You are awesome, I've been taking martial arts for 7 years now and all of these videos are making me want to get into all of the tougher kicks. I just want to say thanks for posting.
Very nice tutorial. I've searched many Raiz tutorial but most "teachers" seems like to put their skill & show in the front row - and forget to TEACH while... This guy here is trustworthy IMO and I will start to learn from him. Thank you! Like!
David thank you so much man! 🙏🏽 My newer tutorials have so much better information so definitely browse my tutorial playlists! Seeing comments like this motivate me.
Thanks Epic! Best tutorial I have seen. Im going into my 11th year of Isshinryu Karate, and this, as well as the other kicks in your tutorial have taken my martial artss to a completely new level. You are the man!
Awesome, was hesitant to watch an old tutorial but it was very good, thanks for all the repeated and slowed down demonstrations, and comparing it to the aerial really helped.
Absolutely Ethan! I'm really glad that my old scrolls can still teach a new soul. Feel free to share this tutorial because not many people remember my teachings and I feel like I have a gold mine of knowledge just sitting here on my channel waiting to be discovered.
Hey Kyle, I've learned a lot from your tutorials (like Corks, Waffles, Cast Aways etc.) but for some reason, I just have a really hard time getting the Raiz down. Every time I go into it, I go horizontal instead of vertical/diagonal. It feels cool when I'm in the air, but as I land it I have more downward momentum in my body and I can't swing my leg through into a combo. Any suggestions? I'll send a video if you want.
I've looked at this tutorial a few times, and I could do it almost on the third attempt. Thank you very much! But a few weeks training is Raiz fine! I hope.
thanks for this one epic! really helped me! im gunna start on my technique today thanks man, and also guys notice that when he demos in side angle u see his head spot the ground as he is whipping the left leg keep that in mind
Nice tutorial and I like the way you have shown multiple angles, that really helps. I have a question, can you do a swingthrough to gainer off the end of your raiz? When I finish my raiz I always seem to have to heavily plant my right foot on the ground to stop myself overbalancing (as I see you do in your raizes) which stops a swingthrough from happening. Have you any tips for how to do the move so you land in a way so you are able to do a swingthrough? Cheers
Hey Epic! First of all, I love all of your videos, and I need some advice. Right now, I'm able to do a flawless standing back tuck and also a sideflip, just like YOU taught me :). I'm thinking this move is kind of like a combination of the two. My confidence level is high, so should I try it considering my abilities? Thanks!
b-twist is a butterfly kick with a full twist. If you get really drunk, you could consider a raiz an upside down butterfly kick. Raiz is a tornado kick laid back. a lot.
For freerunning, try to learn frontflips and backflips. Sideflips are also really easy. If you want to learn tricking, start with simple hook kicks, and tornado kicks, and then go from there!
@dixsley it doesn't matter if you're right handed or left handed, it only matters if you're right or left footed. i ambidextrous and i tried the sideslip the opposite way, but i fail because i am left footed :)
some good tricks to start with are: aerial, 540 kick, 360 hook, double leg, b-kick/b-twist, and backflip. u dont really need all these when you get into tricking but u need them eventually. u can find tutorials for all of them on youtube.
I Just learnt the Raiz yesterday at a tricking class with jono wong:) I found it quit scary at first but I got the hang of it in 15 minutes because I have already learnt the Aerial by myself. I will be making my first Raiz video today:) yay
Try the Butterfly Twist as well, you go half upside down to be fair cos it's a spin but it looks so cool, I got it a few days ago and it's my favourite by far :)
Epic on the Riaz what kick do you recommend or you like to do when come out of it? I am putting together a series of kicks so far i got my first combo. your input is appreciated
I agree. I'm 115 kg - and I can do a butterfly kick pretty ok. :) I'm a beginner though. Hehe, my parents were really surprised. I guess the hardest thing is to let go of those "barriers" which reside in one's mind. But it's all about confidence.
Are you using your opposite foot than the one you're used to aerial on? Because I kick back in an aerial with my left foot and kick in a tornado with my left too
HEy guys!!! I would LOVE to do this sport....just looks awesome and u get body control and so on but I don't know where to practice!! :'( There's nothing like a team around here and i can't get time to train in gyms, so my questions are: how did u start?? with what trick did u start? and did u have someone to show u the tricks and teach them to you?
For me just jumping into it with the spin didn't give me enough momentum or height. So if anyone else is having an under rotation problem try a little skip to get you moving. I was getting close without it and then i tried and now i'm getting much closer. Just a little more refining and practice.
