What a beautiful village! Imagine "what if" today's largest employers put out this level of care for their employees. I just feel like prosperity like this only begets bigger and better things.

It's a lovely place, and there's still social housing! How many multi million or billion factory owners do anything remotely like that for their employees or local area nowadays?
We had a cotton Mill near where I live (Leyland) in a place called Farington. The owners of that built a row of terraces for the workers in 1836. I lived in one of them between 2006-9. Apparently it was the longest row of terraces outside of London back when they were built. My house was the cobblers 🥾 shop originally. The bathroom floor had the boards exposed on the floor and on one of the boards there was a thick piece of leather that I presume was covering a hole in the floor board with old hob nails fastening it to the floor board. I swear the house has a spook 👻 too.
I worked as a temp at Cadburys for a couple of weeks in 2005, even though it was setting up a new peice of software for the IT infastructurewhich was dull I still had a fantastic time, the smell of chocolate as you arrived to work, free chocolates handed out in the afternoon and a staff card for the shop were you got massive discounts on their products and everyone was just chilled. I do wonder what the Cadburys would have made of the US Kraft takeover.

I couldn't get enough of the "free vending machines" and developed a huge addiction to Oasis Summer Fruits that summer - I think it was about ... 2005 too!! Way before the take over, apparently they don't get that anymore :(
I loved this! I live about an hour from Hershey, so I know about him. But I didn't know anything about Cadbury. It's inspiring to see how some wealthy people used their money to bless others.

Funny enough I have actually been there with my daughter who was referred to the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital from Wales to have a rare condition operated on. Totally successful thank goodness. And the original building was a Cadbury family home and was donated to be a hospital. So anyway the Village was a short distance away during Christmas time. It looked so lovely. We thoroughly explored it. Thanks for the video, it was good to see it again. .

Absolutely beautiful, we took our son there when he was four years old he had a lovely time with the factory tour and all the free chocolate. He will be 29 this August and lives in Canada. So I’ll show him this when I fly out this July and ask him if he remembers going. Thank you Lucy for a lovely video and giving me happy memories ❤

As a fellow brummie, I’m so glad that you show the lovely areas of Birmingham and the history of this city. Every other you tube video shows the worst areas (all cities have them) in such a derogatory way. I regularly go to Bournville to the village green, just 15/20 mins drive for me. Thanks for the positivity and sharing the history of Birmingham.
You are so welcome, honestly, it drives me mad how Birmingham is used as a by-word for "viral YT videos about a horrible place" .. because it ISNT. You could go to any City in the UK and hunt out the areas where you could show rubbish on the floor and derelict buildings. Birmingham is an easy target and I am totally here to debunk that! I live in an area Ross Kemp did a programme about "the most dangerous place in the UK" .. we all laughed ..

My first visit to Bourneville was on a school trip to the Cadbury factory way back in the 1960's and I remember thinking then how nice the village looked from the coach. So when I was in Birmingham a couple of years ago I decided to visit the area and spent a few enjoyable hours just wandering around taking photographs. I even stopped at the bakers you featured for a coffee and a Bakewell Tart!

I was hoping you were going to do this. I came to bournville about 25yrs ago when visiting Cadbury world and would have loved to look around the village but I was on a coach tour. I showed my mum who is 78 your black country museum episode and she really enjoyed it, I will have to show her this one.

Hi Lucy this was fascinating thank you for sharing. I always think of the people who needed work and must of been so happy to be employed. I met Thomas Dudley once and thanked him for employing so many people ( I’m originally from Dudley ) I don’t know anything about him but I felt like I had met a celebrity because his name was important to people where I’m from. Sorry I went off on a bit of tangent but I’m sure you know what I mean. I’ve always said if I had money I would put it to good use employing those that need a leg up much like the princes trust etc today. Sorry for rambling on. Bless ya and thanks mate 🥰👍

As someone whose favourite book/movie as a child/even now was Charlie and the Chocolate factory, I was OBSESSED with this place growing up. The old factory still gives me Willy Wonka vibes to this day 😂 And besides both my Nannies it’s one of the main reasons I have such a love of food and baking. This might me my favourite video you’ve done so far, I had a grin on my face all the way through ❤️❤️

