    I have a BK2 that I use for camping, bushcraft and general motocamping. Granted out of the box, it's not what I would call "bush ready" by any means... but once I stripped off the black coating, blued it, sharpened the spine and introduced the blade to my Worksharp, (thank you Adam for the Worksharp reviews) I couldn't ask for a better knife. I can baton, ignite charcloth off the spine with a rock, throw sparks from a ferro rod, etc. Yes, I had to put some work into it to make it "bushcraft" worthy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything... plus nothing beats a knife that you've customized yourself. That's my 2 cents. Keep up the good vid's Adam!

    For the few people who don't know.. Make sure you guys check out the Enzo Trapper. Just a hair thinner then the .125 or 1/8th that Adam loves so much (for good reason). The Trapper sits at .135 in a nice scandi. Just under 4 inches in 01 with curly birch handles and red liners and a thick leather sheath for 125??? Hard to beat. That's the knife that made me sell my BHK bushcrafter scandi. Love it

    My first "fieldcraft" knife was the Brothers of Bushcraft by TOPS. It is a little beefier than the ones you showed here but I found it works really well with a convexed edge. I've had it since it came out and after I got it, it inspired me to do bushcraft and get outdoors more.

    Great video. If you ever have a change to handle a Fallkniven f1 with its sheath, you will find that the whole unit will fit comfortably in a front suit pocket! With every knife being a compromise, this is a Swedish pilot survival knife that can also function in the city.

    That Fiddlebackforge at 8:00 is amazing. Beatiful blade!
    Althogh after some 200 dollars knifes, my 10 bucks Mora still is my go to knife. With a saw and another bigger knife or a cheap tramontina machete, 100% coverd.

    Love my Mora Robust for my back up. Fallkniven F1 has probably had the most use. Have a Scrapyard 511 that has been pretty good considering it being closer to a clip point.
    That Echo 5 looks dandy. FBF Sneaky Pete in O1 looks great. I've been wanting something this size in O1.
    Great video, Adam!

    Liking the design of your second to last knife. It looks like a more traditional bushcraft but the blade is a bit deeper which provides a bit of a guard while turning it into a knife great for food prep. Look smart.

    Regarding your comment about the Idun's lanyard hole being too small, you are right that 550 paracord would never work. But what is PERFECT for the Idun's lanyard hole is Type ONE Paracord, which is 1.85mm diameter, which is absolutely just the right size for the Idun! Paracordgalaxy has every size made: nano, micro, Type 1, 275, 325, 425, 550, 650 coreless and even 750. Most people don't realize that paracord comes in 9 sizes.

    I love your stable of knives, I don't have the Idun, instead I have the Njord, I bought out a business and this was part of the deal, for about $200.00, I'm really surprised you didn't include the Swamp Rat Ratmandu, with its choil, I can easily include it in the 4"group with its function, and the steel is awesome, but I think I found my Holy Grail of a knife, its the Busse Son of Badger, in INFI, its Sable Ground, .164 thick, its thin enough to be used as a slicer, yet tough enough to use as a real Search and Rescue/Bushcraft/Survival Knife, 4 3/4" is a perfect length for me, I have a few knives in my stable too, but so far, the S.O.B. is my favorite.

    I have a dilemma figuring out whether I should get a Genesis or a Bark River Bravo 1. I'm planning on mainly purchasing one or the other so I can be sure to have a trust worthy knife when I take my kids on a backpack camping trip this summer. Which one would you recommend? If not one of those two I was also debating between the PLSK1 or the Pathfinder Knife Shop Spirit.

    I'm jealous of Adam's awesome collection. Most of these are out of my price range at the moment but I seem to get along just fine with my Mora HD Companion, Ontario SP47Gen 2 and Bahco Laplander. These 3 tools and a Leatherman Wave work very well for me.

    You have some pretty knives. I share your preference for a cutting edge that comes all the way back to the handle, without an inch of square bar stock in between. I too have moved steadily to thinner and lighter knives. I never had the need to baton anything, or as I put it, beat my nice knife with a club.
    The one I have used most in over a half century of bushcraft is an Old Hickory 6" boning knife in a self crafted sheath. It isn't too pretty, but It has got me through Amazonian, High Sierra, Florida swamps, African bush, and a million other adventures. I have used it for hundreds of shipboard splices and lots of food prep.
    I have hand ground one down to half its blade, and am on my second. Both still take a fine edge. I don't have a knife "system" I have one good knife that does what I actually do. Yes, I have some pretty knives too, that have never seen use. But I call them what they are, boys' toys. My real knives are not pretty. If I will be around salt water, I tend to varnish the whole knife. The varnish wears off the edge, and the rest is slower to rust.
    While I won't insult someone else's opinion, I place little value on reviews of obviously unused knives, by people who obviously have spent little or no time working with knives. How many reviews have you seen, where some guy touts some gear that is still in the blister pack? Not much credibility there.

