I have had both the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 MK I and the Olympus 12-40 and ended up switching to the 12-40 as my main lens. I found the Olympus corner to corner sharpness was overall better than the 12-35 which I noticed on my GH5 had noticeable softer edges at 12mm even stopped down to f/4 and the edge softness was what made me switch as I shoot a lot of landscapes and needed better edge to edge sharpness. Thank you for the video. My wife enjoys taking pictures of waves breaking over rocks so it is very useful in my search. After a lot of searching, the color detail that we like for the waves is the G9 + PL 42.5. It's very difficult to find a wide lens or wide zoom that color matches it. It doesn't really seem like any of these 3 lenses have the color rendering capability but maybe I am wrong or need to settle for less. Thanks for any insights
You mentioned the fly-by-wire focus resetting the focus when you turn the camera off or swap lenses on the GH5. If you are just turning the camera off, the focus will remain the same when you turn the camera off and turn it back on. All you have to do is turn on the "Lens Position Resume" feature. This is found on the "Lens/Others" section of the "c/wrench" menu.
Thank you for the comment. Yes, its true some cameras, like the GH5 have this specific feature, however when you swap batteries out (and I do a lot) it doesn't maintain it. If you remove the battery without powering the camera down, it can even reset the feature in the menu. Also I cannot take them off the camera and place them back while maintaining at least a general focus. Maybe Im old school and just like a good old AF/MF switch on the side of a lens. :)
Awesome video. I have the GH5s and I plan to mount an onboard mic and I am worried about autofocus noises being picked up by the mic. I just sent back the metabones xl adapter for my Canon glass because all of my EF lenses made a huge amount of focus noise that the onboard mic picked it up way too much for my taste. I am planning to use the 12-35 v2 or the Olympus 12-40 on a gimbal or a tripod for Quinceañeras and events like weddings. So, the stabilization in the lens is super nice and would be a nice to have feature but I keep thinking of the best quality video for my productions and the Olympus seems to edge out the Panasonics in this category. Can you provide feedback on the autofocus noise for both lenses. I have also heard that the Panasonic 12-35 v2 has pulsing issues when autofocus is engaged. I don't want or need that. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Trying to get a lens for a used GH4 to get into video cheap. Was leaning Olympus but then I realized that the lens does not have optical stabilization and the GH4 does no either. Looks like I will lean Panasonic 12-35 probably the first gen. Thanks for video.
I sold my Olympus 12-40 to buy the Panasonic 12-35 version I or II (I have a Panasonic G9). I like the smaller size of the Panasonic lenses which is why I like the MFT system to begin with (I realize the G9 is a bigger MFT camera but paired with the Pansonic lenses it is significantly smaller and lighter than a full frame or crop setup). Whether I buy used or new the version II is a couple of hundred dollars more expensive. I don't take a whole lot of video so is the Panasonic version II worth the extra money for a hobbyist stills photographer with a G9 that already has IBIS anyway?
It's also unfortunate that they promised Dual I.S. 2.0 for the V1, but then recanted that statement later on. Probably marketing told the tech department: 'it's marvelous that you guys managed to make V1 Dual I.S. 2.0 compatible... but we've got lenses to sell, so: NO!'. It's a small thing, but I really don't like the old dark purple-ish styling of the V1. :P The new one is supposed to have smoother iris control too. I'd only get it as a kit (with roughly 300 bucks shaved off), at 999 it's definitely not priced where it needs to be.
Is the lack of DFD support on the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 Pro mean that I would be better off buying the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 (regardless of Mark 1 or Mark 2)? Thank you.
Great information!! For our channel we use the GX8 and 12-35 2.8 Version 1, maybe when we upgrade to the GH5, or even GX9 :D we will upgrade to the Version 2, great video as always!! :)
Stupid question, but I can't find this anywhere on the web. I'm going to purchase one of these lenses to use on a gimbal with a follow focus to adjust zoom. I own the Olympus 12-100, and the zoom is too firm to work with my follow focus motor. Is there a noticeable difference in the firmness of the zoom lenses between these two lenses? Is one lens easier to zoom than the other?
I tested both lenses in one day. The Olympus is much better. Those extra 20mm in Panasonic are unhelpful. But quality of photos on olympus is higher. Also I testes modern mirrorless cameras like Lumix S1 and Nikon Z5. Of course, photos from new cameras are more detailed, autofocus is better. But not too much for to pay a lot for updating m4/3 system to something new.
