Christians, STOP Using This Verse To Teach Praying In Tongues!!

- Опубліковано 28 чер 2024
- There is a verse in the New Testament that many charismatics and pentecostals are using to suggest that tongues is a private prayer language. This verse is ripped completely out of its context and the idea of tongues as a private prayer language is not present in this verse or chapter. This video will seek to expose this and provide several compelling reasons why this verse should no longer be used to teach on tongues as a private prayer language.

This isn't about tongues or prayer languages: it's about us being weak and the Spirit interceding for us
Amen
Weak in spirit meaning you aren't able to pray in the spirit correct?
@@lvstjonnellfaith it means you are so weak spiritually, you aren't able to even pray for yourself
Not necessarily to be weak
See there it is. When people who pray this way or rather they think they're praying. Fact is that they love to hear themselves say out loud in front of others how oh I was praying in the spirit. As if somehow everyone else is a lesser Christian. Or everyone else doesn't really have the Holy Spirit
YES! #4. I had a discipler who was a Charismatic, and we used to get into it over this verse! I was a young believer and I'd get so scared that I was missing out and I didn't have the Holy Spirit...God is SO good because He always encouraged me on to "just keep going." Just keep praying, worshipping, studying. If it's that important and true, I'll understand it later. I finally just kept going and here I am, praise Jesus! Thanks, Pastor Allen, for sharing this. Also in your book.
We ought not to glorify tongues above God, and neither should we relegate the Holy Spirit to just tongues. God is above all things, and His Holy Spirit is a person that is enabling His power and Will through us unto His full work. We must begin to see as the Lord sees. Alot of the arguments are foolishness.
Your slick but not slick enough😂
@@matoniamunroe544 Tongues is God. Because the Holy Spirit is God as Jesus is. The Holy Spirit came down in bodily form as tongues of fire and rested on Jesus. Glorifying tongues is fine because it is God and His Spirit that speaks and those tongues which glorify God.
I suffered a tragic loss two weeks ago, a loss so severe and traumatizing that I was unable to articulate what I wanted to say and ask for in prayer. As I cried, Romans 8:26-28 came to mind. It was a profound comfort for me to remember that God’s Holy Spirit could intercede for me. Now, two weeks out, I am still in shock and grief stricken, and I’m still praying with the help of God’s Holy Spirit. What an awesome God we have to help us through every aspect of our lives. And what blessing it is to know He has us firmly in His grip when we need Him most.
It’s amazing no matter how you break it down in God’s truth ppl will still hold on to their feelings. Help us all LORD we all fall short somewhere. God bless ✝️✝️✝️
Tell me about it.

True that!
Sooooo true!!! Amen!
This is a very clear teaching from Scripture that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we're too weak or befuddled to pray what we should and would.
Many years ago my church split over the issue of tongues. The tongues group said that the rest of us didn’t have the Holy Spirit because tongues were the evidence. They suggested the rest of us weren’t real Christians. So sad.
Lost a friend of 15 years over this exact thing
That's so sad!!! I didn't know these discussions could get that heated!!
Better to manifest the fruit of the Spirit than the perceived gift.
The Bible clearly tells us at 1 Corinthians 13:8 that gifts of the spirit such as tongues would CEASE! This ended when all of the apostles died by the end of the first century C.E. It was necessary when the early Christian congregation was established to show it had God’s backing.
Jesus knew this would come to an end, so the way to identify “true Christians” today is what we find at John 13:35: “By this all will know that you are my disciples-if you have love among yourselves.” Self-sacrificing love identifies true Christians, not speaking in tongues. Speaking in tongues was having the ability to speak in foreign languages, not gibberish!
Yeah and who won? Satan
Thats so sad
Ephesians 6:18 Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
But it doesn’t say language
As christians we must have complete trust in our Heavenly Father. Even as we struggle in life. As I constantly struggle to provide for my two autistic children I keep faith. Faith is all I have. It is truly the only armor against the enemy. As a single mom things are hard on me. My health is fading I suffered a heart attack two years ago and I’m battling lupus. Every month is a struggle to get by. I struggle to pay rent and struggle to buy groceries it’s disheartening. But God lifts me up everyday. He has carried me this far. No matter how hard my financial struggles are I will praise Jesus! I will keep faith because I believe that Jesus is King.