    Really like your taste in field knives and, and your explanation. But I need to ask you a question. That beautiful sheath you have on the ontario is exactly what I want. I like to have pretty knives too, but my "user" is an Ontario RBS. Its a functional knife and I don't mind beating the hell out of it. But the sheath it came in was crap. I bought a kydex for it, I won't name the outfit that made it for me, but I still had to heat it up, and re-fit it proper.
    I couldn't catch the name of the designer you mentioned. If you could, maybe you could answer me back on the maker, and their contact info. I think for a primary "user" my OKC and that sheath would be a tremendous upgrade from what I currently have.
    Thanks, great vid, well done.

    F.Y.I. Adam, since my last post, I got 4 Busse Knives, and fell in love with my Son of Badger Busse knife, 4 3/4", .164 thick, and the famous INFI Steel, now Busse came out with the Ratmandu in INFI, and I ordered it, I love my Swamp Rat Ratmandu, and because of its choil, I feel as comfortable with its 5 1/4" blade lenght, as I do using some of my 4" blades, but, the Busse Son of Badger made me find my best bushcraft knife blade size, for me, a perfect lenght bushcraft knife is 4 3^4", but as far as blade shape, my Rod Garcia Skookum is right up there, and similar to my beloved Busse's, John Bradley's "best Camp Knife", is up there with the other two, because it's Austempered and 5/32's also. I've seen this video before, but it's just like a good record, it's music to my ear's, and I will re - watch this again.

      There are quality knives, and very well made. It's funny, I got slack for too much Survive Knives and now slack for not enough. They are a little more focused on the Survival end, where I was focusing on the thinner bushcraft knives that I have been moving towards. I think the 1/8th scandi they are doing is going to be great.

    I am a bit surprised at Adam's comment regarding G10 melting for bow drillis divots whereas Micarta doesn't. Everything I have read says G10 resists heat slightly better than Micarta. I am wondeering exactly which knife he experianced this with because I would suspect it was of lower quality with more epoxy content than glass fiber. As far as I know the 2 are similar composites but micarta uses cloth rather than glass fiber.

    • @live2hunt388
      @live2hunt388 9 років тому

      Great question....im not an expert, but i would assume G-10 would be more heat resistant.

    • @sixblanc
      @sixblanc 8 років тому

      +schlooonginator I work with both G10 and micarta , i noticed SOME colored G10 (yellow specially grrr) tend to burn really quick on a sand belt, they are hard to work with as they can get burn spots very quick.. never had issues with black G10, Jade and some more.. it's more with the bright colors.. not sure why though as they seem similar. Never burned micarta if i remember correctly, but played with less variations than g10 so far .

    • @schlooonginator1227
      @schlooonginator1227 8 років тому

      Simon blanc Hmmm, that's interesting. Perhaps its really the epoxy content? I mean, G10 is essentially a micarta,just with glass fibers rather than cloth.
      Its difficult to burn glass obviously and cottons burn rather than melt (a reason they are used in areas where fire or burning resistance is required which leaves us with the glue or epoxy. I would imagine different companies use different kinds and ratios of fiber to epoxy. I am interested because I am also a bike guy and carbon fiber is the same idea and they do as much as possible to eliminate excess resin as that is what increases weight.

    I think after a certain point of quality, knives become collector items, whether they get used or not. High end knives are like sports cars.... anything after a camaro or mustang is just because you have too much money sitting still. The difference between a 100 dollar knife and a 300 dollar knife isn't worth the financial sacrifice to me. They are beautiful pieces BTW, but hobbies never less expensive the deeper into them you go. I'm going through the same process with axes.

    I ordered an Echo 5 exactly like the one in this video (BECAUSE of this video) and I have to say, Dogwood Custom Knives has the worst customer service I have ever seen. They take over a week to reply to email IF they reply at all. Not only that, but they told me it would be ready in 60-90 days and this is day 111 and I haven't heard anything from them. Day before yesterday I wrote asking why I wasn't contacted to let me know there was a delay, and when could I expect my knife, and so far - as per usual for them - no reply. They may make good knives but they have NO IDEA how to run a business.