Man this stuff is so cool. But I got a question: what would you call these trick moves? Like Aerials, Raizes, 540 kicks, tornado kicks, Side Kick, Butterfly Kick, etc etc. Does it fall under some sort of category like "Martial Arts trick moves"? Or is it taken from a bunch of different martial arts and there's really no name for them? Reason I ask is because I'm an animator and I would very much like to look up different trick moves like this but I don't know what keywords to use. Thanks ^__^
One way to think raiz is that you do "flashkick" or actually it's in most cases it's ambi gainer flash after turning 180 on cheat setup. I personally don't like them as much as fully inverted raiz where you're going for an ambi aerial/gumbi without hands but if you're twisting while doing this it's cheat 720 twist aka 540 twist.
The thing i like about free running is its one pf those things that you need to stay in shape for. Theres a parkour/free running community in houston i just gotta find it...
hey i've gotta question can u kinda send me ur tutorials because i would like to put them on my ipod, so when i'm training i can watch them?? btw very nice tutorials
@AfroPK lol, i did.... turned out okay, but when i go upside down, i don't really do the flash-kick...Just a back tuck. So i can only do it parallel to the ground for now... Practice makes perfect!
@tzoompy In order to combo you just need to practice. If you want to backhand spring to back flip then practice backhand spring to backhand springs. For cartwheel to side flip practice cartwheel to jump then cartwheel to high cartwheel. But sooner or later you will have to try the combo you want to do
Hey epic great vid. I need some pointers for the raiz. I can do a tornado perfectly and i want to try a raiz. For some one who has never attempted a raiz what should i try???
how hard is this trick cause im looking for new tricks to learn and i allready know some basics like the backflip webster to a small downhill and a b-kick so how hard is this?it looks quite easy but i dont really know... so what do you think?
So is a raiz like a no handed round off sort of I mean I know that u have to turn a little differently but as a gymnast it helps a lot if I think of it like that.. Is this wrong??
Great tutorial, as always! Just one minor problem, the "R" in Raiz is pronounced like an "H" (HAI-IZ). Like saying "Hi" then "Ease" put together. My Capoeira skills may only be 3 months old, but I can pronounce the portugese language pretty well. Just a friendly tip!
So I can do it, and it looks very similar to how its done in this video, but like Epic, I'm landing with my chest down which makes it hard to swing through. How do I keep my chest up and swing through?
my only problem with learning all these basic moves is that my directions, spins, swing throughs, and kick are all mixed up. i cant keep one direct motion cause im used to spinning one direction but my kicks and spins are opposite from it. if you understand what im trying to say.
ok thanks heaps, I am just having this problem of getting over the fear so I was kind of hoping this would be like my progression to make it easier lol
Whatever is easy for you to control. start with the BASICS. things that don't require leaving the ground like a cartwheel, roundoff, gumbi, Au Batido. you can move onto the tornado kick and things like that and then progress.
A raiz which leads to better and easier swingthroughs is to think of it like a gumbi with no hands.... my friend learned raiz this way sstibilj10 and his raiz came out beautifully... like even scotty skelton was jealous and you know how good scotty is :)...
man all that happens when i try to d othis is i do this is i land on my butt but then i tried pushign off with my leg more for hieght but then i land like crouched on my feet and most of the time i just end up doing a front handspring. any tips?
Hey man, no to offend you in any way, but you still need to improve you raiz. I think you probably already did, coz this tut has 1,5 year ;) But for the others - he said its a tornado with aerial - its true in some way, but the key is 'aerial' - in aerial you do something like 180twist (you start forward and land backward) - you land your raizes after 90 degree of that spin, your hips are turned wrong way for good swings. And you should start with your front leg facing forward, not side. :)
hey i really love this, and tricking ! but well i'm a beginner... i can do front flip, back flip , back-hand-spring, and the wheel. i train on the side flip . please tell me how must i defeat my fear of this... i can't combo them. i can't do the cardwheel with sideflip, or the backhand spring with backflip.. i don't know whats rong, i really want it, but it dosint manage to come out i fear... i have where to train, gym place. please explain me :( thx
my first trick was a tornado kick. its a super fun simple move to learn and its pretty bad ass because it will help you with lots of other moves (: heres a link to my tutorial
I love going through your videos, one year at a time, and seeing how much you've changed.
Tell me about it.
You are awesome, I've been taking martial arts for 7 years now and all of these videos are making me want to get into all of the tougher kicks. I just want to say thanks for posting.
2019 - like from Russia! Watched this like 10 years ago, now in recommendations ♥
Very nice tutorial. I've searched many Raiz tutorial but most "teachers" seems like to put their skill & show in the front row - and forget to TEACH while... This guy here is trustworthy IMO and I will start to learn from him. Thank you! Like!

