This video explains applying cement stucco over a block wall and stairs to match a 100-year-old Chimney. Can you stucco a retaining wall? Of course, there are many ways and stucco types of cement for stuccoing over any retaining walls.
I looked at it and said we could come as close as the next guy, if not closer.
I explained the Chimney’s age and finish and why it looks as it does after close to 100 seasons of sun and rain.
What happens when you mix a white stucco and then add brown sand?
You get a tan color. Does this stucco finish need to be painted? No.
Why not? It’s cementitious, like a brick.
However, a person can paint it if they want.
Lastly, no metal mesh or stucco netting is necessary for the stucco to adhere to the concrete blocks. In fact, attaching stucco netting would be counterproductive.
Nor is a bonding agent like “Weld Crete or Quikrete” necessary as the wall was pressure washed or micro scored or etched by me with more than 3,500 PSI water pressure to allow for the suction required to adhere the new stucco permanently to the blocks.
Just like the stucco was applied to the block chimney.
• Concrete retaining wal... Sand and stucco applications.
• Stucco walls with trow... Apply stucco to walls with anything.
• Bad stucco patches, ho... Re-stucco a wrong finish.
• The right stucco for y... Stucco is the exterior BMI reinforced Fiberglass plaster.
Thank you Kirk. Great explanation of all the steps to finish. I don't stucco all the time, but education like this just keeps our mind from rusting.
Evening David, thank you, that my job description, like a can of WD 40, I'm lubricating the squeaking parts.
"Nothing adhere to dirt, nothing" I would say more dirt can adhere to dirt :D
Exzackory, my friend.

Morning Juan, exzackory.
You forgot to say "Kirk's the best" at 12:00
Exzackory, that was to prove a point, it was rock hard, that allowed for proper floating with a hard rubber float to match that 100-year-old chimney.
You’re truly an artist, Kirk. Such a zen like feeling listening to your trowel put on the stucco!
Evening Jeff, it does sound kinda cool, thank you for the kind words.😉
All episodes are good but this one is particularly well presented. It makes me want to get out there and stucco my block wall (which isn't built yet as the house is under construction). Thanks for this as well as answering my past questions!
Howdy Big Dan, thank you, my friend. May your plans go as sweet as this project did.
Have an issue adapt and continue. My issue was the mud was too sandy at first, no problemo, I told my brother, Lou, to add more cement, then we were back in business.
Kirk I love you you are amazing and humorous to watch. Thanks for your expertise.
Oh sweetie, I definitely love your style, I mean, that comment working, thank you.🥂
The best. Absolutely the best.
Omar, far from it my brother, but if you say so, cool beans daddieo.😉
Great Chanel etc... but how come everywhere apart from 🇬🇧 is rough as old boots. I’m not trying to offend you honestly. But we would be kicked off jobs for leaving a finish like that
A lot different finishes is all I’m saying

Great video, thanks for the Eisenwall tip. I stuccoed my chimney today and I mixed color and concrete and applied it with gloves.
This is underrated, I have done this too.😉
Another great lesson. You guys have so many instructional videos. It’s a Masters Class on techniques, tools and materials. And also respecting your wife and family. You should be proud Mr. G.

Great work brother love ur videos 🙌🏽
Brother Vargus, thank you, love your thumbnail, it's working, but you know this is a rated G channel.🤔
Greetings from So.Cal!
Question: Can one finish their concrete block wall with a close enough "steel trowel" finish with just plaster sand & plastic cement only? Maybe add more lime? What ratio? No stucco, we'll be painting a topcoat.
Yes you could make your own finish that way.. the finer the sand, the finer the finish. 60 mesh sand would probably work. Still, buying proper pre mix finish that includes all the ideal additives would be better imo.
And by steel trowel finish I suppose you mean smooth finish. Grab a spray bottle and work the walls. Watch a video if you're unsure of application
Yo Goombah, absolutely, you can use any cement plater; my fellow plasterer below, Preston, is correctomundo.
The finer the sand, the less elbow grease or pressure is needed.
ua-cam.com/video/dw34VLYFC1Y/v-deo.html/ Home depot sells Greencore USA; all you do is add water is really fine sand.
You are just too damn cool!
Evening Kristine, if I was as cool as you are beautiful, that would be mighty cool to be, all right, 😉
Just eating my breakfast getting ready for work .......great video to start the day 👍
Evening Gladiator Dude, you are a hero among men, thank you.🍻