      +RationallySkeptical While filling out the work order for your knife, I wrote the deliver date incorrectly and until seeing your email this evening, was not aware the knife was late. Since you placed your order I have hired someone to help handle these types of task, to insure this does not happen in the future. I have set aside all other work (including prep for blade show) to finish your knife as quickly as possible. I regret the delay in delivery but am flattered that you are so excited to received my work. Thank you, Dan Eastland.

      I sent another email after Dan's comment to order a second knife and not only did it take three days to get a response, despite reassurances that it would "not happen in the future" but I was told that they weren't willing to take another order from me until late June or July. My opinion of your so-called customer service has not improved. I also would like to add that I still have not received the FIRST Echo 5 I ordered, which was FOUR MONTHS AGO now.

    If nearly all of UA-cam would stop the silliness of putting a razor sharp edge on knives that should never be sharpened at such an angle, a lot of good knives wouldn't get ruined. A knife with a twenty degree bevel angle per side is just as sharp as one with a ten degree bevel angle, even if it won't shave you. Sharpness is the condition of the edge, not the bevel angle. and not whether it will of won't shave you.
    I still don't understand how of why UA-cam created this stupidity. Throughout history, a pocketknife was sharpened at fifteen degrees, a food knife at seventeen, a general purpose knife at twenty, and a sheath knife for skinning game at twenty-four to twenty-six, depending on the knife, and no one could tell the difference because they didn't shave with their knives.
    This is still true today. There is nothing you can do with a ten or eleven degree angle that doesn't have a common, specialized steel to do that thing, be it a razor, a scalpel, a dedicated small carving knife, etc. Though a pocketknife, a real pocketknife with a thin blade, will shave at fifteen degrees.
    "Razor sharp out of the box" is complete nonsense. It's understandable because very, very few on UA-cam ever used a knife with a different bevel angle, and it just seems to make sense that ten is better than twenty. But it isn't. Unless, of course, you get up and shave with your knife every morning. Or unless you don't know enough to carry a real pocketknife.
    But people pay hundreds of dollars, or more, for a knife that will, of course, be delivered razor sharp because that's what customers demand, then then ruin those knives in remarkably short time, if they use them very much.
    As far as I can tell, only Ka-Bar knows enough to sharpen a knife with the correct bevel angle. A Ka-Bar comes with a twenty degree per side angle, as it should. The funny thing is that when people pick one up they talk about how sharp it is. They're right, it is sharp. Just as sharp as the knife with the ten degree bevel. It even cuts a number of things easier and better.
    And, no, the steel type has nothing to do with it. Old steel or new "super" steel, most of which are horrible for knives, should still have the same bevel angles, which means never ten or eleven degrees.
    And who in blazes carried water stones into the woods, or isn't smart enough to know oilstones get a knife just as sharp as Waterstones? And who doesn't know that you sharpen a machete at a different angle in order to make the edge last longer. Are you really saying you make the edge last longer by making it duller, which is why you don't use a Waterstone??????

    It's a video about one guy's evolution in his own choice of knife not the latest law in what people must choose. And where did the issue of sexuality come from?? Generally, people who rant about others sexuality have issues about their own.

      Wow, you're an expert of what issues other people have, right? So far, I've never met anyone, including psychiatrists. who say people who rant about other people's sexuality have issues of their own. In fact, the opposite is most often true.

    Where are you going when you head outdoors that you are always meeting new people in the field & hanging with different people & niche groups? It sounds more like the local mall or restaurant than the wilderness. I rarely see other people when I'm out in nature & if I do it is in passing or at a distance. I don't play with them & share my toys & show off my knives.
    More to the point of this video's title: This was just some fellow showing off his shiny, expensive toys. He never so much as offered any real advice on how to choose or what to look for & why in a quality knife. A far as the leather sheaths go, I like leather too but you must live in a dry climate because they would be nothing but a bother here in the Pacific Northwest. You also made no mention about not storing your knives in their leather sheaths when not in use. I will not explain why this shouldn't be done, especially when you are risking your very expensive knives as you no doubt already know this if you own so many knives. I'm just surprised you didn't address any of the aforementioned issues in this video as per the title.

    Chop? Do you even know what a knife is for? Knives are for cutting, not slicing. And bushcraft knives should not be stainless steel at all, let alone a steel like CM 154 that chips ridiculously easy. No one who buys any of the knives you have in this video should be allowed to use the words "bushcraft" or "fieldcraft'. These knives have nothing to do with such things. They're "look at how much money I have" knives, made to show people, not to actually take into the wild. Chop? Seriously? You probably think batoning with a knife is a good thing, too.

    They're three hundred dollars overpriced. They're not as good as a dozen fifty dollar knives on the market. They are beautiful, but they are not for use, they're for pure show.