No, it was a very popular place to work, my auntie worked there for years and she always had a big stock of Creme Eggs all year round when you couldn't get them in the shops, I used to be fascinated as she worked on Easter Eggs all year round, I just always presumed they made them just at Easter .. but no, there was a whole department :)
Another great video I remember taking our kids there about 30 years ago, on the factory tour my son loved the way every department you went through they gave you a chocolate bar a kids dream, I do not know if they still do that. The creme egg car was great.
You still see the Creme Egg car driving around occasionally .. no one takes any notice around here! I haven't been to Cadbury World myself for YEARS but I can't imagine they have stopped the chocolate .. I mean that's the whole point right ;) x
Years ago I hosted an event at ‘Saltaire’ in Bradford, Yorkshire. That’s another stunning workers village. In my neck of the woods there is Port Sunlight on the Wirral.
I really want to visit both of these, I have a friend that lives near Port Sunlight and it would make sense to go across to Saltaire too .. I just love these industrial villages with a social purpose. I believe Port Sunlight has some original cottages you can look around so I would love that!
I've always been curious about the Bournville village, as I've seen Port Sunlight village a lot. It must have been like living in luxury for the workers, compared to how they'd been used to living before. I've just Googled the dates and Port Sunlight was founded slightly before the Bournville village, but both equally fascinating.

Thank you so much for this Lucy. My maternal grandma was born in Birmingham (Aston Manor I believe). It is so lovely to see that part of our amazing country and the treasures it holds. 🥰🫂💚
I used to work for Cadbury's (well, actually, Cadbury Typhoo) at Bournville in the 80s-90s, so found this interesting. Even when I worked there, there was a feeling of the workers being cared for more than most other places. There were also the gardens - separate ones for men and women, with, I was told, an underground route from the factory and under the road to the women's garden, so that the women didn't have to risk being watched by the men. The gardens are still there, though no longer segregated. And the club was the only licensed place in the whole of Bournville that was permitted to sell alcohol.
Thanks so much for sharing that. It was such a a shame when the club burnt down several years ago. So many people relied on it as their social hub. That's really interesting about the men & women's passageways! I totally forgot it was it Cadbury, Typhoo at one point too ❤️
When I was about 10, I won a radio phone in competition to get to go to the Bourneville factory! I remember there was information inside about the garden village and the temperance movement etc. And that was 2004ish, so hopefully they still offer this history to the area within the experience of the factory.

Thank you Lucy, I had no idea that Bournville was such a beautiful place. I had distant relatives that lived and worked there in the 60's, how lucky they were. Seeing those b & w photos from the late 1800's or so was very sad, I have great grandparents and their families living there at that time, what a hard life they had 😞 Going a little off topic seeing the cake shop reminded me of going to a cake shop in my childhood and my grandmother buying me Kunzel Cakes, they were amazing! 😋
Ohhhh I recreated kunzel cakes for a good friends birthday many years ago! They are lovely! The chocolate shells were hard to achieve though! I think you can still get a similar thing at Betty's in York & Harrogate x

Hey! My Dad always talked about the baths, he LOVED it, he said it was the best relaxation for a penny .. boiling hot water and sit there for as long as you like. The baths were HUGE too from photos I have seen, not like the piddly little thing in my own bathroom where I struggle to soak my knees! haha

My memory of the village is a visit in 2005. My son wasn't a year old, I can't remember exactly how old now, but I had gone as a day out for my 7 year old daughter. Somehow, I had lost his baby cup and it was a mad hot day. I couldn't find d a baby cup for love nor money in the shops there! I was trying to teach him to drink water from a bottle, then I tried the lid.. he was soaking wet through by the time I had got about two drops of it in his mouth 😂 Poor lad had to wait until we were back on the coach and stopped at a service station where I paid an arm and a leg for a baby cup 😂 I should go back again and make a better memory haha
We always remember stressful days like that don't we? I have only been to Iron Bridge once, I was so excited but it was a bank holiday and there was no money in any of the cash machines and the museum only took cash, we sat in the carpark and the flask burst and went home sat on wet seats ... only makes us stronger eh?
What a beautiful village. It seems like it has a great energy. Quakers are good people it seems and have long history here in America with the American Revolution as well as fighting for the abolition of slavery so I’m not surprised to hear they have a heart for their workers and the community at large in an economic capacity. I’d love to see a video on those medieval buildings he had moved there are more on that Serbian Orthodox Church too.
I'll do what I can! The church sadly isn't open very often but if I can I'll go in for sure! Quakers are lovely. The area around Bournville they have done so much even to this day to keep the area lovely, I would love to see their original home in the USA!