Nice narration. I am used to have problem no raiz. But I will try it tonight see if I could nail it.
Thank you.
thanks for this one epic! really helped me! im gunna start on my technique today thanks man, and also guys notice that when he demos in side angle u see his head spot the ground as he is whipping the left leg keep that in mind

This is weird but what I was actually impressed with was how fluid his hook kick was
Hey Epic! First of all, I love all of your videos, and I need some advice. Right now, I'm able to do a flawless standing back tuck and also a sideflip, just like YOU taught me :). I'm thinking this move is kind of like a combination of the two. My confidence level is high, so should I try it considering my abilities? Thanks!
i was trying new tricks at the weekend and i learnt this not really knowing what it was
but now i have watched this i know what i am doing :D
@Jus275 I don't have one myself but they are actually a really simple trick. Just drill your cartwheels on both sides.
your tutos are wondeful!!!! I've dl all and i'll train when the weather'll be better. Thanks...
Everything about this kick reminds me of the b.kick, when in slow motion you see how simple it is.
b-twist is a butterfly kick with a full twist. If you get really drunk, you could consider a raiz an upside down butterfly kick.
Raiz is a tornado kick laid back. a lot.
For freerunning, try to learn frontflips and backflips. Sideflips are also really easy. If you want to learn tricking, start with simple hook kicks, and tornado kicks, and then go from there!
yes, and you need strong ankles. jumping is only part of the movement. is your body conditioning that is going to bring you through the movements
@dixsley it doesn't matter if you're right handed or left handed, it only matters if you're right or left footed. i ambidextrous and i tried the sideslip the opposite way, but i fail because i am left footed :)
i did this wile watch'n it on my wii first time i saw it feels very cool to pull off great tut. one of the best ive seen and ive seen a lot of them...
U can also train it with a table or block... roll over the object and it will get you more familiar with the motion in air...worked for me anyway
when you explained it with the aerial analogy at the end, that's how i learned it :)
Should I learn to do this trick on my trampoline before ?
Hey Kely, i love ur videos. and i would like to do these stuff where is the best place to learn and try ?
some good tricks to start with are:
aerial, 540 kick, 360 hook, double leg, b-kick/b-twist, and backflip. u dont really need all these when you get into tricking but u need them eventually. u can find tutorials for all of them on youtube.
I find a Hook-kick into the move helps me produce some good momentum and gives a good set up for this move.
It looks really good, but when you can get that leg straight, it will be visually stunning. Keep workin' on it!
This is kinda like an upside-down butterfly kick. What if you punched your armpit in the air to do a twist? Would it be considered a Raiz Twist?
Epic on the Riaz what kick do you recommend or you like to do when come out of it? I am putting together a series of kicks so far i got my first combo. your input is appreciated
Thanks Epic i landed my first raiz today. gonna start working on raiz ST slant gainer
@HerrAmold no problem. thank you for informing me of your situation. everyone in the world could always use some information.
I agree. I'm 115 kg - and I can do a butterfly kick pretty ok. :) I'm a beginner though. Hehe, my parents were really surprised. I guess the hardest thing is to let go of those "barriers" which reside in one's mind. But it's all about confidence.
thanks man, demonstrations in this video helped me understand it!
I swear your vids are really helpfull 5/5 I have learnt it thanks :)
Are you using your opposite foot than the one you're used to aerial on? Because I kick back in an aerial with my left foot and kick in a tornado with my left too
HEy guys!!!
I would LOVE to do this sport....just looks awesome and u get body control and so on but I don't know where to practice!! :'(

how did u start??
with what trick did u start?
and did u have someone to show u the tricks and teach them to you?
really good tutorial, i got a questiong. Does momentum really import for the raiz?
For me just jumping into it with the spin didn't give me enough momentum or height. So if anyone else is having an under rotation problem try a little skip to get you moving. I was getting close without it and then i tried and now i'm getting much closer. Just a little more refining and practice.

Practice makes perfect!
You make it look so easy. everytime i do it, it looks dumb haha. does flexibility matter with this trick?
Hey Epic!
Are the fundementals of an aerial needed? Recommended? I have the tornado kick down, but not the aerial.
@tzoompy In order to combo you just need to practice. If you want to backhand spring to back flip then practice backhand spring to backhand springs. For cartwheel to side flip practice cartwheel to jump then cartwheel to high cartwheel.
But sooner or later you will have to try the combo you want to do
Thanks all i need to do is spot the ground and extend my leg a lil more this really help thanks
I think i did this a long time ago by accident. Cool tutorial Epic!
What should be the first trick I learn. I know a lot on my trampoline but u dont k.ow what I should try on the ground yet. any pointers?
