    The rivets and the "turn in" design are mainly for your protection and not for protecting the axe. Fall on the axe and the edge will be stopped by the rivets in the sheath. But you got a file and stone with you and will have that edge looking good in no time at all. If the edge goes through you run the risk of severly hurting your self, perhaps several hours from the nearest hospital.

    The occasional 's' in the end of the name is because of possessive pronouns in Swedish. For example: Gränsfors Bruk is the company name, but when saying one of their axes, they often say, Gränsfors Bruks forest axe. Which basically is Gränsfors Bruk's forest axe, but in Swedish we don't put the this ' between the word and the s. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

    I did EXACTLY what you mentioned with the sheath about 2 days after owning mine and it did put a vey slight Nick in the blade. Glad to see that you guys have options available for replacement sheaths. I'll be looking into getting one soon.

    Bought mine at a local backpacking store around 15 years ago. I saw this new item in the window for $95 and it went home with me. Seeing now they’re still difficult to find and selling often above $200 I fell like I made the right choice. It’s been a worthy companion on overnight to weekend trips and easily the best tool among my friends for building a good fire. Like the video says, the weakest point is the sheath! If these are these still for sale I’ll buy one from this fellah

    Yes Sirie, Even though our winter broke all kind of record as been one of the warmest. I still would of wished I had the Scandinavian Forest Axe instead of the Small Forest Axe, I'm not really complaining because the S.F.A. stood up to the test, I think it's time for me to upgrade. I do have a 26" Estwing and I liked that size when we process alot if wood. Especially when chopping down a dead tree. But I really like the portability of my S.F.A. I can harness the Scandinavian Forest Axe like I carry my 26" Estwing, That's probably why I don't rush getting it and besides I'm also checking out the Hultafors Bruks ones too. Great video Eugene, Thanx any imput would be appriciated.

    They do come shaving sharp. I had to wait 3 months for my Swedish Carving Axe and it was worth every second. I have the SFA here too, and I love it also. I think this manufacturer is superior and plan to gift a couple to my brother and brother-in-law this Christmas. You are absolutely right about the sheath. When my SFA came, the shipping had bumped it around and the axe actually cut through the sheath and rivets! The sheath was replace, free, but the axe did have a chip on the edge where it cut the rivet. :p

  • @DesertFox01
    @DesertFox01 3 роки тому +4

    I thought the rivets were to prevent the blade from coming through the sheath if you fell on it and cutting you.

  • @harryhalfmoon
    @harryhalfmoon 5 років тому +7

    NOTE: The stock sheath has a protective leather lining on the inside, over the rivets, so it never comes in contact with them. Clearly visible at 8:17 . Damaging the axe in the sheath is therefor not an issue. You'd think the Swedes know their stuff. And they do. Like my 20 year old Optimus Nova; Built to last.

    • @Sandals578
      @Sandals578 4 роки тому

      It really isn’t a good quality sheath. Great axe but the leather is too thin. Ended up making my own sheath for it. Also, rivets work fine but for an axe going on 200 bucks I’m gonna go with stitch work every time.

      Just received my GB scandie forest axe, and the sheath/mask is surprisingly poor, compared to my Hultafors premium which is my only other decent axe. It's functional, but very thin, stiff leather and a bit rough around the edges. Honestly the whole axe is less well finished than the Hultafors. Quite surprised and a bit disappointed as the GB was more expensive.

    If you are in the market for an axe of this size, than visit Ike at Wolf Valley Forge for a custom built Canoe axe, or any of his other axe models. I have the Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, but the craftsmanship of the axe is nothing compared to Wolf Valley Forge’s axes.

    Very entertaining and informative review, have my subscription. I feel, however, that you are only criticising the sheath because you are trying to sell your own version. My family has had this very axe for well over 50 years and not once has the blade been damaged by the metal things (due to the leather being extremely tight close to the metal things) nor is the sheath even slightly damaged. The only way I imagine the blade/sheath possibly being damaged would be if you were to completely forget about the sheath being on and make a full-on swing. It feels like you try to find flaws that do not really exist because you want to make $16.99. Still a very good review though.

    Beautifully done video; I picked up mine Tri State, Coeur d'Alene. Not only functionally sharp, light and high-carbon Swedish steel, but a work of art that I proudly adorn the wall of my winter abode. The blade is so sharp that I inadvertently sliced into the sheath. How do I pick up your sheath?

