As for the G..It' s worth every penny! It cannot be compared with Defender, It's a different class of cars. You have a bunch of engines to chose from...not only 2.5 diesel and some petrol...it is strongly built, as for the feeling of driving one...priceless...the mixture of luxury and practicality is...fantastic. As for the best offroader in the world...that one is the one you modify yourself in your backyard...
@symmetry08 There are actually many available engines for the G class. Only the V8 is offered in the U.S. but elsewhere they have a very torquey diesel. As far as off road capabilities, just take a look at the number of armies that use the G versus a Defender.
im only 14, and i never got to go off roading (with a truck, even though we have a good off roader, the land rover defender) but it looks fun how fun is it really?
The MB G in this video is not set up for real off roading. There is a clear tire and clearance(side guards) advantage for the LR. They are both great cars!
To know the difference you have to drive both in identical situations. Very low range offroad and also towing. Take off when towing is smoother in the 300. While the Td5 is slightly more powerful, you will stall it before any 300tdi. Economy is another factor. the cost of parts and repairs when something goes wrong. I get injectors (new) for $150. get a quote For the Td5. And the bottom line if something goes wrong in the bush, you have a chance to repair most things with a decent tool set.
Yes, indeed, the Land Rover is cheap, but it reflects on the quality...big time. Same with Cherokee (this one has to qualify as a car first... :) I speak from experience...I had my friend's Defender on my hands for several weeks for "testing". It's a "mule". Can take on everyting...steep slopes, mud...but one can easily see it's a ceap car, although the price...is not that cheap...I once ended up with the gear selection lever in the air... The engine is ok...but I think it needs more power.
If you have driven both in offroad/ low range situations or towed, then you will understand. You will stall a td5 well before a 300tdi. It can be dangerouys in most situations. Most important is when you are deep into the bush and something goes wrong, I know which one I would have a better chance of fixing with a common tool set. Parts? no contest. They still make new 300tdi's to order. Mostly expedition vehicles. Nuff said.
yeah! mud boggin on some street tires! i love defenders and all but a FACTORY locked G with some simex tires and removed step bars would walk that defender in mud snow rock and whatever else, lol except maybe deep water
And you know what they say: If it's not german, it's not a car. Overengineering is the reason they lost the war, after all. PS The Leopard tank has a 14000km warranty!!!!!!
@14th20thKRHkickass thats bullshit and you know it, the defender has "glass" 10 spline axles until they put in the 24 spline which are also shit, no factory lockers and are the same price in the US as G wagens, i dont know where your from but i can say a 2002 g500 is roughly 25k where im from and a 94 D90 is 25-30k with 120k miles on a local craigslist. i know defender are cheap in EU countries and landys are cheap, but for the rest of us, it doesnt really matter which one, its the same money
I have a G but I hate the stigma that comes with the car....the defender is really capable but it's essentially the same chassis as the discovery 1/2. Decisions decisions...
(Quote)i ll go for the defender , just needed the lockers front/rear that you get on a g-wagen (unquote) Yeah, sure, and if my grandma had balls, she´d be my grandad LOL
What a shame to drive from Switzerland to do soem serious offroading in a southern country and not to have decent tyres. come on guys, get agricultural thread tyres , at least the roof racks would serve a decent purpose...
Merc is too expensive to take it out to wilderness. Defender are more practical choice to crawl through mud and rocks. Mers has a bigger compression engine but it is still not the choice for off-road thrushing.
Defender is better. In some situations like on rocks then a g would be better because of the lockers, but in the mud they are to heavy. Look how the g was spining in the mud, and the defender when through ok
@hansmuyshondt Don't be silly, you and the 7 thumbs up so far. You obviously don't have a clue.about either. Both great offroaders and with twin diff lockers the Defenders are unstoppable. The defender in this video is open diff both ends and look how good it is.
@14th20thKRHkickass a std defender will not out wheel a G in stock form. what your saying in compete rubbish, you cant tell me that an unlocked defender can go farther than a locked up F&R G class, think about what your saying for 1 second and take the hatred for the german people and put it to the side, and realize your precious landy is a great bargain where you are, but its nowhere near the same in STOCK form
SCREW the g wagon. I would rather buy a defender TD5 and customise the hell out of it and still have money left over... I know the landy is made with really .. REALLY cheap materials but a little (maybe more than a little) customisation can fix that.

@TS6DK True but the Defender is supplied from the factory with larger wheels and tyres than the G.
@SamTheSuave those are street tyres on the Defender as well

Both great off road vehicles. The Defender is definitely the better looking vehicle of the two, though!
Defender é estilo de vida, Maximo de aventura!!"!!!
Would help if the Defender had been specified with traction control - makes a huge difference when you have no front/rear difflocks.
im only 14, and i never got to go off roading (with a truck, even though we have a good off roader, the land rover defender) but it looks fun how fun is it really?

defender is the best 4x4. i have defender 90 td5 2001 year.. and he'sin excellent condition. Defender is somethins that must have.
air lockers work well on them
what electrics are in the defender? XD

Land Rover Defender and Mercedes G are the best offroaders in the world!!! But for a G you have to pay the double price...
how so? i have a TD5, i think its a fantastic motor.
Landrover Defender and Geländewagen are both great cars.
But i still prefer the Geländewagen.
yeah! mud boggin on some street tires! i love defenders and all but a FACTORY locked G with some simex tires and removed step bars would walk that defender in mud snow rock and whatever else, lol except maybe deep water
@296jayce my bad not defender discovery series//
As for Land Rover, one better get used to saying: "Thank you, come again" :), instead of "Thank you"....if you know what I mean...
And you know what they say: If it's not german, it's not a car. Overengineering is the reason they lost the war, after all.

A defender is not strong enough for the difflock's, a lot of mechanical problems.. That's the reason why a G kosts a lot more
g is better no question,i drove both and i loved g.i would buy one if i don't have a car.
I have a G but I hate the stigma that comes with the car....the defender is really capable but it's essentially the same chassis as the discovery 1/2. Decisions decisions...

what am i expecting from british ?? making the g wins ?? XD
Oh by all means have your British car. That leaves more better cars for the rest of us...
Both cars with road tyres...
yay u took my advice great use of language
@hansmuyshondt Don't be silly, you and the 7 thumbs up so far. You obviously don't have a clue.about either. Both great offroaders and with twin diff lockers the Defenders are unstoppable. The defender in this video is open diff both ends and look how good it is.
Nobody says it is a bad car. Just that there is better ones. Like the G. or the Santana. or the Unimog.
....yes it is.
i cant believe thse two cars are being compared landrover are for offroad g wag made for a soccer mum on the street
DEFENDER 300tdi. LEGEND. TD5 not so good overall.
@14th20thKRHkickass you might not be, but i am
stop comparing Mercedes G and Defender
it is better to compare Puch G and Defender
@14th20thKRHkickass a std defender will not out wheel a G in stock form. what your saying in compete rubbish, you cant tell me that an unlocked defender can go farther than a locked up F&R G class, think about what your saying for 1 second and take the hatred for the german people and put it to the side, and realize your precious landy is a great bargain where you are, but its nowhere near the same in STOCK form
Defender 1st even if the G is better
Id take a Defender over any other 4x4 antyime anyday anyplace. Land Rover THEBEST4X4XFAR
kill the music!!!! its kind a brokeback mountain kind a music :(:(:(