This is when the church should come to your aide to assist, if nothing else with groceries.

Same here.
These things do exist for real but I do agree with the man-made expectations part
@@unashamed2433 Yeah they exist and I'll never deny them, but I was often in a position where I essentially had to make up experiences because I was being pressured to have them. From your teaching I feel so much better knowing that the Holy Spirit knows what is in my heart and representing my feelings to our God for help and guidance.
This is a VERY specific answer to my prayer about this exact issue! I asked God for clarity and truth about praying in tongues and here it is. Praise God!
You honestly think this video exists because you asked god for it? Could you be any more self-centered?
Facts. I never saw it this way till I took my Pentecostal deception goggles off a few months ago. And when I was reading, for the first time I saw it as it was written. Plus, she will dreams of things to be, things that are yet to happen and those things will come to pass just like she seen them in her dreams.

It is very sad to see how many charismatic Bible teachers here on UA-cam use this verse incorrectly to teach tongues. It's very sad. This is a promise for ALL believers and, as I stated, this passage is not talking about tongues at all.
@grizzlybearnomar They are following the bible which states that tongues are a gift from the Holy Spirit. They are obediently accepting the gift. I will send the spirit of truth who will lead you into all truth. People who receive the Holy Spirit are lead into all truth and speak in tongues and prophesy. If you have not do not speak in tongues and prophesy by the laying on of hands, you have not received the Holy Spirit. Acts 19:2-6
You are speaking against the Holy Spirit. Why do risk blaspheming him (a sin that will never be forgiven) when you clearly have no understanding of how the Holy Spirit works or why Jesus would baptize use in the Holy Spirit and fire. Speaking in tongues is not an experience. It is completely supported by the bible. What will I do? I will pray in the Spirit (tongues) and I will pray with understanding (native tongue). 1Corinth14:15 God is Spirit, his worshipers MUST worship him in the Spirit (tongues) and in truth, for this is the type of worshiper God seeks. John 4:23 and 24 Read the bible before you try to school someone about experiences or the truth of the word.
@@Richrdm wow. You have a lot to learn. Firstly you don't even know what "The sin against the Holy Spirit" means and why Jesus said it can never be forgiven. That was for pharasees who knew the Law was being fulfilled in Jesus, who knew that he was The Messiah, who saw him do miracles and yet they deliberately chose to blasphemem saying he was demon possessed. "Praying in truth and in Spirit" doesn't mean praying in tounges. I've read those those verses. I don't want to argue but with Love please go read. Tounges = language. Stop defending the idea of "heavenly language". Even on 1Cor13v1 Paul was exaggerating to make point about LOVE.

Truth is not a democracy.
Yes just so sad about degradation of Faith. So his limited knowledge make them don't believe it, the more he study bible not make him believe it. The impact is he try to make the bible according to the reality and situation not the opposite to make our situation and life according to bible 🙏. So if all peoples agree with that, so they will reject the Gift and lost it.
For Facts! When you know you know. When God convicts you of Truth for many of us we cannot conform to fit in or not speak up to what we know to be true. It is biblical to be gentle when teaching what one may oppose. At the end of the day we will all stand before God and no one should be mad that he is studying and teaching the same way they are promoting their error regarding teaching tongues, people not Spirit filled when they don't speak tongues, what exactly tongues is, etc. The strong focus on tongues and not salvation is what keeps me focused on true KINGDOM agenda. If you do not do the things that Jesus said you would do if you believe then either you don't believe or He is a liar. Which is more likely?
@lilchristuten7568 God is sovereign, which means that He has absolute power with or without me. That said, I ought to pursue a relationship with Him and let Him use me any way that he sees fit.
