Aw! Hispanic lady here, but when my son was in 2nd grade he was given Ireland as his country to study. I made 2 batches of soda bread and I happened to walk in to discount store Big Lots and found Irish tea. For presentation day the kids all had fresh bread with Kerry gold butter, and hot Irish tea with milk and sugar. It was a HIT!! I never found that particular recipe but this is pretty much the way i made it (but I put it in regular oven tray not a skillet) thank you for this recipe! Im planning on making Irish stew once we get another rare cold front here in South Texas.
Awesome. When you make the Irish stew please let me know how you like it.
I bet the teacher had a fun day after a roomful of kids on a strong Irish brew 🫖
@@goodsamwise what do you mean? I don't follow. Hehe
@@goodsamwise 😀🤭🤫
I use Irish butter to top mine. The label says the dairy cows eat lots of clover. I don't know if it means anything. But it taste good.
I read through a lot of the comments and got this.
4cups all purpose flour
1tsp baking soda
1tsp salt
1 3/4cups butter milk (or milk with 1tbs vinegar or lemon juice)
Stir and kneed ONLY TO COMBINE
Place in a parchment lined cast iron skillet (or a preheated pan)
Cover with foil and bake at 425°f for 30min
Remove foil and bake for 15 min
Rub with butter and cool on a wire rack
Thanks for the breakdown! 😊
Thanks for assembling the recipe for the rest of us! Very kind of you.
Thanks a lot. That helps.
You can use half whole wheat and half all purpose. Gives it more flavor.
my irish friend uses 1/2 cup of sugar since not using raisins.
I am just a new guy here! I really enjoyed you putting together this traditional Irish soda bread recipe. That's my heritage! Stay connected.
Thank you so much. I have Irish heritage too. I'm from Newfoundland.
Now, THAT is how to make a video!!!..... No faffing about, straight to the point with the information we're all looking for (except the kind of flour used). All done in just over 5 minutes. Perfect. xxx
Lilylibra thanks for the kind words! I just used all purpose flour. 😊
Yes!
I love: Bag pipes, short 'n sweet 5:39, lively encouraging voice, quick, precise prompts, and the beauty of your loaf. THE WAY A SODA BREAD VIDEO SHOULD BE DONE ~ JUST PERFECT!
Lapis Mosi thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I love your feedback. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video as much as I did in making it. More videos to come! 😊
LMAO!!!
"Gently pat for no reason"
LOL, I love it !!!
Great video!!
Haha thanks Clint!
Hey man. Just made this bread today from your recipe. I used whole milk with a tablespoon of vinegar to curdle it since i didn't have buttermilk on hand. Turned out awesome! My wife was surprised I didn't proof the dough before popping it in the oven. Overall, took 1 hr from start to finish (15 mins making the dough, 45 mins in the oven).
My son who isn't into bread even ate a couple of slices and asked for seconds! It's perfect with butter. Thank you for posting this, sending some good quarantine vibes from the Philippines! 🤘
I love hearing things like this. I'm so glad the milk/vinegar combo worked for you. Stay safe in the Philippines S B!
@@KnockoutKitchen thanks and you too! ♥️
can you taste the baking soda?
@@mereej8924 no
If I don't have buttermilk to hand I use plain yogurt, milk and a dash of lemon juice. It works out just fine.
Well mr knockout...this is the most successful soda bread recipe. You have it down. When you topped it off with butter i said to myself, "self, he knows what hes doing". No one ever taught me to butter the crust, it was instinctual.
Kat I am humbled. Thank you so much. I love so much that you enjoy it. ❤️ Buttering the outside was what my grandmother always did so I always do it.
I made this and it was fantastic. Tasted just like my Irish grandmother used to make. Good times.
That's awesome to hear. Thanks for taking the time to let me know!
I come back here from time to time just to refresh my memory and make sure I'm not missing anything with this delightful bread! I originally ran across it a while ago, and the first time I made it for my husband, he teared up. His grandmother was Irish and made this bread. Lol
Anyway, I've been charged with making Coddle this year for St. Paddy's day, so you know I HAVE to make this bread! Thank you so much! I LOVE the way this video is put together! ❤ I can't like this video again, so hopefully a comment helps!
🍀Happy St. Paddy's Day!!🍀

I know this is an older video, so you may not see this, but...
I've watched several of these Irish soda bread recipes, and yours was by far the most fun to watch!
Beauty for Ashes thanks for taking the time to tell me that. Awesome! The recipe does turn out excellent. I’m back at posting videos so keep an eye out. Thanks again! 😊
@@KnockoutKitchen Looks delish! I'll definitely be trying this out.
Just made it with my daughter, along with some homemade butter. Fantastic!

