My son and I visited Grover Mills, New Jersey.....ground zero for the Orson Welles scare! We saw the alien looking water tower that the locals shot at, the plaque at the local park commemorating the "invasion", and visited the Grover Mills Coffee shop which has tons of WoW memorabilia! ( and damn good coffee)
I loved this book. A close second behind The Time Machine. I hope Olive had the good sense to recommend the 1953 movie over the 2005 version. Then again, she’s a dog, so maybe the TV series. Or Jeff Wayne’s musical.
Is it true that this caused a real panic when it was read out on American Radio and people thought that it was actual news? I've read the book and seen various film/tv adaptations. The 50's version scared me when I was a child. Then, I watched it a few years later and could see the strings on the spaceships! 😉📚 The Jeff Wayne version is well worth checking out!
They did a radio play that mimicked a news broadcast. So, yeah, a little of people thought Martians had attacked. I bet you can listen to that show on UA-cam.
First of all, love the hat! Second, another exceptional book! I read this book last year and I can't believe I went so long not reading this book. I definitely love the twist ending, and the slow, character focused alien invasion book feel was perfect (not action filled, military fighting focused alien invasion books so common now). This is such a classic book!
Great timing! Definitely in the Wells spirit now reading War in the Air. not as much of a highly regarded book today as War of the Worlds, but it's really great. Of course, War of the Worlds is brilliant -- I will be re-reading this son along with Moreau and The Invisible Man. Wells really does get the horror vibe going more often than some realise. I think The Invisible man might be the apex of that, for him, but that's an entirely subjective judgment. Fantastic review!!
I've read this about once a year. I try 2 tell people that don't read exactly what you said. If you read a great story it's not even like your reading it , but living it.👍 By the way Your buddy has been doing a great job with his latest Videos. 👍😁👍 He actually made me want 2 read a Richard Laymon book, and I know better. LoL. Great Review 👍😁👍
War of the Worlds is a true classic. I've read it many times and listened to the Orson Welles broadcast based off of it probably just as many times.
Me too! That was a great radio show.

Wow! That must have been some experience!
Great job!
Thanks!
I love this story. Great reading and discussion, as always.
Fantastic Michael I am enjoying catching up on these Sunday Penguins and such a good choice for today a super story from one of the masters. :D
Thanks! Yeah, Wells was a master.
Great video! I inevitably bring this book up to my students when we discuss European conquest and colonialism.
Your class must be fun.
Ooo nice Moka pot, a sign of refined taste.
Ha! Of course, I’m just so refined!
I was distracted by the retro kitchen ! Ah yes Y2K - ca ching ca ching. Now how could I profit from a Martian invasion ? 😉
There is probably some way.

Ugh…I remember that TV show!

A science fiction novel I have actually read 🙂 good choice for Sunday penguin !
Thanks! I can’t remember if this one was one of the 1001 books.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 it is on the list! 😄

It is definitely a great classic! Thanks for the kind words about my beat up old hat.
Can’t believe I haven’t read this yet. I enjoyed the movie tho 😜
Ohhh the pain! The movie indeed! Olive wants you to read the book! She called me and told me !
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Well, if she said so. She is the boss.
Need to re-read all of these, it has been a long time ago.

Thanks so much. I appreciate you watching!

Justin sure has gotten a lot out of that crappy book! He’s kind of a mad genius!
👍
I listened to this on audiobook and wasn’t very impressed. Maybe I’ll try it in print. 🤔
Yes, try it.
1897, same years The Beetle by Richard Marsh and Dracula by Bram Stoker were released. Good year for fiction.
It certainly was!
I still think you could narrate audiobooks... I would listen to them
That’s very nice of you to say! I’m pretty sure everyone else would demand their money back.
I don't know. Do you think I'd like it?
Hmmm. You might like this one. It’s really good, and not just as a science fiction book.
