I know I'm 4 months late finding this but what a fabulous, informative podcast
I had the pleasure of shooting with Mike at a field archery shoot MANY years ago. He's a gent! I learned a lot that day. Outdoor v indoors: Apart from weather, I think the main differences are: (1) a small percentage change in velocity indoors doesn't change the trajectory much, but it does outdoors!; and (2) the aiming angles and therefore body posture are different.
This is a useful conversation from which you could get some insight into the Illusive side of recurve archery.
Quick comment for the engagement counter and UA-cam to be more happy about the video.
Thanks for doing this, always a pleasure to watch.
Appreciate it!
Thanks for an informative video. I’ve just come back to archery at the age of 80+ and the comment of Michael Peart that a lay off of 5 years plays havoc with your form/ muscle memory is no exaggeration. I’ve dropped down from 36lbs to 30lbs just to try to regain form once more. Hopefully I’ll regain my strength and fitness to once again to become competitive and hopefully show that technique trumps power/ youth😎
Please, do more of these. Both this interview and one with Tom Hall are so insightful and thought provoking, and touch the topics that would never come up in regular tutrorials. Great stuff. Thanks.
Enjoy your videos, demeanor and thoughts. Thank you.
Ashe, AMAZING video.
As other person said, you go through the anchor, not to anchor! Dynamic shooting!! Key takeaway!!!!
Excellent insight from two shooters /coaches.
Thank you for watching
Thanks for the video Ashe! I like this type of content
I think the big difference between indoor and outdoor is the fact that the arrow decelerates outdoors. Indoors, there's very little change in arrow speed over the course of the shot. Outdoors, there very much is. A weak shot may result in a few fps reduction in speed indoors, but tens of feet per second outdoors by the end of the arrow's flight. "Super-aiming" generally means a long hold and a loss of tension that will be punished heavily by distance. All of that is before you consider weather.
Sooo insightful and great content! Thanks for the introduction to Mike : ) "Stop aiming" - one of the best pieces of advice in my opinion, but so hard to articulate.
I’m pleased you liked it 👍🏻
It was great to hear words of wisdom... so often we are disciplined to focus on form and process, and whilst they are fundamental, the real challenge, particularly for recurve, is how we aim (or not!) and then overcome the anxiety of not aiming (target panic)! There are not many who are willing to tackle the challenge from a coaching perspective as it's so subjective and personal, so thank you... Zen and the Art of Archery is the best I've come across and that was written in the 1930s!
Very interesting. Many thanks! :o)
What a fantastic interview. Really great insights.
I also noticed that the bow is more forgiving with more weight. When I shot 50 lbs, a bad release doesn't have anywhere near the impact it does at 40-42 lbs. I'll have to go back to heavier weight limbs for a while and see if I can work up to it.
Any chance you can get more archers for interviews like this? More than enough great ones over there in the UK.
Thanks! I've got more planned in the pipeline :) Keep your eyes peeled 👀
Just a few of the things I got here:
Dynamic shooting!
Big aperture can be useful for getting away from over aiming/holding.
Anchor is something you go THROUGH not TO.
18m isn’t 70m! Too true!
They are the key points 👍🏻 thanks for watching
My distances were the opposite, I kicked ass at 90m, 290 to 300 normally, but then 30m was usually 327... Damn strange sport
That is strange. Very interesting.
