"Town Without Pity", "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "Only Love Can Break A Heart" are others by Gene Pitney. Glad that you're exploring his music.
Gene Pitney's voice was unique, instantly recognizable. He was an instrumentalist in the studio, altho I've never seen him with instruments when performing. He wrote some of his own songs, borrowed some, and wrote for others. He wrote "Hello Mary Lou" for Ricky Nelson. His version of "If Hurts to Be In Love" became the released (and hit) pop version, because Neil Sedaka's version was recorded at the "wrong" studio (some kind of contract technicality). And he did the title song for the movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," but in another bureaucratic snag of some kind it wasn't included in the film. Anyway, he's got a big catalog out there, mostly in English and some Italian. Fave fun.
For me, the Marc Almond duet is the far superior version. Marc is a vastly underrated artist. As well as his amazing work with Soft Cell, he has had a stellar solo career. Try 'The Days of Pearly Spencer' - a big hit for him in 1992 that is also a 60's cover version.
It's not a superior version. It's a different version. There's also 21 years between the recordings with all that implies in recording techniques. Whilst Marc Almond does a good job with the song, I think it's been a little over-engineered. Imagine how it would have sounded if 1988 was the first time Gene Pitney recorded it!
Gene’s voice and range was off the charts. He goes straight to my heart. Wonderful duet also, Marc did it justice. My guess is, he was in awe at the sharing the stage with this legend. Love them both.
I absolutely love Gene Pitney! I’m currently reading a book about his songs, written by David McGrath. I can’t get enough of his voice and I love so many songs that he did! The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was my favorite song when I was 6, which sadly was around the time that he passed away. In high school I rediscovered his music and absolutely fell in love with every song I heard. I love his versions of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Unchained Melody, and Cara Mia. I also love his work in Italian and Spanish. He also did a country album with George Jones and it’s so wonderful. He has such a great range and is amazing in many different genres. Some of my favorites are A Street Called Hope, Country Dancing, I Wanna Love My Life Away, and of course The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. He has so many underrated songs that many people don’t know about, he made so much music! It makes me so happy to hear that you prefer the original! I do as well, while still appreciating the phenomenal version with Marc Almond. I think Street Called Hope might be another great song to react to as well, there’s a great video of him singing it on UA-cam!
Marc Almond is so underrated. More from him: The desperate hours, Tears run rings, Only the moment, The days of pearly Spencer, Waifs and strays, My hand over my heart and for pride week: A lover spurned...
So funny when you realise young people of today haven’t heard of the mighty Gene Pitney! He was so famous (my era) and did so many fabulous heart-moving songs! Tragic how he died so young and so suddenly after a concert.
I second that request ! .. Gene Pitney is a legend, with a phenomenal voice .. Almost any of his hits would be great to react to, and there are MANY to pick from.
I am 50 years old and have loved this song all my will to the day I die I love mark almond he is from my home town Leeds but gene Pitney is on a different level
I always loved and appreciated Gene Pitney from a very young age, even when it was not considered particularly cool during the times of music snobbery. It is so good to see other generations starting to appreciate him for what he was, a unique voice in his time. What can I say, I was never a follower of trends and just knew what I liked and committed to it :) I was so surprised all those years later when Marc Almond did a duet with Gene and I was very pleased as it brought it to a new generation. It was also part of a planned comeback by Gene but sadly health problems interevened and he died not long after. I have to be honest yes I did like Marc but I would just wait for Gene to come on with baited breath. :)
LOVE Marc Almond please do more of his work - so many Jacky, The Desperate Hours, The Stars We Are, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Torch, - thank you for honouring his talent
One of the best singers of the 60s Gene Pitney other track worth checking out include 24hrs from Tulsa, Town without pity and I'm going to be strong. And although he never had a number one in the UK he did have 21 top 40 hits singles 10 of which the top 10.
Gene Pitney was very popular in the UK and always toured in the UK and it was while touring the UK he died from a heart attack in his hotel room in Wales. He had a great voice. The Duet version spent 4 weeks at number 1 in the UK
Wow, thanks so much Dereck! Gene is so underrated, too bad, and this song is so mesmerizing. I discovered it when I heard Herbert Loéonard's awesome French cover in 1968. Love Pitney's ton of voice and especially when he sings in falsetto as in "Every breath I take" my fav by him. My others loved tracks are two sad songs "Somewhere in the country" and "Backstage, I'm lonely". And of course impossible not to mention "24 hours from Tulsa" covered crazily by Dusty Springfield
Am so glad you did a double react to this. The original is my favourite. Please do some more Gene Pitney. Sadly died way too young. Great reaction #Dereck
This is the kind of song that you don’t hear for years and forget how incredibly good it is. Pitney’s voice is very special. Marc also did a cover of a song called The Days Of Pearly Spencer which is a riot. I also hope you find some time for Scott Walker/Walker Brothers, genius of a man.
Marc Almond is so underrated as an artist. I will definitely recommend a few of his other songs, some with his former group Soft Cell and some as a solo artist. Soft Cell: 1) Tainted Love 2) Bedsitter 3) Purple Zone together with the Pet Shop boys. Marc Almond solo i) The Days of Pearly Spencer ii) Jacky iii) Vaudeville and Burlesque