What a lovely place, a very interesting video (I’m not a chocolate fan though😂) It made me think of port sunlight on the Wirral built by the Lever brothers (soap). One of the Levers built a replica of Liverpool castle at a place called Rivington near Chorley, Lancashire. It’s not too far from where I live. He commissioned the “Chinese gardens” up there too. All kinds of people live there these days, Bournville Trust rent homes to people - they have an incredibly long waiting list and they are homes for life. A lot of people that live in the village still have some kind of connection to Cadbury though even if it's from relatives from the past. A lot of the homes on the estate are owned now and oh boy they are expensive - they are lovely though!

My first visit to Bourneville was on a school trip to the Cadbury factory way back in the 1960's and I remember thinking then how nice the village looked from the coach. So when I was in Birmingham a couple of years ago I decided to visit the area and spent a few enjoyable hours just wandering around taking photographs. I even stopped at the bakers you featured for a coffee and a Bakewell Tart!
It's lovely isn't it that bakery? I haven't tried a bakewell tart - I will do next time I am in there :) Glad you enjoyed your return to the village, it's such a lovely place and always so busy - but calm.
I have a friend who lives in Bournville so this was fascinating to watch

I was hoping you were going to do this. I came to bournville about 25yrs ago when visiting Cadbury world and would have loved to look around the village but I was on a coach tour.
I showed my mum who is 78 your black country museum episode and she really enjoyed it, I will have to show her this one.

Hi Lucy this was fascinating thank you for sharing. I always think of the people who needed work and must of been so happy to be employed. I met Thomas Dudley once and thanked him for employing so many people ( I’m originally from Dudley ) I don’t know anything about him but I felt like I had met a celebrity because his name was important to people where I’m from. Sorry I went off on a bit of tangent but I’m sure you know what I mean. I’ve always said if I had money I would put it to good use employing those that need a leg up much like the princes trust etc today. Sorry for rambling on. Bless ya and thanks mate 🥰👍

As someone whose favourite book/movie as a child/even now was Charlie and the Chocolate factory, I was OBSESSED with this place growing up. The old factory still gives me Willy Wonka vibes to this day 😂
And besides both my Nannies it’s one of the main reasons I have such a love of food and baking.

No, it was a very popular place to work, my auntie worked there for years and she always had a big stock of Creme Eggs all year round when you couldn't get them in the shops, I used to be fascinated as she worked on Easter Eggs all year round, I just always presumed they made them just at Easter .. but no, there was a whole department :)

Another great video I remember taking our kids there about 30 years ago, on the factory tour my son loved the way every department you went through they gave you a chocolate bar a kids dream, I do not know if they still do that. The creme egg car was great.
You still see the Creme Egg car driving around occasionally .. no one takes any notice around here! I haven't been to Cadbury World myself for YEARS but I can't imagine they have stopped the chocolate .. I mean that's the whole point right ;) x
Years ago I hosted an event at ‘Saltaire’ in Bradford, Yorkshire. That’s another stunning workers village. In my neck of the woods there is Port Sunlight on the Wirral.
I really want to visit both of these, I have a friend that lives near Port Sunlight and it would make sense to go across to Saltaire too .. I just love these industrial villages with a social purpose. I believe Port Sunlight has some original cottages you can look around so I would love that!

