ICE COLD same here
Also v1 looked better. V2 looked less natural imo
Very good informational video
Thanks for the video! Could you test the new "smooth transition" when changing the iris in video mode, feature on the new 12-35 lens next time? I was hoping You will compare that aspect two.
Yes Sorry David. I hope there will be another video to show this. Neither Jordan or I zoom as we record so we didn't even think to test it.
Thanks!
David Skaliczky the issue would be iris flickering while zooming even in manual mode
I see now. Thanks Max and have an awesome NAB experience! ✌
Thanks to TCSTV's livestream, all I can see now are your sausage fingers 😂
Lol. They are not too big actually, but I guess a lot of the journalists have smaller hands.
