I've watched four different trainings on this feature and so far you are the ONLY one to get the math correct on upscaling 1080p and which "x" multiplier to use for 4k, 6k, and 8k. Just wanted to say nice work for actually getting those numbers correct and not confusing me further ^_^ Edit: Also, beautiful footage and music selection :)
Rob I am so pleased you did this video. As I am going to try and purchase the Panasonic S5, Panasonic Gh5s, Panasonic S1 and Panasonic Gh5. Over the course off time. My laptop is i5 processor so the HD would work ok. So the plan is to shot in 1080HD and then upscale to 4K
Unfortunately, when you try to do this in the non-Studio (free) you get a overlay that says "DaVinci Resolve Studio". While it is unfortunate that we cannot use this feature with the basic version, I can understand Black Magic reserving it for their paying customers. As I use resolve more and learn more of what it can do for me, I am seriously thinking of upgrading the the Studio version. The Superscaling feature is one more reason for me to want too. Thanks for the tutorial.
Game changer! Thank you! I've also been using Resolve's new Speed Warp to get almost perfect 120p HD from my 60p EOS-R footage. It does take a lot of time to render but results are amazing.
How I noticed the difference in quality from upscale versus superscale, is in the guys hair. it was more muddy looking with just upscaling, but, when you did the superscale, the hair looked like it was shot in higher resolution.
Thanks for the tip man! Very useful when you're working with footage that was shot in different resolutions. The catch is that is only available for the paid version. Cheers!
A few questions: 1. What do you mean by 'upscaled to 4k' when you compare that to superscaled? What kind of upscaling? How is this done? 2. Is that really just superscaled grain with the girl on the phone? It looks super noisy on her face...Is this just what very sharp grain looks like (it seems to move around, like noise...) or is it noise created by upscaling film-grainy footage? 3. How are you adding grain in the clip of the girl in the hat? 4. Is the railway shot of Teignmouth/Bishopsteignton in Devon? It looks super familiar!
Anything like this in Premiere? I guess if you had Resolve and wanted to edit in Premiere you could export it in an intermediate codec after applying superscale but that would add quite a bit of time to the workflow.
Actually I don't! I'm so used to those awkward buttons I've got the muscle memory in my fingers to easily change settings, etc haha. Although it does get a little awkward in some setups!