Thanks to my dad for listening to oldies when I was growing up i was able to listen to this kind of music. Oldies is my favorite genre of music. It is nice to see different ages and types of people reactions enjoying these wonderful songs of the days.
I lived smack bang in the middle of the two of them, mum introduced me to Gene Pitney; I grew up in the time of mark so listening to the two of them doing this song was heaven on earth to me at the time!
Being a massive Marc Almond fan since his Soft Cell days, I first liked his solo version better. Then this version started to grow on me and I checked out some of Gene's earlier stuff. Brilliant! Thanks for a great reaction!
You know that is what I love about the newer version it made many check out Gene Pitney, someone who was truly underrated due to the emergenceof rock. Always been a fan and so thankful others have discovered him. A whole new audience.
In March the 6. 1989 it was the number one Hit and on this day my pesonal present was delivered 🥰 my son was born Just in the morning ❤ thank you for your Work ❤
Merci Dereck.. Magnifique. merci ... Pitney est vraiment celui qui m'a fait découvrir cette merveille A quand du Jonnhy CASH , je suis surpris qu'il n'y est pas de demandes...
I like the duet best for a strange reason. When Marc is singing the intro, I am waiting (not too patiently) for Gene Pitney to come in and when he does -wow!
I love Days of Pearly Spencer by Davd McWilliams .. Didn't know it had been covered .. Wil go and check out the Marc Almond version .. Thanks for the tip.
My favourite Gene Pitney song ! .. Just ahead of Yesterday's Hero and It Hurts To Be In Love .. Cyndi Lauper did a very nice cover of it when she was with Blue Angel ( co-incidentally, also the name of a Gene Pitney song ), prior to going solo .. Cheers, Wayne
So fun! I’m glad you like it, Derrick! This has become a favourite for me after hearing it in the movie, The Lobster. It seems utterly cheesy, but so good. I think I have new appreciation for the original after taking time to listen to it here
Delve into Marc! You’re a PSB fan so Ty Purple zone with them as a start and then discover what else Marc has in store… you like Brel? You like Marc….a huge vault of gems will open. Simply he is one of the best artists ever!
my favourite Pitney song is.....Looking Thru the Eyes of Love.... sadly Gene died in 2006 after completing a concert in Cardiff my home city, i believe he died peacefully in his sleep in a hotel near the city......PS 24 Hours from Tulsa ... is probably his best or at least his most well known song ....a great story song
Marc Almond sings live " Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart " in the CD "12 Years Of Tears"'. The concert has been recorded live at The Royal Albert Hall. For the ones who want to discover Marc Almond , I suggest " The Stars We Are " and " Stories Of Johnny ".
Marc Almond is underrated but absolutely amazing. The album this song is on ( the stars we are) is one of the best albums I own. So good. There actually is a solo version on the album, and I like it much better than the duet, which from what I understand was recorded after GenePitney heard Marc’s version.
Oh I love this song! Both versions are great, but the voices of Gene and Mark together at the end, it gets me every time ☺️ I think you might like 24 hours from Tulsa by Gene Pitney as well!
You picked a good one here. I love Gene Pitney and you picked a good one there. That live solo live performance doesn't do him any respect - you miss out on the natural 'twang' he has in his voice, very unique and very Gene. I love the duet version, and if you listen to it without no video, you can instantly hear that voice of his when it kicks in - it could be no other! You should check out some of his other tracks for sure.
This was shown on MTV so often in 1989 that they would've shown it twice at the same time if only they could have! I've never been a fan of Pitney's voice or the stiff staccato style he sings with on this track, but when paired up with the much more vocally gifted Almond, the two of them create magic together. Their voices blend beautifully, and for me, that's why the 1988 version has the edge over Pitney's solo version. On a side note, I was 12 when this video came out and I thought Pitney looked about 80 years old. I couldn't understand why the cool Almond would drag this pensioner into his video! But Pitney was only about 48 at the time! 😂
For me Pitney's original version is better. I like the double reaction format. :-) I would recommend "Rent" by the Pet Shop Boys. First their original song and then the cover by Liza Minelli which was produced by the PSB.
I have this single Some gotton hold of my heart He had a very strong voice I also have the newer one in the 80's with Marc Almond and Gene Pitney. Gene Pitney died in 2006.
Pitney looked a child in that old video. His voice sounding so young and different from other songs he did. His voice should sound deeper, he sings like a baritone/bass in other songs.
Very respectable version. Mr. Almond is to be commended for selecting a Pitney song, then actually performing the song with Gene. Having said that, an examination of Mr. Pitney's discography will reveal a power and a range that Mr. Almond could never hope to achieve.
Pitney's 3-octave range could reach Roy Orbison's top notes. A favorite of mine is his "Only Love Can Break a Heart" on UA-cam search --> "Gene Pitney -- Only Love Can Break a Heart" For something very different you could get back to the French girls :-) For instance, Barbara Pravi. She has a very good catalogue of work and goes full story telling Chanteuse w/piano+ guitar accomp. on a cover of Bigflo & Oli's "Dommage" UA-cam search --> "Barbara Pravi "Dommage" reprise Bigflo & Oli"
Please react to "The Golden boy ", by Freddie mercury and Montserrat Caballe. You promised to do this one after the other 2 songs by them that you reacted to.
Great song. Pitney has a unique voice and does a great job on the original. I like Marc Almond's version too. Not sure I like the duet as much. Such a dramatic song.
For those of broad mind and not easily offended, look up Lard's Walbum Varchive version of this from Mark and Lard on Radio 1. I don't think I've ever laughed so much!

