Santisima Trinidad - The Making Of

- The making of the model ship Santisima Trinidad.
The scale of the model is 1:90 and it belongs at the OcCre series. The time I needed to make this model was approximately 8 and a half months with hundreds of working hours. The cost was approximately 550 euros (without the display case). The varnish is gloss by choice because it "brings out" the wood, it's more easy to clean, you cannot have any white spots and it looks better. You can see this as my trademark! To answer a typical question, yes it will probably float ,but you will never put it in water. Also the vertical sail of the stern is placed this way because if i placed it with the lines vertical it wouldn't fit. This video comes in 4K and has 2 sequential parts, the 1st part is a photo montage (consist of more than 1000 photos) of every step of the making and the 2nd part is a plain video showing the finished model.
The music tracks in this video with the order of playing are :
Habanera, Les Toreadors from Carmen ,Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart and 1812 Overture by Tchaikosvky.

I have followed every episode of your build John and I find the finished model very impressive. Great job!
Thank you very much!!! I hope to see you again in my next project!
Fantastic! I’m a bird carver for thirty years but watching you, you have changed my mind and I will be building ships soon! The beauty of the ship when done has convince me that this was going to be my new hobby!
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! Definitely you are welcome to the world of wooden model ships! If you'll need any help feel free to ask me and you can join me in my current project : ua-cam.com/play/PLmoS1cmOImghrqdw_3jR2o0BSrS-tcaBm.html
What a treat to see her finished. Those shots where we see the entire finished ship are breathtaking. Fine work and very entertaining to follow. Cheers.
Thank you very much for your kind words Bob!!!
I don't believe this video has only 600 likes. Good job!
Thank you very much!!! Give it some time :)
Enjoyed watching it all happen....and the nice segment showing the building brought it all pleasantly back. Wonderful work, John. True craftmanship. Awaiting the next. Thank you!!!
Thank you very much for your kind word Michael!!! See you again with the next one!!!
John, my deepest respect for your wonderful work.
I could never, absolutely never build such a ship. 👍
Thank you very much Daniel!!! You should never say never, or at least before you are convinced of your skills it would be good if you were able to see my first ever wooden model, it was a disaster!!!
@@JohnsWoodenShips I'd love to see your first-ever model. I would also like some advice on where to begin. I've completed my first small, plastic wee boat, but I'd like to progress slowly but surely. What was your journey like, please?
@@Mr1drew I feel like i am being interviewed :) My first ever wooden ship has been given away as a gift (i made someone happy) because i couldn't stand to look all the mistakes. And i could see them all. Fortunately only a few pictures are saved from that disaster. Then my 2nd one was better but still it was pretty bad. I made someone happy again :) The 3rd one is still with me in my collection and it's the HMS Pandora. A lot of mistakes there too but the result was acceptable. It's a big journey of 20 years so i cannot talk about it in a few lines. My best ever, Santa Ana. My 2nd best? I am building it right now and it's Montanes.
You're a wizard. This work cannot be done in one life! Absolute homage.
Thank you very much!!! It took me almost 8,5 months :)
Love it cant wait to see whats next
Thank you very much!!! You will see, it might take a while because of the virus situation but it's going to be good!
John what a build, she is really beautiful. You did a fine job and it shows. Great music with this video very much enjoyed this . Thank you so much for taking the time to film all of this build. Patience well beyond what I could have done with all the filming and editing involved. Keep up the good work my friend.
Thank you very much for being with me all these months. I really appreciate it!!!
Bravo mister John buen Recopilaccion
Thank you very much for your kind words Alfredo!!!
Just beautiful! And a great experience watching every step so well documented. Thanks so much for that.
Thank you very much for watching!!!
It has been a pleasure watching this model come together. Thank you for all of the hard work putting this up on video to share it with us. Can't wait to see what's next. Stay healthy.
Thank you very much!!! This is the word "Stay healthy", i hope we all get through this virus situation healthy!
Hello John Ijust finished the Santisima Trinidad that i made thanks to your videos i speak french but with the visual details i undertood a big thank you. Conside makind the SOLEIL ROYAL De Agostini i fing its a beautiful french boat . From Quebec Canada
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! I am glad that i was able to help :)
Brilliant, I love the Santísima Trinidad. Such a beautiful ship.
I am glad that you like her, thank you!!!
John you’re incredible and your workmanship is far superior than any other builders I’ve seen. I wrote in an earlier reponse that you inspired me to start my mantua HMS victory which I did 2 days ago. I’ll follow this build for all helpful tips and tricks. The only thing I’ll do different is a semi gloss or satin finish as that’s just my preferences. Again thanks for doing this build step by step to assist other builders.
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! Definitely your are going to use the varnish that makes you happy, after all that's the idea, make a model that YOU are going to like! :)
Thank you for taking us on this wonderful journey, John. I have been following your build since the unboxing. You have built a beautiful model and should be proud. I hope you take us with you on your next build the same way. -Ted
Thank you very much Ted!!! I am going to build another one but since it will come from Spain it's going to take a while because of the virus situation. But finally i hope that we all stay healthy and have fun with the next one!
Thank you John ! I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos ,and picked up many helpful instructional tips..
Glad it was helpful Malcom!!! :)

Great video! That particular recording of the 1812 overture did my head in though.
I am glad that you liked it!!! Classic music it the appropriate music for these models :)
Very beautiful build. I binge watched all 78 parts. You gave me a lot of great information for the ship I'm building now. (Blue Shadow) and a gun port. Look forward to your next adventure.