@Rob Ellis Is there any obvious downsides to doing an upscale apart from the time it takes to click on some Noise reduction? (or why should i not be doing this all day everyday on every project?)?
Hi very nice tutorial. In this situation it seems not important to rec in 4K so I reduce memory usage; if i rec in UHD and then I upscale x2 to 4K, is the result the same by rec in 4K ? thanks
Hey! I have a 21 minute colour grading tutorial available on my website for £8 which works for any camera - including the BMMCC. Check it out if you're interested - www.robelliscinematography.com/downloads. Cheers! :)
Thanks for your awesome tutorial. If I want to superupscale from 1080p to 4K and render in 4K what should my timeline setting, image scaling setting be if I intend to monitor the color grading using a decklink graphics card? THe issue I am having is that the footage is zoomed in the preview monitor.
Thanks for watching! :) set your timeline to 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD - and try image scaling at Scale Full Frame with Crop. I'm not 100% on that working, but if that doesn't do it, work the edit in 1080p then change the timeline resolution to 3840 x 2160 before you render it out :)
so just to clarify, 'super scaling' is not 'up scaling'? 'up scaling' is done first, by changing your timeline resolution, and then you apply 'super scaling' to further polish and sharpen the image? Great relaxing tone throughout, nice work! Cheers, Nick
Hi, is there a difference made to the image rendering other than sharpening, which is something you could as well just apply without calling it "superscaling"?
Hey Dominik, a standard HD to 4K upscale for example, will just enlarge a HD image to 4K, whereas super scale actually improves detail - so you're in a better position to sharpen that added detail.
Sorry for this question Rob. But does the guy on the right @ 4:02 have a social media platform? I'm trying to show a new hair stylist the hair I used to have. And his matches it almost perfectly.
Hi Rob. Your videos are wonderful...love this tutorial! What is your workflow for best settings to upload the superscaled video to UA-cam? I assume you set up your resolve project as 4k, import HD footage, Superscale and render as 4K for UA-cam upload? What codec and settings are ideal for UA-cam export out of Resolve? Thanks, Todd
.Wonderful tutorial my friend.I have two questions.1) Can I apply super scale after editing and coloring? 2) Is there a difference in quality in 4k from the conversion with super scale and the original from the camera?
Hi Rob, great tutorial. I wanna crop(zoom) until 40% in some parts of my videos but my camera do not have 4k. Do you think is better downscale 1080p to 720 because parts crop or mantain 1080p? i am asking because i read that up to 40% crop in 1080p on youtube the majority of people can not see de difference.
Hey Sam, so I simplified it a little in the video by only mentioning the pixel height (1080p, 2160p, 3240p, 4320p). So in the case of 1080p being super scaled 2x, the 2x scaling is applied to both the width and height of the pixels, which does mean 4x the pixels in total. So 2x 1920 x 1080 becomes 3840 x 2160, or 4K. Hope that makes sense!
Question: Say you've shot in (whatever, but let's say) 4k, but during editing, you zoom in on the image to have a close-up. Is there any value to using superscaling in that situation?
No, because Resolve is already up scaling this to match the timeline resolution. Also please watch this demo (I wasn’t involved in it) to better understand resolution: yedlin.net/DisplayPrepDemo/index.html
I guess you could, as you'd be super scaling 4K to 8K (or above), but if you're only outputting the final render to 4K it might not make a huge amount of difference. A more common scenario would be if you zoom and crop into a 1080p clip in a 4K timeline and then render out ot 4K.
Resolve does upscale to match the timeline resolution, but the super scale will help to improve the detail on the up scaled shot so when you do things like cropping in, you have a bit more detail to work with, or when you render out to a higher resolution, you're in a better position to sharpen that added detail to match other shots natively shot in that higher resolution (or just a general boost in resolution/detail)!
Hey Rob, in the color correction chain, is super scaling taking effect after that or before? It looks like in this video when you add grain that the scaling is taking place afterwards and sharpening the grain is that right? Would you have to render a scaled clip and then color correct it to have the scaling take place first?
@@RobEllisCinematographer I do find that BMMCC's cDNG easily competes with newer 4K cameras as well in the sub 5k USD category. Might be just a placebo I don't know.
I was already discourage to upscale 1080p to 4K by other people, being the only advantage is the higher bitrate youtube compression. But after seeing this, the results are like night and day. Do you think this will work well with game footage?
In my experience you should never be discouraged by people telling you not to do something - do it anyway and find out why it does or doesn't work for yourself :) I can't see why it wouldn't work with game footage, give it a go! :D
Wow, this literally changed my life, thank you so much! Is there a reason you do it after the color grade or can you also do it before and get the same effect?
Rob Ellis Alright, thanks! So that means I can also just super scale the clips before if I want to grade them in a different software and it would be the same effect?
This is wild. Just gave it a go on a short clip and noticed it does indeed eat up my gpu - suddenly so slooow. Your videos are all really great, especially your most recent ones using this superscale method. Curious, what kind of processing power are you using? And how long does it take you to render one of these videos superscaled for youtube?
Hi Rob, just to clarify when you say upscale you mean change the settings of the 1080P timeline to 4K and then use the super scale function to super scale to 4K and export in 4K correct?
Correct! In the case of the superscale, 2x scaling is applied to both the width and height of the pixels, which does mean 4x the pixels in total. So 2x 1920 x 1080 becomes 3840 x 2160, or 4K :)

Everything is either with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5k and the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera - 5:29 - 7:51 are shot with the Nikon D800. Thanks Louis! :)
Yes! I've super scaled 1080p to 4K then exported to 1080p and the resulting file is still sharper and clearer than if you'd just straight exported to 1080p with no super scale. Just make sure your timeline is set to 4K :)
upscaling is basically just outputting at a higher resolution. You start with 1080, and output 4k. Of course you don't gain anything here quality-wise, just size. While superscaling involves filters to make the final product look better.
I think the audio is perfect. Most UA-camrs (like Pete McCanon) tend to blow the db's for their music, and their talking is very soft. The way it's done here is PERFECT to me.

For the whole superscale process yes! A standard upscale would be the same thing but without using superscale :)
Is this the same as up scaling to improve quality?
Sort of like upscaling on steroids :)
so superscaling is a higher quality upscale im gettin this vid is showing
Right on
4k is actually 4x the resolution of 1080p.
1920*1080= 2,073,600
3840*2160= 8,294,400
8,294,400/2,073,600=4