Translation: I don't have to force God's prophetic word written in Mark 16:17, as God, being sovereign, already has it orchestrated. It's therefore wise for me to be in concert with faith and relationship in Him. As it is written, many will say on judgment, I prophesied, cast out demons, preached, played instruments, sang, and spoken in tongues in your name. God will say to some. Depart from me, you are a worker of iniquity. I never knew you. God, who knows all things, knows the difference between an idolatrous heart versus intimacy. Translation: I don't know you being in to me see. Get it? God knows intimacy versus those who are more in love with spiritual power than they are in the power of the cross.
God has it correct in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ because that's exactly what the human heart needs. A death, burial, and resurrection in His word and in Jesus.
Lastly, if we have not "love," then the foundation of the faith is lost. We need to sharpen each other in the correlation between love and God, as love is the gravity that this faith is physic too.
The American church skipped the main course of Christianity to chew on appetizers. That's called bad spiritual priorities.
The gift of Jesus Christ is where God dropped the mic and will leave all of mankind bowing, saying that He is Lord.

God is sovereign yes, but no that does not mean that He has absolute power. If it did then no one would go to hell because with His absolute power He would cause everyone to believe in Him.

The use of the original language is critical to understanding the scriptures. Words change meaning over time, anyone can make a passage fit their purpose by using their modern definition of a word. @@lovelyjanecohen2637Whoa, let’s go back to the scriptures. Don’t be children in understanding, but be adults. Put away the things of childhood and grow up. Don’t live your whole life on milk, rather, develop understand so you can digest meat. Don’t substitute leading for reading, because the heart is deceitful above all things.
Who is the Author of the scriptures? How can you discard understanding what we know comes from the Spirit and say you follow the Spirit? That’s not obedience; it’s tempting God.
Thank you for sharing this with us, it helped me a lot☺🙏🙏
Brother Allen...excellent work in articulating this aspect of the scripture that is usually misinterpreted. As we say in Trinidad "you was spot on".
Great video! You did a great job explaining those verses. 👏 👏
You really did a great job of explaining that. As someone who grew up in a radical charismatic church during my childhood and teenage years, this is a great encouragement to really read and study the Bible contextually. Instead of leaving the church life altogether, I always knew that reading and studying the Bible properly is an important key to making sense out of scripture that is not easily understood, especially in today's modern time. Roman 8:26 is indeed often used as "proof" of a "prayer language" in charismatic churches. But what I have also noticed is that as soon as one tries to correctly interpret or counter-argue Romans 8:26, the charismatics always immediately pull out 2 Timothy 3:5 ("having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." ) as a "weapon" to silence the person, so that no one dares to interpret the passage correctly. I've heard many charismatic say, if you don't believe that Romans 8:26 is "a prayer language", or "the gift of tongues", then you are apparently "denying the power (of the holy spirit) thereof". I know that this passage too is often taken out of context by charismatics, but how would you proceed or counter-argue that? I have some family members who are still relatively strongly charismatically influenced and sometimes there is a very tense atmosphere in family discussions when it comes to such topics. Could you perhaps also do a series of topics like this that addresses precisely these issues?
Have you studied the part of the Bible where god condones owning humans as slaves and explicitly gives people permission to beat them? Do you agree with that part? Should people be able to own other humans as property?
2Tim.3:5 has nothing to do with speaking in tongues it's speaking about having power to overcome sin
@@betty3107 Exactly! Which is why it doesn't make sense from the charismatics to use these passages as "counterargument" regarding the use of the gift of tongues.
@@josuam5502 Agreed 💯
Thank you, brother. You gave a good clarification on this issue.
Thank you, Allen, very good points. Appreciate going through the topic.
