Hi Dennis. I just finished servicing my childhood Heddon 220R thanks to you. One interesting thing was that my gear on the shaft had a lip on it which prevented me from removing the gear and pin. (Ugg!) I still was able to clean out all of the dried grease and add new oil and grease throughout. Thanks a billion. Will watch your video on the Garcia 302 soon. I have one of those that needs cleaning as well. Hope you get to go out and do some fishing!

I have a Heddon split bamboo fly rod my Dad bought when he was a Junior in high school in 1937. I still occasionally fish with it.

Another great tutorial, Dennis. l have so many Heddon spinners from the 1960s and 1970s l've been labeled "Heddon-istic" and called a "Heddo-file", lol. No kidding, l have at least 20 models from the tiny 215 up to the huge 242. My favorites are the 233, 248, and 277. The 233 is a small reel about the same size as a Mitchell 308 but a bit heavier. The 248 is larger than a Mitchell 300 but nowhere near as big as a Mitchell 306. The 277 is about the same size as a 306. I gave my brother-in-law a Heddon 277 last summer when he went surf fishing in the Gulf. Back a couple years ago if you were patient an unfished Heddon spinner with box and paper could be had on Ebay for 20 bucks or less plus shipping. An old vintage 1971 Heddon catalog may be viewed here. www.antiquefishinglures.com/1971heddon.htm

Thanks so much. That is my reel pictured on the website you sent. I guess mine is the largest size of the series. In the photos I can even see the little key I was talking about. It is a tiny spot on the spool end of the axle shaft. I can’t thank you enough for sending that website. I’m going to print some screenshots for my files. My 284 is very close to being mint though I have no box or papers for it. I have fished with it in the surf twice and have kept it as nice as I can. I didn’t think it had three bearings so I’m going to pull it out and investigate. Thanks again for the info.!

Chester, I hadn’t read your original comment when I was responding to you. That was great - Heddon-istic and Heddon-ist! and Heddo-file. I love it. I have been married 42 years to a punster so I have learned to love them and the minds that think them up. I didn’t realize that you are also the Heddon-whisperer! 20 reels. I can’t say anything since I have 23 Mitchells. I think I have 18 older Daiwas as well as 11 pre 1980 Penns including 6 greenies. I’ve been collecting since April of 1919 and now have close to 90 reels altogether. I’ve collected vintage surf spinning reels hence my interest in the 284. Only have the one Heddon. I’ve wanted a Heddon 290 Spin/matic for a while but haven’t found exactly the one I wanted to pay for. There’s a Roddy reel very similar to that Heddon that I almost bought til I spied a defect on one of the photos. It might have actually been called a Roddymatic(?) I’m a retired minister and though once a “fisher of men” I’m now a “collector of reels.” LOL it has been great talking to you. Now I know where to go with Heddon questions in the future! You may actually be a little older than me but I doubt by much. I was born in 1954. Please don’t be offended if I am wrong.

@@christopherjenkins2373 You're correct, l was born in 1953. The Heddons from 281 to 284 are probably their best. I'm still looking for a Heddon 234. Before this pandemic, l was on a roll, usually picking up 4 or 5 old reels from EBay per month, usually Shakespeare, DAM Quick, Mitchell, Abu, Heddon, Daiwa, Penn, South Bend, or Pflueger.

@@chesterspradlin6743 I think the Heddon SPIN / MATIC 280 is the correct name and number of the Heddon reel I have been interested in. I have a particular interest in PUM or manual pickup reels. The Heddon 280 is that type of reel but it has the little pointed part at the line pickup point. There’s a screw on the side of the reel that usually holds a spare for this pointed line pickup. Are you familiar with this Heddon. Like I said there is a Roddy-matic reel that functions and looks almost exactly like this SPIN / MATIC Heddon reel.

@@christopherjenkins2373 Yes, l've seen pictures and descriptions of the 280 and the Roddy. They're scarce on EBay, at least affordable ones in mint condition.

I bought one of these reels at a garage sale a few years ago for $5. I wish I knew what size the threads are in the oiling hole because it would be super easy to 3D print a plug.

Would you Dennis or anyone out there have a reel handle for this model reel Heddon 220-R? I picked some old vintage reels that had some parts missing and I am in need of a reel handle for this reel to complete the reel. I have cleaned and lubed and it (with help of this video) and it works like a charm but needs a handle.

Daisy Heddon was a sporting goods manufacturer that is know for their firearms and fishing reels. Their rifles included a model for bb pellets featured in the movie A Christmas Story, and a .22 caliber model introduced in the early 1960s. They also featured fishing reels under the Heddon name. Most of those were made in Japan. You can still buy these for around $20 for most models. They are very reliable and nicely designed reels - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Dennis, the only Heddon I have is a mint 284. It is similar to a Mitchell 302 in that there is a tiny little key piece on the axle shaft that if lost makes the reel useless. It literally turned the rotor on the reel. I have fished with it in the surf and it does just fine. That little tiny piece makes me nervous however. Based on that single issue I haven’t pursued any more Heddon reels at this point. Enjoyed the video! By the way, I found out more information about that Mer 52 Punch French surf reel I told you about earlier this year. A gentleman in NY remember a friend of his who fished the reel back iin the 50s. He dated the reel from 1953 and said it was derived from the early French Hellion reel. He also gave me his figure fore the value of the reel. He was very helpful.

    • @2ndChanceTackle

These are nice reels. Sounds like the bigger one has a key, like the 302 when lost, the reel is useless.
      Best wishes - Dennis

Christopher, l don't have a 284, but found a 281 which is similar and the smallest of the series. Not really considered an ultralight at 9.6 ounces. The 281 has the familiar oscillating loop and no crosswind block. l don't recall it having the little key on the axle you mentioned.

@@chesterspradlin6743 Were they solid green? My 284 is solid green. It is a really beautiful reel. I wish I could show you a picture of my 284. It is quite different from the two color Heddon reels. I’m certainly not putting down the Heddon that I have. it’s just that small key makes me very nervous when I’m using it in the surf. The reel is incredibly smooth with one ball bearing and bronze bushings. (I think.)

Thanks for putting up this video. Nice reel with a couple of curveballs. Great job on getting all the sand out effectively too. Seems like the main gear metal material might be a pot metal ? Again, great video. !!