Thank you very much George for being with me all this months!!! I'll be happy to have to again with me with the next one!
Preciosa embarcación. Felicitaciones.
Thank you very much!!!
very beautiful, and very good explanation.
Thank you very much!!!
I have been binge watching this build, absolutely magnificent! Been doing quite a few years of plastic modeling now, mainly armour and ww2 airplanes, but the challenge has gone. Still like it, but a bit less these days. Becoming to easy, sounds weird but I just make model after model, and place them in my display cabinet and that’s it, next.
After watching you building the Santisima, I just might have to try a wooden modelship. Not this one, obviously, because that is one complex design requiring years of experience. But something simple with one mast. Already have a lot of tools, so the investment will not be that big.
Thank you for posting all these steps, currently watching you building your latest model. A joy to watch!
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! I should recommend to start with this one : www.occre.com/model-ship/ships/albatros.html it is simple enough to begin with without being too simple. Have 2 things in mind 1) you have to make mistakes to learn and 2) wood does forgive mistakes :)
@@JohnsWoodenShips Thank you John. Found the model in stock at a shop in a town near me. Ordered it for pickup this weekend. Let’s see how it goes 😀
@@mike74em Glad that i was able to help :) You will enjoy this :)
Hello. Excellent work. I still haven't managed to finish my boat. A hug. Hugo.
Thank you very much Hugo!!! You will and it would be great!
Que gran trabajo. Felicitaciones bro!!
Thank you very much!!!
A true work of art John! I've watched this video so many times, always amazes me. Hopefully mine can come out half as well 😀
You can do it Greg, you need to have patients and to imagine what it should look like before you make every piece!!!
Think this was a fantastic series, loved every minute and can't wait to get my own model. I have the Albatros to complete which I am up to the masts and yards stage and then HM Bough Endeavor then HMS Bounty. Think I should be busy for the next few years. I will be back to review all the stages of your build to make sure I do the right thing. Thank you very much for your efforts and filming.
I am glad that you liked it Peter!!! You will enjoy your models, i am pretty sure about that. If you'll need any help do not hesitate to ask me :) And i would recommend to take your time and watch the current series "Montanes", it's a very good one :)
Genial, espectacular barco
Thank you very much!!!
Xapooo. He disfrutado mucho viéndolo..🤙🏼⚓️🌊🌬

Thank you very much!!!
Que dire, il est magnifique, bravo, pour cette patience, et cette détermination.... francois. 😊
Thank you very much for your kind words ☺️
excellent job
Thank you very much!!!
Most underrated channel on UA-cam by far, people sleeping on this way too much
I hope that some day people will start watching videos like this one. It is a very difficult build, it requires a lot of experience, a lot patience and too much time.
Que maravilla. Increíble
Thank you very much!!!
Looks amazing! I am currently working a model of the USS Constitution and the instructions are incredibly vague, almost of no help, and I’m knew to ship building so your videos help me out a lot! Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much!!! I am glad that i was able to help!
Muchas felicidades John, me parece una maqueta preciosa y de una ejecución impecable .Espero llegar algún día a realizar una maqueta tan grandiosa.
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! You will make one your self if :)
Luce estupendo 👍
Thank you very much!!!
What stunning attention to detail, wonderful video, please do a Cutty Sark build.
Thank you very much Gary!!! Maybe in the future :)
Wow; she's beautiful!!!
Thank you very much!!!
Good choice of music at the beginning for a Spanish ship-of-the-line. Nice build, done to *your* preferences. As it should be.
@@spikespa5208 Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
excellent model 👍👍👍
Many thanks!
Bravissimo!
Thank you very much Bill!!!
You did it my friend !!! I congratulate you. I envy you. Unfortunately, I don’t have time for my favorite hobby.
Congratulations!
Thank you very much my friend!!!
Brilliant 👍👍