I grew up in a Pentecostal Charismatic church and was taught that tongues are the evidence of the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:3-4. When I attended what they called “Tarrying” service back in the day, where you say “ Hallelujah” a thousand times, the church Mother’s have to hear you speak in tongues to affirm that you have the Holy Spirit . 🙄Now I know that this is not 100% true. Only you know that you have the Holy Spirit! Thank you making this make more sense! 🙏🏾
Me too! They would spin us around and tell us to say Jesus or Hallelujah real fast to where you are spitting and foaming at the mouth. I remember I got dizzy and fell. As I tried to get up, the guy that was spinning me said " No let him stay down, its the Holy Spirit". I responded " No man, Im dizzy". lol Sad thing is most do it with good intentions, but good intentions does not equal righteousness.
😂 What!? This sounds ridiculous! 😂
How do you know you have the Holy Spirit? Acts 19:2-6
Thank you so much for explaining so well, man of God , may God continue to use you to help people come to know God's words of truth in His Holy word (Bible).
Thank you Allen may God continue to anoint you to speak His truth
Thank you Mr. Allen for your deep and logical explanation..I agree with what you said..
Speaking in tongues is the ability to speak a recognizable language without prior knowledge of that language. If you don’t have an interpreter, then you’re instructed not to use different languages.
thank u, Allen. This is so true, bible-based truth. Let scripture interpret itself.
Amen... the word of God is already blessed
I've been so blessed watching your lessons. No, they're not just videos, they are teachings. God bless your heart and ministry!
Well taught Allen. came to this video from Isaiah Salvidar's response to your video about why you stopped speaking in tongues. Thank you for caring about context in biblical interpretation. 👏🤝
Paul also said, forbid not to speak in tongues. How do you handle that?
No response in 4 months. As a quote from a Jack Nicholson movie. " You can't handle the truth."
I felt moved to respond to you. Historically, the church in Corinth was quite diverse, having people from different parts of the world. Paul was addressing the speaking of foreign languages with no interpretation. He is clarifying what he am said in the beginning of 1 Corinthians 14, he is not forbidding the speaking of tongues as long as there's interpretation
What I always wonder about the gift of tongues is, where are all the interpreters? I'm not sure about angelic languages and tongues in that sense as I don't speak in tongues myself. But we never hear of interpretations of tongues, but so many seems to speak in tongues.
Thank you for the teaching brother Allen.
Thank you for this video. This brings so much of clarity
I happily have been given the gift of tongues and yet have avoided misinterpreting this verse. Praise God!
Nice, so you've been able to supernaturally speak a foreign language for the purpose of sharing the Gospel? Was there an interpreter there or was God using you in front of native speakers?
@@six_twentythree That's your interpretation of tongues, my brother, and as you know, not every believer subscribes to it. Given that this is not an essential doctrine, I think we can all respect people's position on this controversial subject. Btw, I share Allen's take on Rom 8:26 but I believe there is such a thing as being baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
@@py20 yep I do too, except that tongues isn’t gibberish, it’s the speaking of a foreign language supernaturally for the purpose of sharing the Gospel. Still happens today! Gibberish isn’t tongues.
ppl like you don't have the gift. lying is a sin!
@@six_twentythree Respectfully again, that's your interpretation.
As a person who recently received the gift of praying in tongues, I started to watch this video, but the Holy Spirit told me to stop, since I struggle with a bit of doubt it is not good for me to listen to this. This verse came to me, But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, since you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God.” Matthew 22:29. -NASB. How did I get the gift? I asked for it. Seek and you will find. God Bless.
Thank you for that Alan. It is indeed a most beautiful promise
I truly gain a better understanding of this verse. Thank you.
Wow great break down! Context is so important! I have this discussion a lot about tongues having coming from a Pentecostal Church.. it’s just never felt right hearing people make unintelligible sounds.. then after studying the Bible especially Cor 14 I knew in my heart it was wrong .. but as you said it’s not a salvation issue, but it is one that is misunderstood and brings confusion among believers.. and clearly Paul tells us our God is not a God of confusion, so it must be false! Great video thanks for sharing 🙏🏻🧔🏼♀️🧔🏿♀️🧔🏾♀️🧔🏻♀️🧔🏽♀️
Whew! Glory to God.Thank you, Brother Allen, for such prolific, powerful, crystal clear teaching. My heart raced with every drop of biblical truth proceeding from your mouth. I am pausing right now to give thanks and to pray for YOU!!!