My all time favorite song . Genes voice was out of this is world
Please do a double reaction of The Moody blues - Nights in White Satin & Sandra's cover version
One of the best singers of the 60s Gene Pitney other track worth checking out include 24hrs from Tulsa, Town without pity and I'm going to be strong. And although he never had a number one in the UK he did have 21 top 40 hits singles 10 of which the top 10.
Love Town without Pity. A big Gene Pitney fan overall.
I love Gene Pitney's music! I would recommend Every Breath I Take, Tower - Tall, Mecca, Town Without Pity, Half Heaven - Half Heartache.
OMG !!! One of my favourite songs ❤️❤️

Oh, have you heard Soft Cell’s Say Hello Wave Goodbye yet? Hint hint…😉
I do prefer the cover from ´88 however I’m glad that Marc Almond got Gene P. for this. So good you did the reaction to both versions.
Didn't know this one, loove it !!
I like the duet best for a strange reason. When Marc is singing the intro, I am waiting (not too patiently) for Gene Pitney to come in and when he does -wow!
Another great double reaction suggestion: David McWilliams - The days of Pearly Spencer & Marc Almond - The days of Pearly Spencer
I love Days of Pearly Spencer by Davd McWilliams .. Didn't know it had been covered .. Wil go and check out the Marc Almond version .. Thanks for the tip.
This duet is amazing love it
Ive listened to that song since 1st grade and its always different and unique
Adore Gene. Adore!! I'm Gonna be Strong is a total meltdown, Do it, please.
I was born in the 70s grew up in the 80s and loved the 6os and the 89s but wished I was there in the 60s what a time to be around x

Aha ! Remember both versions well !!
This wasn't released in the US as producers thought it seemed too much like a love song between two men!!
Marc Almond sings live " Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart " in the CD "12 Years Of Tears"'. The concert has been recorded live at The Royal Albert Hall.

Gene Pitney and dusty Springfield did a song called 24 hours from Tulsa.
React to Barry Ryan please. He was on at the Beat Club too. He has recently passed. He was such a dish with a fab voice!
Yes ! .. Eloise is one of the greatest songs ever ! .. Should be reacted to heaps more .. Wayne
I have this single Some gotton hold of my heart He had a very strong voice I also have the newer one in the 80's with Marc Almond and Gene Pitney. Gene Pitney died in 2006.

Genial song...One of the best ever
Grande,adoro..Gene nel ♡
Pitney's 3-octave range could reach Roy Orbison's top notes. A favorite of mine is his "Only Love Can Break a Heart"
on UA-cam search --> "Gene Pitney -- Only Love Can Break a Heart"
For something very different you could get back to the French girls :-) For instance, Barbara Pravi. She
has a very good catalogue of work and goes full story telling Chanteuse w/piano+ guitar accomp. on a cover of
Bigflo & Oli's "Dommage" UA-cam search --> "Barbara Pravi "Dommage" reprise Bigflo & Oli"

Please do a double reaction to Blackberry Way, original from the Move and a cover version from Gotthard
You must listen to « corsica » by Petru Guelfucci !!
Both of these guys should have had alot bigger music careers.
Marc most well known for soft cell, that was too explicit for the overly conservative US.
Yes it was a collaboration between Marc & Gene.
For the record, no one was well versed with the original, it was grossly under rated. Just before gene died he thanked marc with all his heart for allowing his tune to recognised and felt by people
Try, "I'm Gonna Be Strong"
Try Jacky from Marc Almond I didn't see any reactions from anybody.
Do you react to actor has singer ? We know jackie chan actor. He is singer too. Most popular song is "Endless Love" the ending of movie "the myth".
Strange you didn't remember Marc's "surname"...
