  • SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) explained.
    SMPS is a very important topic and it's of great use in any industry. It is replacing linear power supplies because of its superiority and the wide range of advantages it has.
    I have explained it with appropriate waveforms and suitable diagrams.

    Thank you for this presentation. It was nice to review how SMPS work and I see you have a good understanding of this. One query though. I thought you said that the feedback modified the frequency of the PWM. It seems to me that what is modified is the mark-space ratio of the signal, which modifies the average voltage of the output. If you modify the frequency then the average voltage remains the same. Perhaps I heard wrong :-)

    But I would like to have a small clarification.
    How can the transformer used in SMPS, step down the pulsating DC? Usually transformers are used to step up or down AC.
    Please reply.

    • @basicsguru5243
      @basicsguru5243  7 років тому

      Deepa Francis Transformers can convert any varying voltages. It need not be an AC voltage at the input. Any varying value can either be up or down converted.

    • @Alan_vital94
      @Alan_vital94 5 років тому +1

      They use a transistor to vary or fluctuate the DC voltage for transformer after that transformer gives the desired waves and then again it coverts into DC by using a rectifier and filter.

    First of all, I will say you did a great explanation but I have little disagreement here at 4:33. Are you sure , feedback used to control chopping "frequency"? I don't think so , rather it used to control "duty cycle" only , keeping the chopper frequency same throughout the control process. .

    Explanation is quite good,
    but what is the need of chopping the dc voltage ??

    • @basicsguru5243
      @basicsguru5243  7 років тому +2

      Kapil Gupta DC voltage has to be down converted. So by chopping we change it to pulsating dc and apply to the transformer for down conversion as we can not give dc voltage as the input to the transformer.

    Sir, what's the difference between smps and regulated power supply rps

    • @youseff500
      @youseff500 Рік тому

      Switch mode power supplies use step down/up converters, where as linear power supplies use linear voltage regulators.
      Linear voltage regulators have lower noise/emi, but can't handle as much current. They aren't as efficient, as whatever voltage above the regulator rating gets dissipated as heat.
      SMPS work using inductors, which store current in their magnetic field. They barely waste anything by heat, but they create more noise/interference. Low power DC appliances use linear because they're cheaper, while pc PSU's use converters because they can output more current and higher voltages, which means greater wattage.
