    Using milk is a great way to apply labels to homebrew bottles. It's really quick and very cheap. I've used 1% and non-fat milk before with the same results. Only downside is you really can't leave these in the fridge too long or the labels tend to fall off, and you definitely can't put them in an ice bath without the labels falling off.

    9 years later just want to say that this was super helpful! I don't even make beer or have a need for this, but wanted to see how it was done and this was the only video I found! Thank you again!

    You know how wet the ink is when you first pull a freshly printed sheet off the printer? Have you ever touched it too soon and it smeared the design? Well, the same thing will happen when you get it wet again with milk. The inkjet printers spray wet ink on the paper kinda like painting. The reason I recommend laser printers is because they use heat to melt the toner onto the paper so the colors don't run.

    Thanks for posting this! I am putting together an Old Manhattan Beer Bottle from the 1940's using a New Old Stock Label, a bottle from that time period and some New Old Stock caps....... I only have one shot in getting the label in place. This is very helpful....

    I used inkjet paper and Walmart blue top milk. They all fell off the next morning. Seems to work better with laser printer or boiled & reduced milk.

    Thanks. Yeah I tried last night... the paper looked pretty washed-out and almost ruined, but did stick to the bottle perfectly. However this morning after "drying" it didn't look too bad. But I'd imagine again putting it into the fridge would cause the bottle to sweat, and probably ruin the paper again. So yeah, thanks for the advice and next step for me will be trying the laser printer.

    Do you think this would work well with Grolsch bottles? (They are embossed...is that the right word?...so maybe there isn't enough contact with the label(?)

    • @caseysousa
      @caseysousa  7 місяців тому

      Honestly, I haven't tried it before, but I doubt it will work. The raised letters on Grolsch bottles would probably make any lable difficult to stick.

    I designed the label myself. The golfer is lifted from a vintage travel poster, but I did the rest.

    Came across this video trying to find a way to do custom beer labels for my wedding…super cool technique. Do you know how well these would hold up being put in a cooler with ice? I’m assuming not well unfortunately

    • @caseysousa
      @caseysousa  2 роки тому

      If they get wet, they will fall off in minutes. It really only works if you're keeping the bottles in a fridge. You'd probably be better off getting a roll of custom labels printed and sticking them on the bottles. Just make sure you stick the labels on dry and room temp bottles because stickers don't work well on wet or cold bottles. It's best to label all the empty bottles first, then sanitize them, then fill them. I hope you have a great wedding!

    How much does the ink bleed from condensation once someone is drinking a cold brew?

    • @ObsessedBrewing
      @ObsessedBrewing 5 років тому

      Honestly, it depends. If you leave a cold beer out in the hot and humid air for an hour, you're gonna get a lot of condensation and if you used an inkjet printer, probably some ink bleeding. But that's the worst case scenario. I recommend you pour your beers into a glass for people to drink from, or use a laser printer so the ink doesn't bleed.

    Not sure if you are responding to a video this old but I am curious. Do you use photo paper or regular paper? How does the ink not smear as you wipe on the label? If the bottle is refrigerated and then taken out to drink causing bottle to sweat does the label fall off? If the bottle is put in a cooler will the label bleed or come off? Thanks

    • @caseysousa

      @@caseysousa I tried it and it worked pretty good but I barely touched the label to the milk and it was saturating thru the label as I pressed it on and wiped. Does it do that on yours?

      @@Grandpa_RLP I haven't had that happen on mine. What kind of printer did you use?

      @@caseysousa I have an ink jet printer. My print doesn't have near the amount of color yours does. Yours almost looks like glossy paper.

    • @caseysousa
      @caseysousa  2 роки тому +1

      @@Grandpa_RLP Ah, yeah, you'll need to use a laser printer. Inkjet won't work with the milk method, but gluestick works pretty well as long as the bottle is dry and you use just a thin layer of glue.
