    I don't know why people are calling her a b**** or saying this was a terrible presentation... I think she is flipping awesome! Straight to the point, informative and articulate...Better than the infinite many tutorials of 20 something year olds who have been shooting for maybe a year and say "like" and " or whatever" every 3 seconds and raise their voice as though asking a question every time they explain a camera setting....

      R. R. She is beyond awesome. I don’t want a teacher to pacify me. She’s effective and knowledgeable. The ones who don’t like her makes it easier. Some students aren’t good learners.

    I really like teachers who don't waffle on about "How good am I" but make logical straight talking sense, and I now know Julia Kelleher is one of the best. I'd love to sit in on one of her lessons.

    Straight forward and great advice. Posing multiple people has always been a challenge to me but the rule of offsetting heads is perfect.

    Didn’t know this was focused on infants, but really enjoyed it. Concern for all subjects came through strongly. Thank you.

    You bring up so many great points regarding newborns that I’ve never heard addressed in the Public Health community that I’ll be sharing with my former colleagues at a state health department. Portraits with a newborn are so common, and, as you illustrate, they present opportunities for problems that need to be addressed.

    Great video! Not a bunch of technobabble that puts you to sleep. Just great presentation of technique. Learned more about posing in 16 minutes than I did in a 4 hour workshop

    This is a really great class. The one difficulty I have is with instructing the model/person who I am photographing. Obviously I wouldn't wanna bore them with all of the rules but I need to be able to explain it in a simple way.

    I think, maybe, that you can pose people naturally or you can't. You make a great job of explaining it, but many photographers just know what looks good and I suspect having more than three rules is tricky in the moments of the shoot. Love your style, you are a natural.

    None of them should be on the same plane (5:10), is the simplest no bull explanation I have heard about the issue.

  • @mixiblob7033
    @mixiblob7033 9 років тому

    Was the 35mm suggested just for adults? I always use a 35mm for newborn but change to 50mm when bringing the parent in, is that a no-no too?

    • @Tomasz_Piekarski
      @Tomasz_Piekarski 8 років тому +1

      35 is not intended to take pictures of HUMANS. Unless you're doing a reportage or street photography where people are just small part of the picture or there is more then 10 people at the same time. The distortion of 35 mm kills the beauty of portraiture. 50 mm is the absolute minimum.

    • @RayValdezPhotography
      @RayValdezPhotography 7 років тому

      35 is good if you want the environment to fill a lot of the frame and are somewhat close to a human .

    Very informative video. Thank you, I learned a lot from this :)
    I just have a question. I am still an amateur so please give me a little more understanding than the usual.
    I understand that 85mm focal length and above are the ideal focal length when shooting portraiture (I use myself a 85mm f1/.8 USM on a 5D II and has plans to get a 70-200 in the future) I just want to know how it will work for smaller sensored cameras. I plan to get a Fuji as a secondary body. So for the lens selection, should I also go for 85mm and above? just a lens with an equivalent field of view?
    Thank you and God Bless.

    • @OscarCampos79
      @OscarCampos79 9 років тому +3

      Shin from what I have read, when using a crop sensor (ex: Nikon DX) and you use a 50mm lens, it gives you the field of view of a 75mm, not the compression. So taking that, you should still use an 85mm+ lens for the compression which will minimize the physical distortions.

      Oscar Campos That cleared a lot of things up.Thank you for a very detailed explanation. Warm Regards.

    • @RizHail
      @RizHail 9 років тому +1

      Oscar Campos thank you this is good simple explanation. but it also changes DOF along with FOV on lens on crop sensor.

  • @JoVegaPhotography

    so if a 35mm and 50mm are no-no lenses for newborn photography, what do you suggest? I currently use a 24-70 on a ff camera.

      +TheSundevil1984 I actually just bought myself one for Christmas. :) Merry Christmas to me. The only thing with using it in my studio, I have to be far away from my subject (infants) and I don't feel comfortable with that.

    • @smdvisionphotography
      @smdvisionphotography 8 років тому

      That's true, but for newborns, you're good with a wide angle lens.

    i have a point that worry me. when you take photos to the baby if the baby is in one position for a long time the hands of the baby turn sleep. how could you solve this point?

  • @RizHail
    @RizHail 9 років тому

    great video and great explanation. one thing scared me was how these parents were holding the baby in crawling position in their hands. child could easily fall off to ground that way.

    Just make sure you dont do a photosession with a newborn RIGHT after being vaccinated, especially for flu or any LIVE viruses...it can easily be passed....keep nails short, hands and equpment sanitized (like camera)

    2:18 The pause, the helplessness, the frustration... "posing does not have to be perfection".... That's when i stopped watching. She was, is and always be right..... Care more about the light than about posing.

    • @RayValdezPhotography
      @RayValdezPhotography 7 років тому

      its somewhat equal. you sont want to spend all day on light you might miss a moment or tire the model.

      Ron Spi Lighting is important but it won’t sell a portrait. The pose and expression are what sells. Even if the lighting was flat! When was the last time a client said, “I don’t like the lighting on that one.” ? Never. What do I hear daily? “I don’t like my smile here.” “I like this pose better than that one”, “I like this side of my face better than the other.” Lighting? I’ve never heard that complaint in the 32 years I’ve been at this.

    Funny someone else mentions this too, as soon as I saw her I was thinking Bambi jr. I love how a lot of Creativelives guest are starting to wear their best clothes, not! What is it with these torn up jeans and stuff. Jen Rozenbaum does it too. I think it's silly and and unprofessional, especially if your not a teen. I get it, your trying to look cool and hip and down with the peep's, but you also want to look like you know what your talking about. Would you like a family to show up for a shoot and all be dressed like this, not me. Also as nice as she seems to be, she is just re saying stuff that has been said by Bambi, Sue and many of the other guests.