Ive never had soda bread before at least not that i remember. Now thanks to you i will probably never buy bread again. It taste amazing toasted with butter and raspberry jam and tea. Thank you for sharing.
Breanna Halici that’s so great to hear! I’m glad you tried the recipe! Cheers!
I made it again. This time i just baked it on a pizza stone. It came out even better. I absolutely love the fact that i do not have to knead it a lot or wait for it to raise. I can have fresh bread every day within an hour
Breanna Halici yeah that’s the beauty of it - how easy and fast it is. I have never cooked it on a pizza stone before, but it sounds like a good idea, and I will give it a try.
Breanna Halici just made this bread OMG so good its a meal by its self. Your right its so good with butter and jam.
This is the most intelligent recipe presentation I have come across. Straight up facts ... no BS ... no verbal diarrhea ... just the facts.
Well done mate. 10/10.

You had me at “schmeeer with butter” 🤣 Having this tomorrow with Irish Stew for a belated St Patrick’s Day dinner with family!

I don't have buttermilk please how much vinegar and milk should I use ty
Today I made my bread during this quarantine I'm really happy it is really crushy outside and soft inside. A big thanks to you.
Instead of using buttermilk I have used milk and I have added vinegar in it . It has turned out really great.
That's awesome Nadine. Thanks for letting me know it turned out good! 😊

Mama used to tell me about this bread, but I was always too busy to write down the recipe. She’s gone now, as her all her generation. Thank you!
Gwen Dixon thank you for your comment! You should definitely try making it. It’s much easier than a standard yeast bread and just as delicious!

Thank you so much for this simple Irish soda bread recipe. I first fell in love with this bread in the 80s when a coworker handed out several loaves of bread to each office on St. Patrick’s Day every year. I really looked forward to it and since I was the office manager, the bread came to me so I got to sample it first. By the time my office coworkers got to it, I had eaten at least a quarter of the loaf. I selfishly didn’t care though because it was delicious especially with the butter the coworker provided. Now I can make and devour my own Irish soda bread.
Please let me know when you make it and hour it turns out. It's definitely easy for non bakers to make!
I will definitely!
Typical
I will make this surprise for my Irish husband tomorrow. I’m Brazilian and it will be a big surprise for him. Thanks !
Oh that's so awesome! Please let me know how you both like it Aurea! 😊😊😊

Awesome. Let me know how it turns out James. I hope you enjoy!
Thank you for recipe 😊🍀
Love this bread with Olives, Sun dried Tomatoes, I add any Seeds.
If I dont have buttermilk I use Greek style yogurt instead.
I always add 1 tbs of PSYLLIUM HUSK rise the bread, cakes and absorb moisture so cooking doesnt dry it much.
So delicious 😋 🍀
Oh wow Greek yogurt works. Thanks for sharing that!

That's why I found this too! No yeast...
Thank you. My youngest really wants to learn to cook and bake and I think she would love to do this.

'Pat it for no reason:. Brilliant!