Hey epic great vid. I need some pointers for the raiz. I can do a tornado perfectly and i want to try a raiz. For some one who has never attempted a raiz what should i try???
how hard is this trick cause im looking for new tricks to learn and i allready know some basics like the backflip webster to a small downhill and a b-kick so how hard is this?it looks quite easy but i dont really know... so what do you think?
Did you mention about the shoulder. Cause I think that's pretty important. Good video though. I'm gonna make some tutorials this summer. :D
So is a raiz like a no handed round off sort of I mean I know that u have to turn a little differently but as a gymnast it helps a lot if I think of it like that.. Is this wrong??
i did one, BUT i don't arch my back and make it look kool? i cant do it either even when i try
Great tutorial, as always! Just one minor problem, the "R" in Raiz is pronounced like an "H" (HAI-IZ). Like saying "Hi" then "Ease" put together. My Capoeira skills may only be 3 months old, but I can pronounce the portugese language pretty well. Just a friendly tip!
small question, do you takeoff on the same leg you would take off on an aerial from?
@epic1 can you swing through a raiz yet? this is from 2008 so I'm guessing you can. nice tutorial btw :D
So I can do it, and it looks very similar to how its done in this video, but like Epic, I'm landing with my chest down which makes it hard to swing through. How do I keep my chest up and swing through?
This has helped mee soooooo much!
Looks soo simple-but yet SOOO SICKK!!
my only problem with learning all these basic moves is that my directions, spins, swing throughs, and kick are all mixed up. i cant keep one direct motion cause im used to spinning one direction but my kicks and spins are opposite from it. if you understand what im trying to say.
ok thanks heaps, I am just having this problem of getting over the fear so I was kind of hoping this would be like my progression to make it easier lol
Hey, I keep doing a barrel roll instead. Do you have advise for that?
Your tutorial helped me! Thank you ! )
Im really scared to do a backflip any suggestions on how to overcome this fear?
Hey Kyle, can I ask you a question regarding hook kicks?
Whatever is easy for you to control. start with the BASICS. things that don't require leaving the ground like a cartwheel, roundoff, gumbi, Au Batido. you can move onto the tornado kick and things like that and then progress.

That grass looks so good.
man u rock! love ur tutorials!
also how do you get your slow mo's so smooth, are you using a camera that can shoot with high fps, or is it all done in post?
yes this ia good tutorial with a really tight explenation
this IS the way to do a raiz
grats !
Hey Epic! When i'm trying to practice the raiz, it feels like im just doing a 180 turn and then doing a backflip 360. Is that normal?
Imo you should swing the leading leg higer and keep it straight.. Makes it look better.
i have a question.. if you do a raiz isn't hard to swing true if you land on your kicking leg?
thanx dude helped a lot keep doing the vids
Hey man, no to offend you in any way, but you still need to improve you raiz. And you should start with your front leg facing forward, not side. :)
@DMTwannaB he does tricking, freerunning, parkour. the raiz is mostly a tricking move
I love the raiz when u do it it feels as if you are flying. I love epics and prodigy ( Jeremy Marinas) Raiz... They are so Floaty xD.
Does this help with the B twist? Looks like it would.
hey i really love this, and tricking ! but well i'm a beginner... i can do front flip, back flip , back-hand-spring, and the wheel. i train on the side flip . please tell me how must i defeat my fear of this... i can't combo them. i can't do the cardwheel with sideflip, or the backhand spring with backflip.. i don't know whats rong, i really want it, but it dosint manage to come out i fear... i have where to train, gym place. please explain me :( thx
Would it help to learn an aerial before trying this?
once again man this tutorial helped me i need the raiz thanks to you man thats possible haha thanks epic once again lol
ive been trying this trick out for a couple months and i just cant get it... could you explain it better? im not really getting the concept. Thanks
your tutorials rocks...!
@ adamh0963
I guess you are referring to 武術 (WuShu),
which is Chinese for "Martial Arts".
Hey Epic, could you tell me which trick is slightly less difficult then the raiz? I can almost land it good
i'm kind of a big guy..i mean i've been told how to do a raiz a couple times so figured i'd try it..let me know what i can do to fix it.
my first trick was a tornado kick. its a super fun simple move to learn and its pretty bad ass because it will help you with lots of other moves (: heres a link to my tutorial
i finally tried this today feeling good about trying it and then WHAM! face first into the ground
Hey Epic. Can you help me? Everytimes I am trying to do it a always combine it with side flip. Do you have any hint how can I avoid it?
@AfroPK thank u very much, much help. i will improve, and keep in touch. thank u.
Ive been trying this but i cant get my legs straight and I can't get sideways in the air. How can I fix that?
