I have B12 deficiency due to Pernicious anemia. I was suffering from depression and I took treatment of depression for a whole year. Later it was diagnosed that I had very low hemoglobin in my blood due to B12 deficiency and depression was just the symptom of it. So now my only treatment is to get the injection of B12 regularly for the rest of my life. Fortunate enough that my doctor, a hematologist could successfully diagnosed my decease in a country like Bangladesh.

Yep, totally relate. I used to be vegan, so I ended up with a B12 and vitamin D deficiency. I got the standard NHS test for B12 and it came back on the edge of "normal" at 210, so they insisted that this was fine. My symptoms were brain fog, palpitations, fibromyalgia, low digestive motility, with occasional inabilty of digest food at all. Chronic fatigue, urinary issues, vision issues, memory issues, blood pressure that would range from 70/40 to 220/160, and electric shock sensations that ran from the top of my head to my feet, every 5 seconds, all day long. I had it for four years, and almost every day I thought I was done for. I had lots of GP blood tests, but gave up on them when some idiot shoved a mental health questionaire in front of me and told me to fill it in. Despite being hugely in debt by then, I eventually paid for a US vitamin D test and read up about B12 deficiency symptoms, and it started to make sense. I had unfortunately read lots of vegan propaganda about how we don't really need much B12 and how fortified foods protect you, which of course, is a lie. It's hard to explain why the medical industry are so dire at diagnosing what is such a devastating and often lethal nutrient deficiency, but they are.

      @thomasmeier0815 21 день тому

@@sedoniadragotta8323 It is very possible that you have thyroid problems because vitamin A is needed for T3 to work. As a vegan you only have beta carotene and this needs thyroid hormones to synthesize vitamin A from it. I lived vegan for 15 years and my hormone replacement didn't work anymore, it was a horror. All mucous membranes need vitamin A. So does your entire digestive tract. Yes, you have a vitamin B12 deficiency. Stop killing yourself!!!

I am of Swedish decent. PA runs in my family. I went many years without treatment. I am one year into treating myself, every other day and am just starting to recover some cognitive function (late 50's). My Mom was treated with "tablets" and she died a very painful death. We did not know at the time. B12 deficiency is a slow killer.

I live in the USA. My neuro diagnosed my B12 deficiency. Before I was able to begin the injections, she ordered a test to find out if there were autoimmune antibodies present....and they were. This meant that my Intrinsic Factor had been destroyed leading to a final diagnosis of Pernicious Anemia. Intrinsic Factor is an enzyme found in the Duodenum that absorbs the B12 from the foods you eat and transports it throughout the body. The only way to get the B12 your body needs to function properly is with a B12 injection. It doesn't matter how much B12 rich foods or supplements you take in, without I.F. your body will become B12 deficient. Two symptoms I didn't hear mentioned was problems with balance and memory. These symptoms mimic Multiple Sclerosis and Dementia. I wonder how many people have been misdiagnosed with these two diseases when in all actuality it was a B12 deficiency. I am so sorry that those of you who live in the UK have such a difficult time getting treatment for B12 deficiency. Even here in the USA, our primary care doctors (you call them GPs) do not order a B12 blood test with routine bloodwork...we have to ask to have it included but the problem is most patients do not know to ask for it.

I had a blood test the first time I went to a new primary care provider. They tested for b12 because then the next appointment I had to get an injection of it and then they ordered prescribed supplements. Doing research I didn’t realize how serious a deficiency was in some cases. I was having pins and needles in my hands and feet. Having it right now as I type this. I overlooked all that stuff until I was put on another medication. That medication seemed to have exacerbated my issues because everything just felt different. It’s crazy they just gave me the sample of it they have in the office the first appointment. Without consideration of the blood work.

I have the extreme fatigue and brain fog.
I am wondering though is muscle mass and loss of strength one of the symptoms?
My arms and body just feels extremely tired and heavy after even a small physical exertion and muscle contractions or use of strength.
I also wake up feeling NO energy as well.
I can't say I had all the same symptoms but depression, anxiety the pins and needles thing.
The worst however, was an initially large weight loss ( mainly muscle ) with loss of strength obviously and very heavy exausted arms and upper body with little to no physical exertion at all sometimes.
This has been going on for 3 plus months with doctors saying all your bloodwork is normal... but none have tested or even mention vitamin D or B12 or even magnesium at all much less testing them.
I am starting to go a bit nutty here... as my job and my family are at stake.