    Very good ax! I hope i have it someday. But! Regarding sheath from amazon. I think that the sheath don't have rivets in front of the blade is not really good idea as you say. Ok it's a nice blade but it's just a tool. From safety reason. What is better to cut yourself or small damage in your blade? When I was still a scout I saw with my own eyes when a guy fell on someone’s backpack. There was a knife with sheath in the backpack. The knife cut the sheath and cut something in the backpack and backpack and stabbed the boy between the ribs. luckily there was still so much material in between that it only stabbed 5mm. He was extremely lucky.

    • @John5.56
      @John5.56 Рік тому +1

      It’s really not a downfall, it’s designed like that for a reason. If you happen to fall onto your axe or something like that the blade will hit those soft brass/copper rivets instead of popping through and slicing you up. It only takes a few minutes to put an edge back on the blade, it also doesn’t take long to bleed out lol.

    Ouch $46 sheath? Any new year discounts on the sheath? I cant wait for my GB Scandidnavian FA to get here. Hey did your axe come that dark shade of red or is that the result of your finishing the axe handle?
    I heard that the darker handle is just as strong as the white ones and is actually preferrable, Is this true?

    I checked and their out of stock, But how much are they ? Thanx in advance, I see you have a nice set going for yourselfe, This G B and the Benchmade Bushcrafter #162, All you need is either a Bob's Buck Saw or the Wicked Tough Saw, I have the Wicked Tough Saw as my on person carry folding saw, It's as tough as the name, I can even lite chop with it, but what I really like is that I can carry it open in the opened possition in the sheath when I'm building a shelter or my bed or when I'm processing firewood, You'd be surprised how good that feature is on a folding saw, Yet I also wear it as part of my Trio on my Survival Belt, very comfortable on person carry, , ,

    Within a month of owning this axe, I took it camping. The Mrs. thought she'd have a go at splitting some kindling, and without delay, she smashed the sheathed head into a piece of birch. One of the rivets popped out, the axe cut the sheath and the axe also got a chip out of it. So, yup... Sheath with rivets right through is an issue, and it does happen.

      my axe carries with it a tale aswell , for i once thought it to be destroyed as my home perished in the flames of a fire , but when I stood among the ashes , a glint caught my eye and I pulled from the ashes the axehead of my trusted companion. the handle was eviscerated but i polished the Axe head and after 3 days of labour it sparkled like the jewels of king Solomons treasure. I replaced the shaft and the rest is history . To this day i carry my axe with pride and it shall remain one of my most prized possessions untill my dying breath , then it shall be passed to my son to continue the legacy .

    Actually you will find that the axe won't damage the sheath very much because after a couple of months of use the sheath will loosen up and the axe will fit in without cutting into the back of the sheath. You just have to be very careful in the beginning. But I agree, even though the sheaths are good they are by far not on the same level as the axes themselves.

    I am a HUGE fan of GB axes! I do have a question though, how would, Eugene (I hope I spelled that right), how would you compare the Scandinavian Forest Axe to the Small Forest Axe? I'm looking for how they perform and what tasks one can do that the other can't, not just that the handle on one is so many inches long as opposed to the other.
    Thanks, and indeed, Praise the Lord for all He has given us!
    Jed Heinrich

    • @ReviewOutdoorGear
      @ReviewOutdoorGear  8 років тому

      +Jed Heinrich Hello! Yes, you got the name right. The Scandinavian is definitely capable of performing larger jobs - its easier to chop with it just because of the longer swing and heavier head. I like it in all aspects except that It's not as portable as the small forest axe. I would says thats the real and only difference.

    My Scandinavian forest axe doesn’t have a Metal wedge neither does my small forest axe, but my hunters axe does???? Wonder why?

      They stopped using them to save material and produce less waste on the environmental side of things.

    One thing Eugene, Can that sgeath be made with a belt type buckle instead of a snap ? Thanx in advance.

      +paulie 4x , I think it can, but that would be a bit more involved. Why?

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 8 років тому +1

      Because I want a Sheath for my Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor Range Hatchet I got it as a closeout at a good price, But I got it spot on, the wood is as good as on my G B Small Forest Axe and the bevel was even, All it took was a little time to put as good of an edge aa my S.F.A. Oh, I would need more info, You see I almost got ripped off on e-bay and I pay everything by check or money order, I don't mind waiting until everything clears at the bank, that's not a problem for me. Lemme know Ok, Eugene, Thanx.

    Would like your sheath but I dislike brass. You should offer black/grey rivets or even better, copper.
