Facing the Saudi billions in FM24

- I move to one of the best resourced clubs in Japan to speed up my Pentagon Challenge. The Asian Champions League puts us up against the Saudi clubs and their enormous resource advantages.
My main FM24 save this year is a pentagon challenge. This isn't going to be a let's play series but when I see something interesting along the way I will make the odd video.

FM24 squad building approach:
1. Fix the tactic first then recruit for the tactic
2. Squad grid - 2 per position
3. Sort out the finances
4. Player recruitment: Fill gaps, improve weak links (export attribute data from FM using filters then use python to rank and compare)

I've been trying to add a few roles to my python code, using the tutorial you provided a few videos back... however I've ran into the problem that the code isn't running anymore and is saying - "TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for /: 'str' and 'int' " and "TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for /: 'str' and 'int'

Really enjoying your stuff mate. I am at a similar point now with Fukushima United, where I've won back to back leagues, a cup and that, but now come up against the money bags of Saudi Arabia.
My issue is, the board are very VERY reluctant to build anything beyond basic youth structures, and we are hardly wealthy. It isn't part of a Pentagon, so I don't want to stick it out, but I've no idea how to get into a better position short of continuing to achieve the impossible, and hope it leads to stronger funds/a take over.
FWIW if I was trying to generate funds with a Japanese team I'd be looking to sign young inexpensive players and sell them on to European leagues in the £3-5m range with sell-on clauses - by the time I was in the J1 league I was getting Bundesliga offers for players
@@squirrel_plays_fof4318 Yeah, I've had some success so far actually selling off some of my young Thai and Indonesian players to Saudi, though perhaps I shouldn't be now improving my enemies!
It's an enjoyable struggle, but a struggle none the less. Negotiating decent release clauses for players has so far been a big hurdle, as we just don't yet command that big of a reputation. Likely gonna lose my 20 year old talented winger for just under a million this window because of that. He wont sign a new deal, either!

Not really, I just do it by eye watching a few games and tweaking
Does make you wonder if the Asian Champions League will align with the Saudi league or Saudi teams face the same issues going forward.
Interesting idea in my opinion at least, try the best tactic from FM-Arena with the best possible players using your scoring system and see just how meta you can go

It's a system / game model that I know works - I tend to simply install a decent system at a new club and recruit players to fit it instead of fitting the tactic to the players IYSWIM

I don't like your tactic.
Your volantes will attack the same spaces that your wide strikers are already attacking not to mention that with that role they very rarely provide themselves to build up from the back so you're relying only on your center backs to break through the opposition pressing. It doesn't matter how good your center backs are at ball playing, midfielders are generally way better at this and you're actively handicapping your build up by not having enough players, or in this case any, in midfield for passing options.
In this game it's also very rare to find a midfielder that is any good at shooting. The volantes certainly confuse and break up opposition marking patterns but it's rarely worth it having an extreme risk of getting countered just so you get players that aren't any good at finishing in forward positions.
It also seems that you have shorter passing on. You gotta understand that this puts a global "take fewer risks" instruction to every player on the pitch. This might be amazing for possession but as you know possession doesn't win games. It completely neuters any and all attempts for a through ball or changing the ball to wider areas.
If you like this style of play I would recommend going individually to every player and setting the "take fewer risks" passing option except the ones you actually want to attempt through balls. In your current tactic that would to be your BPD's.
My suggestion would be to change the volantes do DM-s and the WB's to attack, so now your wingbacks are the ones making runs into vacant spaces instead of your volantes into the same spaces as your strikers and you can much better build up from the back by having a midfield.
Interesting, thanks. These days I tend to watch a few games in long-form, tweak the tactics and then once it looks ok I just leave it. Recognise there is probably quite a bit of optimisation I'm missing out on