And the problem is that most doctors rely solely on potentially misleading serum blood tests & know diddly squat about the clinical symptoms.
Why are serum tests potentially misleading? Because they do not show cellular status, nor do they determine how much of the B12 is active or inactive. If most is inactive & has failed at some point in the conversion process, it cannot get into the cells & the test result may be meaningless.
There is no ‘gold standard’ test for B12 deficiency. Homocysteine & MMA tests ‘may’ help, but are not always accurate either. If someone has a low B12 level, then absorption may be the issue, however if the problem lies within the several step conversion process, you test result may be ‘normal’ or even high - and a high level may even be a ‘red flag’ that it’s not being utilised very well at cellular level.
Sadly, because of this, way too many people are falling through the gaping cracks in the system. My own husband’s B12 deficiency was dismissed at a level of 360, but because I am very familiar with the many symptoms, most of which he had, generous amounts of ‘Active’ (Methylcobalamin & Adenosylcobalamin) sublingual liquid B12 got him back on his feet within days.
Bear in mind that other B vitamin deficiencies may be a factor too, especially B1/Thiamine - and one of its many roles is in energy (ATP) production. It too can masquerade as many other diseases & ailments. Modern Beriberi is very much alive & kicking………

I have so much of this. But I’ve been trying B12 sublingual for years not sure that’s it (doctors didn’t really care either). Whatever it is still undiagnosed. That is my big problem….whatever I have, the tests come back and they blow me off. And might be depressed or attention-seeking, needing psychiatry. This is the biggest problem….they do basic tests, and shrug when they don’t see anything, instead of sticking with me and trying to find out what is wrong. I’ve had troubles for 25 years, increasingly. Weird stuff as well as “vague” symptoms like fatigue. I just want someone to keep helping me find out eventually. This is in the US BTW, so not generally socialized med. but the truth is all doctors are human, and most just go thru the basics and don’t make serious effort unless it’s common.

CAN ANYONE give me info whether B-12 can stay in the bloodstream and show up normal or high on tests, but it's NOT being absorbed in the GUT? Can that happen? Can't get that question answered, it's been years, and getting worse.

You need an active B12 test. A test for homocysteine and methylmalonic acid.
So yes you can take B12 have a serum blood test to say it's there, but it's not working at a cellular level. You can phone the Pernicious Anemia Society and get more details.
Unfortunately the NHS are way behind on all this, and slow, which is dangerous.

@@LaraClahane Thank you! I guess no doc here wanted to answer that question.I'm in the United States. Doctors here make a lot of money writing DRUG prescriptions. B-12 can't be patented, is a nutrient, so they avoid that, Big Pharma can't make billions on it and won't give doctors their free vacations and gifts for writing B-12 prescriptions as they do most drugs.
My symptoms have been ongoing for DECADES. No one investigates or prescribes B-12 injections, even if they're safe, but they'll write ten prescriptions for harmful drugs that can kill people. So backwards.
My red blood cells are fewer and larger, indicating B-12 deficiency. But my labs show high B-12 from sublingual supplements I take, so docs decline my request. I guess I have to endanger myself and deplete all of my B-12... NOT take any supplement for weeks, and test when I'm totally numb, hair falling out and lethargic? I'll ask for the tests you mentioned above. Thank you so much for responding. It's not taken as seriously as it should be. I'll keep you posted! God bless!

My serum level was normal but I have textbook symptoms (crushing fatigue, nausea, dizziness, palpitations, random pains, headaches, vision problems, ridged fingernails, muscle twitches and pins and needles in my hands and feet) so I paid for an active b12 test and it came back very low. I sent them this and said i need injections and they wouldn't even call me back, just text saying it's not a deficiency and my serum is normal. I immediately went and registered with another doctor who has put me on injections every other day for 2 weeks with a follow up at the month. I've probably just fell lucky finding a good gp but I can confirm a lot of them have no idea about this and will just fob you off which is horrific when you have symptoms like this.