Please kindly continue posting your much appreciated videos even in these challenging times 👏
Thank you for the kind words Julia. It is greatly appreciated. I will be posting more recipes soon.
This is the traditional and IMHO the correct recipe for Irish Soda Bread! No raisins. No caraway seeds-save them for baking New York style Jewish rye bread for the leftover corned beef* Reubens the next day. I make soda bread for St. Paddy's Day dinner and spread it with Kerrygold butter from Ireland. Beautiful!!
*I know they don't really eat corned beef and cabbage in Ireland but I love it anyway!
Awesome Mike. Thanks so much for the kind words buddy! Happy Paddy's Day!
We do eat cabbage, and kale as well. Ever heard of colcannon?
Yes they eat corned beef and cabbage.
Thanks for the video. Somehow, I lost my late (very Irish) husband's recipe. Going to make this tomorrow and see how close it is to how I remember his. (It's been a while ...) I loved the "pat for no reason" bit! That's reason enough.
Hehe thanks Brenda. Be sure to let me know how you like it. 😊
Excellent soda bread. And that Irish Stew looked soooooo tempting!
You definitely should make both. If you don't have lamb just use beef. Let me know if you try either recipe.
@@KnockoutKitchen Thanks for that. I usually use shin of beef for stews, but Irish stew has a different flavour all its own. My grandmother used to make it, although we never had it with soda bread, as she was a potato maniac and I swear she cooked ten pounds of spuds with every meal.lol. It has taken me 60 odd years to break myself away from the potato habit, and healthier for it I am too. That's not to say I don't still love them to bits. I made soda bread a few weeks ago which was very nice, if not a little too dense. The next time I make it I will add butter to the mix and some bicarbonate of soda as well as baking powder to try and get a softer crumb. Stay safe.
I have been making Irish Soda Bread for years (same recipe you have), embracing my heritage , the many relatives I never knew & introducing my children to it all. Such a simple, pure food & a meal in itself. But the tenting of aluminum foil I’d never done and I must say that it did make a huge difference in the outcome. Perfectly crusty with fluffy interior. Who wouldn’t want to make this many times other than St Patrick’s Day? And I have tried ( once )adding caraway seeds and raisins which totally defeats the purity of this bread. Your presentation/video was to the point & humorous. I look forward to more videos .
Thank you so much for sharing that Chris. You have no idea how this recipe has brought families together and gave them food during Covid when people couldn't buy yeast. Worldwide. This is such a great recipe to hand down to children. ❤️
Thank you for the measurements i hate it when videos don't have it.
warjdani thanks watching. I’m glad it came useful!
Made it today, to the letter, absolutely fantastic mate, I've been struggling in Australia for so long to make this bread properly, I am from Northern Ireland originally and have had problems with making farls for ever, today was my Eurika moment, thank you so much my new friend for ever !!!!!!!!!!
Oh man I'm so happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know! Awesome!!
Just made this in Denver, CO. Followed the recipe exactly as you stated, baking time as well. It was delicious! It rose quite a bit, with a crunchy crust and soft interior. Thank you for the great video.
Thank you so much for telling me this Zeca! I love when people give me feedback on my recipes. I'm so pleased to hear the bread turned out nice. I wish you all the best. 😊
! finally an original plain recipe with no extra stuff looks very good. I will try it.
Thanks Marshall. I hope you enjoy it!
Awesome thank you for recipe. Tip for others, if you don't want to do the parchment paper (I don't) you can just put some flour on bottom of the pan - it stops the bread from sticking or burning. :)
The parchment paper step is the most fun! But yes you can use extra flour like you suggest. Thanks Paula!
Easy I just made it. Thank you it’s wonderful. I had t with some olive oil and vinegar. Simple bread is what I want to make.
Great to hear Cindee! Thanks for sharing. That's the beauty of this bread, it's nice a simple and doesn't take forever to rise like yeast breads.
Love it, love it, love it!!!! In fact, this Greek boy is hooked on it. Thanks KnockoutKitchen!

How did the sandwich turn out Gymnopedie?
Thank you. Fell in love with this bread when I visited Ireland last month. I'm a bit shocked at how simple it is. Like, why isn't this eaten all around the world?
GBHanny8 it’s super easy. And delicious. I don’t guess it is well known all over. But not having to deal with rising or yeast makes it so easy and still delicious. Thanks for watching!
@ 3:17..."and gently pat for no reason." LMAO This looks REALLY good.

That’s a good one. I ball up the parchment paper to fit the bottom of my cast iron Dutch oven, flour the bottom instead of spray but a skillet and tin foil works too.
Awesome! It's such a great easy recipe Michael.

you also have to poke each quarter to let the fairies out! Very Important
Very cool tip. Thank you. I love fairy lore.
Thanks again for your video. I did tweek the recipe a bit. I followed your base recipe and added 1 egg to the buttermilk and a whopping 1/2 cup of sugar. Oh my! I followed your cooking direction as well and it turned out perfect. My husband said that I should stop making this bread ... NEVER!. I used blessed salt, a drop of holy water and said the prayer while making sign of the cross (score) . Perfect! So because of the egg you do have to flour your hands and work in a little extra flour to form a nice ball.
Sounds excellent! That's what cooking is all about Tina, adding and trying whatever additions you like. 😊
@@KnockoutKitchen LOL It is definitely not penitential bread.

Looks great, thank you. I enjoyed your show. It's remarkable how many different ways people make this. I was taught to mix no more than 10 times gently, not knead. And to hurry to get it in the oven while the buttermilk is still active. Funny

@@christineannette471 awesome! 👏👏👏
Can this be made with evaporated milk? Finding buttermilk is getting difficult and not sure if evaporated milk can be made into buttermilk with vinegar?
Excellent question Mary. A lot of people have been adapting this recipe lately. For evaporated milk I would try diluting it will some water then add some vinegar or lemon juice. 1 to 2 tablespoons. I have never tried this particular variation but from what I hear from people who have tried variations, this should work. Please let me know how it turns out Mary. Best of luck! 😊
Ordinary milk to which you add lemon juice = buttermilk. It works for me.