Just beautiful. Amazing work. I would like to see a photo of its final display position.
Thank you very much George!!! You can see it here : ua-cam.com/video/0PMzbRz6G-4/v-deo.html
Respect!
Thank you very much!!!
Looks to be quite an undertaking.
It's very beautiful!
GREAT MUSIC.
Thank you very much Bill, i was searching for the music tracks about 2 months.
Maestro.
Thank you very much!!!
This looks very nice because you can see that valuable wood was used. Many hobbyists coat their models with paint so that you can no longer see the wood grain. This is not so good because one doesn't know if it's made out of wood or plastic.
If you like this one then you have to check out Santa Ana, she is magnificent!!! ua-cam.com/video/nNmNqme4oAI/v-deo.html
Eccellente lavoro!
Thank you very much!!!
Great job, i just got the mercedes in mail, almost done with the albatros
Thank you very much!!! I wish i had another one to make right now.
Hello John! Could you tell me what wood filler are you using for the first planking? I am trying to complete a model from Corel .
Hi Peter, just common water based wood filer is 4 different colors according the wood color. It's a Greek product so there is no point of telling you the brand.
Well done John! It looks amazing! Quite a job! But, let me tell you, I think it would be prettier if you did rolled ship sails, cause the sails hide the pretty job that you have done with ropes and masts. That’s my opinion, but the piece it’s yours and the merit goes to you. Congratulations for one more ship in your portfolio. 🏆
Thank you very much my friend!!! I like it better with the sails open ,i believe it makes the model more beautiful.
John !
S U P E R RRRRrrrrrrr .....Rrr !!!!!
Super Gut ,bravisimo !!!!!
Thank you very much!!! :)
Very nice
Thank you very much!!!
great experience during this 8 months
Thank you very much for being with me!!!
Great work, stunning. Very nicely built. I noticed it is single planking What do you think about it? better or worse than double planking?
Thank you very much Nils!!! It's better with a single planking, you can make better the curves but you need experience and until you have it you work on 2 rows of planking.
Spectacular job John! I have watched from the beginning and I am jealous of your skills and patience. Can't wait for the start of the next ship and "school" is back in session. I start the Occre king of the Mississippi in a couple of months. Any advise? I see a number of modelers have put low voltage LED lights in them. I really like the look, but don't know where to begin. Congrats on a great addition to your collection.
Thank you very much Dave for your kind words!!! I do not like to put light in the models, i do like to put light in their display case. The King of Mississippi is an easy model, the keel is prefixed and you have to cover it with wood strips, at least that's how it was from Artesania Latina. I do not remember something particular about this model, but if you'll need any help do not hesitate to ask me!
日本人だから英語分からないけど最後までみました!かっこいいです!
I hope that you liked it!
Hi John, The result is much than impressive ! I learnt a lot too! One question: you mentioned a 8 mounths or plus. Does it means full Time? Could you share with us an idea in hours for such a big ship.
Once again, all my congratulations for this wonder.
Thank you very much! It's hard to calculate the hours, for about 5 months i was working each day for about 4-5 hours. For the rest of the period i was working 1-2 hours each day and on weekends and holidays at least 8 hours each day.
Just finnished the golden hind in the same range did you steam bend the board on the hull ? Took me 3 months to Finnish rigging 3 full days alone
I use a soldering iron to bend the wood strips.
The first few seconds I thought oh my god! A lot of bits!
What a beautiful build. True craftsmanship
Are you going to add radio control?
Only joking!
Thank you very much!!! It was a difficult one, but not as difficult as Santa Ana :)
Συγχαρητήρια!
Σε ευχαριστω πολυ!!!
Wonderful John. Now it’s time for Carmen, A Little Night Music and last but not least, the 1812 Overture.
What’s next?
Thank you very much!!! I believe that i must use "Ode to joy" as well in my next one!
Sublime ! Grandiose. Very good job. How many times for this ? 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much!!! What do you mean with the "how many times for this?"
This is an awesome pice of art! I'm wanting to build one of this models. Can you recommend a less complicate one? May be an intermediate one, cause I have some experience in other types of models. But none in ships. Thanks in advance!
Thank you very much!!! This is a good model to start with : www.occre.com/model-ship/albatros.html
Or if you want a little more difficult you can go to this : www.occre.com/model-ship/essex.html
@@JohnsWoodenShips thank you for your promptly respond!
Excellent work! Shouldn’t there be four guns/cannons in the aft? Best regards!
Thank you very much! I really don't know, all the cannons have been installed according to the plans.
May i ask what kind of varnish do you use?
I use gloss varnish for yachts and as an undercoat i use Nitro wood sealer.
Bella
Thank you very much!
John how many hours a day on average did you work?
On weekends and days off 6-8 hours, on working days maximum 1 hour or none at all.
I have built " casa blanca " out of thick cardboard big sail ship, about 24"long, 8"wide and21"height, it was there with me for about 8 years, now I have built a passenger ship of card board exactly like konkanshakti used for Mumbai Goa ferry, that too about 18" long, 6"wide and 10" high. I am interested in ship modelling, but here we dont get readymade cut sizes ply board. I get more fun in making ships according to my idea and measurement. Thanks for the ship model post in which I am more interested.
I am glad that i was able to help :)