Thank you for this brother Allen.
I believe you are right on this one. Thanks for sharing. I see the 3 groaners; Creation, We(believers), and The Spirit!
I love your videos; you're so spiritually wise and you're not afraid to call out what needs to be called out. Thanks for the lessons of the languages I never knew.
I really hope and pray that you haven’t stopped praying for the gift of tongues. If and when it happens…. it will be supernatural and glorious. You will know the power of God when it falls upon you…..
I’ll look forward to that video….
With all due respect, the Bible doesn't teach that we are to ask God to give us additional spiritual gifts. According to 1 Corinthians 12:7 11, it is the Holy Spirit who distributes the gifts to us AS HE WILLS. So, I appreciate your comment, but it is not biblical to ask God for spiritual gifts.
Brother Allen, thank you for this message. I will share it.
Allen I have been studying Exodus and I watched your video series on the old testament tabernacle and God has really blessed me through it. I would just like to thank you for that series thank you so much 🙏
That video also helped me.
Gotta be honest, I'm kinda tired of the tongues debate from both sides.. if someone wants to express themselves with or without tongues it shouldn't matter. The only thing that matters is coming to God with faith, which both sides do. Why do so many care about how others express their faith?
Exactly! Thank you!
Allen used to fake speaking in tongues so he thinks everyone faking … the same way Justin love to call every new prophets fake … they are definitely speaking partly from traumatic experiences… I believe that charismatics have abusée of the gifts but the real thing do exist .
“For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.”
1 Corinthians 14:2 NASB1995
Curious to see your explanation for this verse👀
The context is “in church,” where the gifts are given for edifying others (chapter 12) and are motivated by love for others (chapter 13). How does 14:2 justify wasting others’ time with unproductive self aggrandizement?
@@ricksonora6656what I’m arguing is that he seems to say there is no gift of tongues that is not the gift of suddenly speaking a different language. This verse is clearly refuting that. Many here seem to not realize that this verse exists and is clearly not about tongues being a clear language.
Not arguing about the gifts proper use
@@Faber-cator
It sounds like you think Paul suggests not to speak on tongues ? Or am I getting that wrong because he wishes that everybody would speak in tongues though prophecy is more edifying to the body where you are right. @@Faber-cator
@@Faber-cator “Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.”
1 Corinthians 14:5 NASB1995
They always ignore this one. I'd like to see this entire chapter speaking on tongues explained away as well because in or out of context it still refutes that tongues are only a language. Thank you for pointing this out!
A great lesson brother! Liked and shared! 🙂
Wow! Very well put. Thanks so much!
Tongues is of the Holy Spirit. There are different types of tongues and they don't all sound the same. To say you don't believe in tongues is to say you don't believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. Tongues is scriptural. It's the evidence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said those who believe in Him will speak in new tongues. If you are teaching that tongues is not of God you are teaching lies and the Holy Spirit is not in you. I speak in tongues when I worship the Lord. So I know from first hand that tongues is of God. Read 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and 14 it's all about speaking in tongues.
Though no one has ever explained it to me, I have always interpreted it the way you explained it. I am glad to hear it explained properly, thank you
Amen ! Amen ! Amen ! Brother Allen, and God bless you.❤❤❤🙏🙏
Absolutely correct! Good teaching.
I didn't know that people used this verse as an explanation of speaking in tongues.
Mr. Parr, It is bothersome for you to say the Charasmatics misinterpret this verse (stated as fact), and then say you will tell us what you believe it means (opinion). Praise God for grace...no of us has it 100% right on this side of heaven.
Thank you for your ministry.
Understood. I was very careful to say that "many" Charismatics and Pentecostals (not all) misinterpret this verse. When I watch UA-cam videos of premiere charismatic leaders, they almost always use this verse to support the idea of praying in tongues. I get so frustrated because as I shared in this video, this is taking this verse completely out of context.
