      Pretty early in the film I was thinking the title should be “Dude, you’re screwed!” That thought never really changed until the very end when the time between when he sat down and the others appeared was a bit ambiguous-seconds or minutes? Absolutely amazing work by all! 👏👍🚀🫡

      What a nonsense! The thin density of the Martian atmosphere can't inflate a parachute glider so much, let alone to drag a human around on Mars! And then the howling storm...just RIDICULOUS! The movie "The Martian" already demonstrated its incompetence with such nonsense! PS: ...an oxygen cylinder will never explode on the side in a pinpoint fashion; it is more likely to survive such a crash in one piece.

    Mistake #1: keep the parachute for needed shelter and warmth for the Mars nights.
    Mistake 2: Scout out the wreckage closes to you for supplies and items you may need to traverse the landscape.
    Secure yourself in your shelter first. Worry about the bodies later.
    Locate additional O², food, and water supplies.

    • @dasfoot
      @dasfoot Місяць тому +7

      Actually mistake #1 was surviving a parachute landing on Mars. It wouldn't be possible as the atmosphere is 1% of what it is on Earth. He would have hit the surface at an incredible speed. But, the animation was awesome nonetheless.

    This is an excellent piece of work by all concerned. Have you perhaps read the very good science fiction short story by Theodore Sturgeon from October 1959 - "The Man Who Lost The Sea" ? It is a challenging read, that rewards the effort. It has a mention in Wikipedia, and is available to read on Strange Horizons. Like you, Sturgeon often explored roads less traveled.
    In some ways, TMWLTS had a similar theme to this one, with an ending that was downbeat and triumphant at the same time. With the help of some friends in 1969 (at Otago University, New Zealand), and with rather less in the way of resources available, I made a short 16mm B&W film based on Sturgeon's story. So I salute your achievement!

    Parachutes do not work on Mars

    • @bryanillenberg
      @bryanillenberg 4 дні тому

      If the craft (in this case, an astronaut) is light enough, and the parachute is large enough, then it does work.
      Technically, a parachute of basically infinite radius would work with the moons (practically vacuum) atmosphere.

  • @noneofyourbeeswax01
    @noneofyourbeeswax01 Місяць тому

    Very well made and emotive animation - but I have to take issue with the depiction of the Martian wind being able to drag along a human body, parachute aided though it is.

    • @Spherical_Cow
      @Spherical_Cow Місяць тому

      What's even worse, is the parachute couldn't have possibly worked in Mars' thin atmosphere, to begin with - so wouldn't even be equipped on such a mission, as it'd be less than useless! 🤦‍♂️

  • @McClarinJ
    @McClarinJ Місяць тому

    Because of the lightning pace of progress with AI-driven robot workers, I expect they will comprise the first wave, setting up habitats, underground farms, ice mining, fuel plants, and infrastructure for the first human colonists. That will greatly reduce the risks for the first humans but, as Elon Musk warned in his Mars colonization skit on Saturday Night Live, people will certainly die in the attempt.

    I am afraid that a parachute of that size would result in a rather large hole in the ground !- also dust storms in low density atmospheres are not really a threat - the gravity is 38% of Earth.

    • @RobinClaassen
      @RobinClaassen Місяць тому +2

      I don't think the video implies that the dust storm itself was a threat. My understanding is that the guy started running just because he was afraid of losing visibility and not being able to find his way to the crashed ship. (Martian dust storms _can_ reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the surface by 99% at their peaks.)