Have you tried using your setup on a Gimbal? Will dual IS counter the gimbal's IS? If so, should I just get the Oly or Panasonic v1 and the gimbal should "future proof" lens or camera body upgrades? Thanks. Enjoyed your review!
I have the 12-35 v1 with gx8 and g85 bodies. Great lens but there have been plenty of times I wished I had an extra 5mm in the long end. I also have the Olympus 40-150 pro and man is the build quality on that lens impressive! I might pick up the Olympus 12-40 one day, but it will have to be when I get rid of the gx8 and upgrade to the gx9 or em5 mk iii because the ibis on my GX8 stinks. The ibis on the g85 is impressive. I can easily hand hold the Olympus pro zoom at 150 and 210mm with mc14 converter at 1/20 of a second.

I currently own the Olympus 12-40mm and OMD EM1 (I'm ready for an upgrade). Two questions for Michael The Maven and anyone else who wants to chime in... 1. Camera wise (I am predominantly a stills photographer), should I pick up the OMD EM1 Mark II or wait for the Pany G9? (I'm really leaning towards the G9 for the 6K photo) 2. If I go with the G9, is it worth picking up the Pany 12-35 v1 or v2...if I'm doing mostly stills? Any suggestions or comments would greatly help. Thank you all in advance.
I own the OMD E-1 Mark ii and just updated the firmware to version 3.0. From a lot of expert's reviews, the 3.0 firmware brings the Mark ii a lot closer to the E-M1X, fast focus and lots of nice upgrades. Now, I need to buy the 12-40mm and I'll be happy!
I always get micro-jitters when using the 12-35ii handheld with the GH5. Also the quality at 12mm for the 12-35ii is not nearly as sharp as the Leica 12mm (At the same apertures). Ever since I got the Leica, I really don't like the 12-35ii and the micro jitters are seriously making me consider switching to the oly 12-40
John Kironde Video autofocus is just as good (or bad) as any other lens. Low light in amazing. OIS makes no difference at this focal length from my use. I don’t miss the extra reach of the 12-35 cause I still own it and use it. The Leica 12mm is not a replacement for that length and each video shoot has different needs. The lowlight of the Leica 12mm is amazing and has made dark video locations possible
I have a G7 and soon to have a GX85. With the Oly, I just couldn't get used to the counter-clockwise direction when zooming in. So this leaves me with the Panny v1 option with my limited budget. Right now B and H has it new on sale for 699.00. But I've still never been able to make up my mind buying it only because I have read several problems with micro-jitter with the lens even with the stabilization turned off. I shoot 3 hours of bowling in 4k on a tripod every week and micro-jitter would ruin the shot. Does anyone have any info and if this problem has ever been solved? I've read that it is limited to certain older serial numbers? Can someone please help me out and leave a few comments? Thank you so much!
I don't think so. While they're fully compatible with each other in terms of autofocus and basic IS, any specialized functions will only work within their native system if I'm not wrong..
The Olympus 12-40 looks great for all around function. It almost had me, but for handheld vlogging I think I would struggle with it more than a stabilized lens. The hardest part about what I am looking for is trying to find a Wide, Fast, and Stable lens (on a GH5) with a long enough mm to create the depth for photography and still be able to vlog with enough speed to handle dark settings while also being able to stabilize when needed. (understanding the in house stabilization). Something about the Lumix 7-14 (which is commonly used on the GH5 by vloggers) bugs me. Distortion, slowness for dark settings, and I can't put my finger on it, but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as say the Olympus 12-40 (could be light amount differences). However, it has it's major strong suits for focus, width, and movement. Anyone else have suggestions for a well balanced lens for both deep looking stills and stable/low light vlog-ability for a GH5 without having to slap on a speedbooster? I know there is no perfect lens, but MAN it's so hard to find that right balance of versatility in one lens for both Stills and moving Video. Great comprehensive video by the way Michael. Easy to watch and very informative.
You did a very comprehensive comparison here; however, you didn’t talk about autofocus performance. I have the Panny version 1 and the Olympus. Normally I shoot video but I have four days of shooting dance competition stills. Which lens would you use? Would you use face detect or area autofocus?
The depth of field does not change. A 50mm focal length [for example] gives the same depth of field regardless of the sensor size. The reason why it's harder to get a shallow depth of field on M4/3 cameras is because we have to use shorter focal lengths to fit everything we want in the frame.