Definitely the wrong verse to use for tongues but I used to think praying with tongues was fake until God gave that to me. I love being able to pray in tongues privately or silently because it is a great way to focus on God and His will when I am distracted.
Just curious, how do you view now the verses you used to use to refute tongues?
@@wenhari06 I never really used to refute tongues with scripture because I think the verses are weak for that argument, especially 1 Cor 13. I just thought it was something Charismatics did to fit in. What I did not understand is how truly beneficial the gift is in our walk.
@@matheu1971 Sure. Thanks for your honest response
@@matheu1971There is not one Scripture that supports a personal prayer language.
@pappap1702 I have brothers on both sides of this debate. I am at peace with my interpretation of 1 Cor 14 and at peace with those that think praying in tongues is fake or just babbling.
Thankyou for this explanation❤
I don’t usually comment on videos but your channel with actual biblical references thank you brother
Thank you for this. My question has always been: since speaking in tongues is one of the specific gifts (the least, according to Paul) given to
specific people by God, why do Charismatic people try to teach others how to do it?? If it was given by God they don’t need to be taught.
Not all Charismatic people try to teach others. Don't generalize, that is not fair
We don’t teach people how to do it (at least in the churches I have been). We believe that it is the Holy Spirit that gives you the gift. Before speaking in tongues, I was making fun of people doing so . Then one day something happened to me during a prayer meeting, I fell and started speaking in tongues … no nobody touched me, it was all by the Spirit and I speak in tongues to this day .
I just made a similar comment. The Bible says the greatest gift is the gift of prophesying. With that being said, why do so many apostolic/pentecostal churches teach that tongues is the key to salvation? I honestly believe this false teaching is steering people astray. Yes, tongues is a gift, but many apostolic like to reference the book of Acts. Yet it says no where in Acts that speaking in tongues is needed to be saved. I have spoken with many apostolic Christian’s on this topic and none of them could explain why they believe that teaching. I also believe they are misinterpreting the books of Acts as well.
@@cakebytheocean8056 have been to many charismatic churches and circles and I have seen no one preaching that speaking in tongues or it is even a sign of salvation … I think those are fringe and extreme movement that do not represent us.
@@unashamed2433 every pentecostal/apostolic Christian i have spoken with says you need to speak in tongues in order to get into heaven. Many of them believe this. Especially the pentecostal churches in the south.
Better to manifest the fruit of the Spirit than the perceived gift.
Thank you so much for this. The Lord keep blessing for this great work you are doing Brother. Allen.
Thank you so much for this!!!! ✨
I was born again at the age of 16 and once baptized with the Holy Spirit i began speaking in tongues. This was many decades ago. This is a spiritual gift all that born again are entitled to. When i spend time praying in tongues, things move in my life. Believe what you wish, i will continue to pray in tongues. See Derek Prince for how and more Biblical truth.
The problem with putting your experiences over scriptures is that it makes the scriptures contradict, and people need to stop doing that.
Amen!
Remember Paul said that greater is he who prophesied that he who speaks in tongues, and he wasn't talking about a man who prophesied and speaks in tongues at the same time, he was distinguishing gifts one having a certain gift is greater than the other.
@@calvinospina7307 I did not come here to debate scripture. I was led here to give a message on what you are entitled to. Only you can choose to receive it.
Lord have mercy
Interpretations can be so entrenched that even sound expository teaching like this doesn't break through. Tongues has/is often taught as a salvific factor, or to treat those that don't speak as lesser Christians without any power, etc, etc. Before getting good teaching, I remember being scared to death that I was outside the Kingdom because I did not speak. I appreciate your study and teaching. 14:35 "The Holy Spirit has GOT YOU!"
Amazing program. I highly recommend it!
Thank you for this Allan. I unfortunately grew up feeling I wasn't saved unless I spoke in tounges. So I would mimic my mom as she spoke in tongues thinking that is what I was supposed to do. I learned through brothers like you later that this isn't a gift for everybody.
It is a gift for everyone. Read Acts 2:14-19