I've always been curious about the Bournville village, as I've seen Port Sunlight village a lot. It must have been like living in luxury for the workers, compared to how they'd been used to living before. I've just Googled the dates and Port Sunlight was founded slightly before the Bournville village, but both equally fascinating.
I need to visit Port Sunlight. I have a friend who lives up there and says I can go and stay. I really want to see it too :)

What a fascinating story that of the Cadbury brothers. Not only their chocolate is great, but them: their compassion, solidarity, concern for their workers .Really great people. I love Cadbury chocolates. There is a factory here in Argentina, in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where I live, and where I send you my kind and thankful regards from.

I used to work for Cadbury's (well, actually, Cadbury Typhoo) at Bournville in the 80s-90s, so found this interesting. Even when I worked there, there was a feeling of the workers being cared for more than most other places.
There were also the gardens - separate ones for men and women, with, I was told, an underground route from the factory and under the road to the women's garden, so that the women didn't have to risk being watched by the men. The gardens are still there, though no longer segregated.
And the club was the only licensed place in the whole of Bournville that was permitted to sell alcohol.
Thanks so much for sharing that. It was such a a shame when the club burnt down several years ago. So many people relied on it as their social hub. That's really interesting about the men & women's passageways! I totally forgot it was it Cadbury, Typhoo at one point too ❤️

Yes it's a pricey area to live but they still have plenty of social housing on the site too. X
When I was about 10, I won a radio phone in competition to get to go to the Bourneville factory! I remember there was information inside about the garden village and the temperance movement etc. And that was 2004ish, so hopefully they still offer this history to the area within the experience of the factory.

Seeing those b & w photos from the late 1800's or so was very sad, I have great grandparents and their families living there at that time, what a hard life they had 😞
Going a little off topic seeing the cake shop reminded me of going to a cake shop in my childhood and my grandmother buying me Kunzel Cakes, they were amazing! 😋
Ohhhh I recreated kunzel cakes for a good friends birthday many years ago! They are lovely! The chocolate shells were hard to achieve though! I think you can still get a similar thing at Betty's in York & Harrogate x

Hey! My Dad always talked about the baths, he LOVED it, he said it was the best relaxation for a penny .. boiling hot water and sit there for as long as you like. The baths were HUGE too from photos I have seen, not like the piddly little thing in my own bathroom where I struggle to soak my knees! haha

My memory of the village is a visit in 2005. My son wasn't a year old, I can't remember exactly how old now, but I had gone as a day out for my 7 year old daughter. Somehow, I had lost his baby cup and it was a mad hot day. I couldn't find d a baby cup for love nor money in the shops there!
I was trying to teach him to drink water from a bottle, then I tried the lid.. he was soaking wet through by the time I had got about two drops of it in his mouth 😂
Poor lad had to wait until we were back on the coach and stopped at a service station where I paid an arm and a leg for a baby cup 😂
I should go back again and make a better memory haha
We always remember stressful days like that don't we? I have only been to Iron Bridge once, I was so excited but it was a bank holiday and there was no money in any of the cash machines and the museum only took cash, we sat in the carpark and the flask burst and went home sat on wet seats ... only makes us stronger eh?

What a beautiful village. It seems like it has a great energy. Quakers are good people it seems and have long history here in America with the American Revolution as well as fighting for the abolition of slavery so I’m not surprised to hear they have a heart for their workers and the community at large in an economic capacity. I’d love to see a video on those medieval buildings he had moved there are more on that Serbian Orthodox Church too.
I'll do what I can! The church sadly isn't open very often but if I can I'll go in for sure! Quakers are lovely. The area around Bournville they have done so much even to this day to keep the area lovely, I would love to see their original home in the USA!

What a lovely place, a very interesting video (I’m not a chocolate fan though😂) It made me think of port sunlight on the Wirral built by the Lever brothers (soap). One of the Levers built a replica of Liverpool castle at a place called Rivington near Chorley, Lancashire. It’s not too far from where I live.
He commissioned the “Chinese gardens” up there too.

What a beautiful village it is. Is it still only Cadbury workers who live in the village, or has it expanded?
All kinds of people live there these days, Bournville Trust rent homes to people - they have an incredibly long waiting list and they are homes for life. A lot of people that live in the village still have some kind of connection to Cadbury though even if it's from relatives from the past. A lot of the homes on the estate are owned now and oh boy they are expensive - they are lovely though!