True the lens optics do not change with the format, however the equivalent is effective at what was stated. This is why I say things like "behave like". I kindly suggest you read up on "equivalence" if you are unfamiliar.
Does it make a difference if you're using a focal reducer? I have an old canon FD 50mm f1.4 on my Panasonic G7 with a Roxen adapter/focal reducer. Of course the crop factor is definitely not 2X. I'm guessing it's shooting at around 65-75mm. Do you think that the "equivalent" on depth of field will still be 2X? Seems to me that the depth of field is incredibly shallow.

You mentioned the fly-by-wire focus resetting the focus when you turn the camera off or swap lenses on the GH5. If you are just turning the camera off, the focus will remain the same when you turn the camera off and turn it back on. All you have to do is turn on the "Lens Position Resume" feature. I’m about to buy a G85 and also trying to decide between these two lenses. Keen to hear any advice. Cheers
I need a more in depth video with all the following modes tested before Ill buy one, not just static videos of leaves that don't have to refocus on anything else
Laurențiu Derecichei while lenses are occasionally to blame, what you are describing is more the responsibility of the camera itself and those tests have also already been published under my Epic Shootouts. See “Gh5 vs Omd EM1ii Epic Shootout” thanks
Thanks Michael. I have been watching comparison videos for those lenses for the last few days. You have made up my mind. The Olympus 12-40 will be my choice. Great video.

(I'm really leaning towards the G9 for the 6K photo)
Very interesting !
+jeffhalebopp I have not seen this unfortunately I won't be able to recommend anything it works fine on both my GH4 & GH5
TKS FOR THE CONTENT!
Great vid. Cheers
I really Like v2 of my Pan 12-35mm, works perfectly with the GH5, cant wait for a firmware update to fix the jitter/softness that I have noticed.
V2 is insane on the GH5! Total worth it!
DFD with the Olympus?
Dual IS with Olympus?
I don't think so. While they're fully compatible with each other in terms of autofocus and basic IS, any specialized functions will only work within their native system if I'm not wrong..
Add Olympus 12-45 F4.0!
12-40mm Fragile base body
PANASONIC MFT 12MM F/1.4 LEICA DG SUMMILUX ?
Which is easier to manual focus is what I would like to know. Thinking about getting one for a Zcam E2 with and without a follow focus.
You did a very comprehensive comparison here; however, you didn’t talk about autofocus performance. I have the Panny version 1 and the Olympus. Normally I shoot video but I have four days of shooting dance competition stills. Which lens would you use? Would you use face detect or area autofocus?
Is that Maui?
?? WHAT Do you mean You Prefer the Olympus 12-40mm """" IF YOUR ON STICKS ??""""ON STICKS??"""" Is that a Term Everyone is Suppose to Know??" THANK YOU Michael,
ChevyPowerToGo - sticks = Tripod
ChevyPowerToGo - it’s camera slang -:)
OHHHHHH :- Thank You mICHAEL :-) ..ALSO You were leading to eerilyer that you Almost don't need the Tripod with Todays 2018 Advanced IBIS both Pany & Especially Olympus RIGHT :-) and Also AGREE With you Big Tme on Best Out of the 3 Lenes Olympus 12-40mm :-) hands Down,
grat video :) but 2,8 on 4/3 = 5,6 on FF ... no way, not true ... :) ... you can say only this - DOF on FF on 2,8 = 2xDOF on 4/3 2,8 ... for simple example 1cm front/1cm back is 2cm front/2cm back ... :)
I think, each have its own benefit. Just pick which one is match to our purpose.
Kam3! Thanks for the review, very good information
All You need is 12 40 Leica 2.8 my man
It's a good lens but way overpriced, the claimed idea with m4/3rd lenses is they cost cost less to make than apsc or ff lenses, but in reality they cost almost the same
Just changed my video setup from camcorder to DSLR GH4. Now finding that lenses are super expensive. It broke my budget just to get the camera body. Need the 12-35/F2.8 for my video. Anyone willing to donate one??
Should have got Panasonic fz2500 if you were coming from camcorder..
@@Jphizzle96 I will check it out. THank you
Darn. Now back to square one
@@Jphizzle96 found out that the fz does not have interchangeable lenses. And the aperture changes as you zoom in.
OLYMPUS with IS will be the king
JOHN CENA
m4/3 system is TOTAL garbage. Overpriced, shitty lenses for HUGE price. You can buy 3 canon lenses for the same price.