LOL. Today, people pay big money to by pants with holes in them. My holes come from a hard days work. The girls don't give me a second look but they keep buying pants and shorts with more holes in them. LOL! Guys who wear pants with holes in them and have never done a hard days work freak me out. Your entire family has holes in their pants, male and female. Respects to all as they are a result of an honest hard days work. And thanks to all who have helped the blue collar people mend their clothes. May people look at holes in pants in a new way from now on.
Respects, Kirk, family, crew and all blue collar people. The holes in our pants are a bonus for hard work which money can't buy. May you wear and all blue collar people wear them with pride and dignity. I personally go through at least 24 pairs a year. Do you think their is a market for our pants? If so, perhaps we could semi retire, but I know for a fact that we love what we do.
whats the purpose of the wood float, never see you using it?
@@thepsychonaut8212 Excellent Question, our hard rubber float is my preference, but there are folks who prefer the wood or plastic floats, they are designed to compact the stucco and make the walls true and plumb.😉
Congratulations!!
Jayson and Sarah send their thanks. That boy is growed big time now.🧞
Nice job. Let me guess ... they are sprucing it up to sell and they want it to look nice for the possible buyers and don't care what it is going to do in 3-4 months? In my back yard I have sidewalks and steps that are concrete, all messed up, and I was hoping there could be a way to put something in a thin layer over it to make it look better. Can I do that with concrete/Portland cement? That really looks nice though.
Complete opposite my friend, they are living the remainder of life there and their kids inherit.
The coming cracking of the stairs will be minimal, however, I have to point it out,.
The new stones will cover any cracking, I applied the stucco over these stairs for runoff of the rain, I do expect it to stay on for at least 50 years however the stair area will crack.
What about Bond before you put finish
All explained in the video, we did a cementitious mechanical bond, much stronger than any bonding agent that can be rolled on.🤔
Kirk, I have been watching you for many years now, and I have to say that I love the work that you do. I have learned so much from you and when I incorporate your techniques, my jobs (which I do for myself and not professionally) turn out great! Thanks again for your wonderful tutorials and thorough explanations! Congrats on your beautiful grandson!
Good morning Fred, thank you.
Aloha Kirk. Noticed you always wear white as I do. Many people ask why. We both know. What I want to know is how does your wife keep your clothes so white and does she actually let you put them in the family washing machine? The whole world could benefit from her secretes. You look like you could put in a 12 hour day and go to church wearing the same shirt. I look forward to her teachings. Hope she is humble like you. While you make your work look easy which it is truly not, I have a hunch she will say keeping your cloths clean takes a lot of hard work and team work.
Respects to you and your family,
Sky
Howdy Sky Hawaii, there is no secrete, I have a salvation army thrift shop two blocks from my house, every Friday all clothes are half off. I don't believe I have paid more than two bucks for any of the work shits I wear,, Some jobs we can't keep clean, so often I will have to sacrifice a shirt to the garbage can. Rather than risk, getting other clothes beat up in the wash.🍾

Good evening Dennis, thank you, we matched what they asked for. It is different and pretty. cheers.😉
There is no way that’s 100 years old
I disagree, but we don’t have to agree on anything, that’s far from the point of the video.
wow your the best on you tube nice
Evening Steve, thank you, my friend.😉
Kirk, I’ve watched many of your videos,I have a retaining wall on either side. Of my lower driveway. It’s the same block used at your mother in laws house on your 11/20 2011 video. It was never installed properly, no felt behind the block, and I have total sand here. The sand works it’s way through the block and leaks onto the driveway. I’m wondering if I can spray a light coat of mortar to seal it up a bit. I don’t think the pressure would build up too much because of the amount of sand to drain into the ground. Please advise.EKW
Howdy Edward, sorry brother, no retainer wall can be concreted or stop a leak from the side it's protecting.
It is the rear that retaining the dirt or sand that needs to be repaired.
On another note, can you drill some holes near the bottom to allow the rain water out?
Great stuff Kirk! You said something very interesting at around the 12 minute mark which caught my attention, what if it was applied too thin and you said nothing but you would see the grout lines between the block. I was a 4th generation bricklayer for about 25 years and I've been debating with my father about the strength of a base coat "painted" to a brick exterior. I have experimented with interior fireplace with white stucco base but i literally dusted, vacuumed and wet surface properly and it has held up for a few years now! I think if prepping with pressure washer and detail thin coat on outside would transform some ugly brickwork and last! Also much more cost friendly than lime paint and such. Thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge my friend.
Good evening Daryl, you're a fourth-generation bricklayer, man. That's some time in and passed down wisdom there.
I have more videos in the description on going over concrete, bricks, or block walls.
It's all the same, clean the wall well, with what I term micro etching or scoring with a powerful pressure washer.
Then if at least a half-inch of any stucco is applied, the grout lines won't show when it gets rained or wet.
However, if that newly stucco wall is to be painted no matter how thin a coat when wet and painted, the grout lines cant show anyway as that once porous wall is now a painted, thus sealed wall.
Cheers, my felly craftsman.🍻
I won't be the know it all here. I'm a small stucco llc in Tampa FL.
prep is crucial in almost any prep/Stucco/cement project as well as many others of course. "Proper prep prevents potential problems previous people performed WITHOUT proper prep " yes, thats my original quote learned from mistakes and yes, failures.
🚦Be careful using cleaners, acid and other chemicals that can have a lasting PH effect even after wash/rinse. We prefer to take our time. lots of pressure and rinse.
All cementious products ( stucco, concrete, cement of any type )
are PH sensitive so the sale bet is more water, less chemical. Even more so if applying coatings, stains, or any type of paint.
Kirk is awesome and I've learned and benefited from his videos 👍💎
Steven, my fellow plasterer, thank you brother, and a big, Exzackory.🍺
Hey Kirk- Did you apply a bonding agent to the clean CMU before stucco? thanks! -mj
Evening Michael, no, a better bond is a mechanical bond.
The Plaster Master once again ! 💪🏾 thank you for posting and the knowledge kirk!
Evening numbers dude, thank you, the knowledge is there for the taking, the world needs more plasterers.😏
What if the mortar joints show though the stucco? Is it efflorescence?
Hey Kevin, that's too thin a coat which makes that happen.🤔
I can never get enough of your advice on how to make my DIY work easier.😀 I love it that you keep telling us how to get it to sick easier on the wall. You guys always keep it do simple that a girl like me has no doubt I can do it. I’m very grateful for your advice and knowledge that you keep passing on thank you please keep up the great work you guys are awesome I can’t say that enough
Cool beans Connie, I have two daughters that can plaster as good as most men, too, btw.
They are not full-time plasters as they have careers that they enjoy more than plastering, but then can plaster, just as good if not better than most men. Thus, absolutely you can too.
No, they didn't spend years learning but instead day or so now and then.
Pressure washing is easiest. But there is a much more dirtier way to go about it yet effective in my exp.
and it’s using an angle grinder. But ,ind you.
Even with a proper protective gear it’s messy. And without it u are just signing ur own death warrant from whatever u grinder that will get into your lungs.
Also u need to put some nylon barrier or the dust will reach all over the place.
So… better do pressure washing .
Morning Gefilt, exzackory, grinders kick up silica dust which is just as harmful as asbestos. I don't want to come home with Silica dust on my clothes for my family to unconsciously inhale and or spread it to neighbors. No grinding or sandblasting.
I love watching Mr. Giordano's show. I bet he could teach any subject, and it would still be fun and enjoyable. Not every human has the trait of being a good teacher/mentor, regardless of whether they know and/or master the subject they are talking about.
Off topic, you left me wondering, why does cement eat up everything, (one's jeans, shoes, skin, etc.)? Basically, what's in it that makes it so corrosive to things it comes in contact with?
Good morning Juan, the chemical is called LYE, it's sort of like battery acid. A young girl had to have 8 fingers amputated in the UK messing around with a plater product, making a so-called cast for her hand.
My own hands years ago were so bad, I missed work for a week to allow the skin to regrow as all my fingers bled and hurt like hell for trying to be cool, and not wear gloves.🤔
@@StuccoPlastering Thanks for the explanation. Lye, oh, I see. (lye = a highly alkaline substance, usually either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, that can cause severe damage or burns and is used in making cleaning products)
Poor girl, such a tragic story. But anyway, I'm glad my "Online Plaster/Applicator Master Mentor" is promoting not only a cool but also a safe industry/trade practice.
Another Interesting video.. Great job my beautiful amazing friend. 👏 🥰

