I like that Toby's structuring this game like Paper Mario, in a sense: between every chapter, you'll most likely return to Castle Town to do challenges, fuse gear, buy healing items, and talk to the NPCs to see what they have to say. It's a nice way to break up the so far very dense chapters.
reminds me of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, where the castle was the main hub where you get equipment upgrades and the like. Coincidentally, Queen herself is a big reference to Princess Shroob from the same game.
I think it’s specifically a node to Super paper Mario… at least story wise. Even undertale has super paper Mario nods like with the colours of the 7 hearts…
@@lau0104 Perhaps it's all perspective? Maybe. Kris sees themself as living in Asriel's shadow, they feel like a blank slate, the unfavourite. Asriel, who thinks the world of their younger human sibling, is blind to this, and sees Kris as the one showered in medals and love.
(spoiler) Maybe the reason why Ralsei knows so much about Kris and the "real" world is because Ralsei is just Kris's own "better" version of Asriel that they created for themselves? I guess that could explain why Ralsei can live in a different dark world without turning to stone?
This is honestly some of the most beautiful music in the game, and I see it as a representation of how lonely ralsei is when you and Susie aren’t around.

When I first started to hear this tune, I remembered back to when Toby first played this at the end of the 5th anniversary concert stream. Or, well, the first draft I assume. And this just... This sent me to tears. This game holds such emotional ties to me and so many others. This game will always hold a place in my heart, one that will always remain.
It's really beautiful how so many people feel this way about it. It's such a sonder and connecting experience reading through these comments. Hope you're doing well random stranger.
The concert was where the part at 1:45 was played for the first time, with just that new section being sung by a real person. It made it feel special, and it stayed with me as a lovely little mystery, looking forward to hearing how it would be used one day. As the months went on, I started to doubt that I was remembering it exactly right, but somehow I never wanted to rewatch the video to find out. I just kept what I did remember of it in my head, waiting. I didn't hear the tune again until playing Chapter 2 the other day, and as I recognized it, I just felt... quietly pleased. To know that, though I had shortened it and misremembered it just slightly, it was the same tune after all. Somewhere outside of the mess of the realities of my life, this gentle, cozy-sad song made me feel like I'd done one little tiny thing right.
I know people say it sounds homey and warm... but this sounds REALLY sad to me. Like all your friends and pets are going away one by one, saying goodbye without waiting for a reply, fading away forever and you're so small and so helpless to stop it. A sort of boundless melancholy in a place that should be full of comfort and love. It's extremely pretty, but I also want to make it... like... stop.
I personally think this song is conveying the feeling of nostalgia, like you’re remembering the good ol’ times, but also know you can’t go back, and it’s just so bittersweet
I think it does sound homely and warm, but there's also this pervasive sense of loneliness to it for me. It's... kinda what I'd imagine Ralsei would feel here. It's home, but... it's lonely, being here on his own. There's a sense of comfort here, to be sure, but also a sense of longing. A certain... emptiness. ...It's definitely a feeling I'm familiar with.
Honestly, yeah. I was seeing all the comments of people getting joy and warmth and safe feelings, and I feel the opposite. It feels like the "bad side" of nostalgia, where things are slipping away faster than you can remember and enjoy them. The passage of time. The finite nature of our lives. Mortality. It's heavy for me.
I wonder if the more recruits you collect the more the theme would build up. As Chapter 1 had a more lonely tune and this Chapter brung a more fitting tune for a kingdom with a few subjects.
The song probably will build up from chapter to chapter. Chapter 3's version of this song will likely be more upbeat, hopeful about an expanding kingdom of friends.
@@adcon00 not sure if you meant to imply it, but I do worry about bringing all the Darkners in one place. In a sense it's like merging the Dark Worlds together and consolidating all their Darkness in one central Fountain. Ralsei could have ulterior motives to bringing them all there

A beautifully endearing theme that truly didn't deserve to fall so ridiculously low under the radar in chapter 2's entire ost. Very underrated in my opinion.
