    Interesting. :D I have to admit, even with the problems you had with constructing the aliens, you definitely did what Mr. Cameron asked you to do: you created the most beautiful aliens I've ever seen in any film. It was a great job you did with them.

      The NTI's resemble creatures of the deep sea too. Cameron had a clear idea of what he wanted because he'd actually seen the luminous creatures of the deep and wanted angelic looking versions of those.

    I had no idea those things were practical effects. All these years I just assumed they were CGI.

      No. Wasn't advanced enough to do realistic looking sea creatures back in the late 80's.

    To everyone: Trey Stokes, who worked for Steve as the movement designer on this movie, also has a commentary for the Abyss at friendsinyourhead . com. It's quite good as well.
    Steve, I really loved seeing your perspective on the time spent on The Abyss after having heard Trey's.

    I loved the "wings" and flowy and light clear and all that but.. didn't really dig the standard alien head inside the thing. I mean... really? Kind of popped the whole magical bubble when I saw the heads in the movie.

    This is Steve, Andrew - and we will be getting into the creation and techniques of the abyss aliens soon, on the channel...

    Stan Winston was not involved with The Abyss. Being the intelligent artisan he was, he told Mr. Cameron that his request for these aliens was not possible at the time. I, like a moron, said: sure.

    I've heard creature creators say similar things over the years, which underscores that it's more art than science, even with all the chemistry involved.
    How much did it finally cost? (Or is that in the next installment?)

  • @healthier1
    @healthier1 15 років тому

    Don't remember how much it actually ended up costing. Gale Hurd, the producer, made me pay her back in blood.