Hey Kirk I am the owner of a pressure washing business and we commonly wash stucco buildings with our Softwash equipment. We use about 4-6% sodium hypochlorite (pool shock) for the cleaning in our solution. Do you recommend any other products alternatives or recommendations? Is there any occasion when not to use bleach on stucco?
Thank you!
Evening friend, all I use is water, but with a really high PSI strength.
@@StuccoPlastering sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn’t mean to prep the stucco. Cleaning it and maintaining… We would never point a power washer with a turbo nozzle to a stucco home

You’ve probably seen a lot. Can you tell me the best product to use to color a stucco retaining wall to give it a softer more natural look. Color is buff just too light.
Paint
Evening Becky, but of course, La Habra's Image. It's an acrylic stucco.
You would have to google "Plastering yards near me" to purchase.
It goes on like whipping cream and gives a super smooth finish. Best to google the product, to see if it's right for you also.🤔
So bad if you use corners fill in the corners don’t just put it over it it will tear
Howdy, not sure what you mean?
You help
Me
More than you would
Ever know, i used cmp cr-90 on stuff like this and it seems to be even stronger than any stucco i have used, i am not even close to having your level of knowledge or time doing this, what is your thoughts???
BMI 290 is great to skimcoat walls. Shit gets hard as f cuzza the polymers. Or just add 8 oz of cement bonder glue to a bucket of sand and cement
Evening Rhymes Dude, Thank you, my friend, for the kind words.
I have applied the material you mentioned for an industrial company about ten years ago. They provided the material but wanted professional plasterers to use it; we did.
It applied beautifully.
There are these days so many different companies making stucco products, most spread as quickly as the one in this video.
I chose Eisenwall for the color as when dried, it was close.
I believe that CMP cr-90 had similar if not more strength than the Eisenwall but only sold in white or grey.🤔

So it’s one skim-coat? And the thickness you ended up with? Looks just great! It’s exactly what we want but in a white.
Evening Lisa, they sell white sand at HD that can be mixed with this white stucco, or you can apply a skim coat and apply a color coat finish coat called crystal white.
"What if I remove this acorn right here?" LOL
🥳
Do you only do one coat, isn't that only 5-7 mm thick.
Hello Gillylife, no idea how thick it is as I apply coat after coat until I'm sure it's thick enough not to allow the rain to saturate it then have the grout lines show through.🤔
