Hi folks, friendly neighborhood veterinarian here, dogs have a different reproductive physiology than humans. The bloody discharge is not actually a period. It's actually a sign that she's fertile - or in heat- ready to be receptive to a male dog. This happens about twice a year - not monthly - for female dogs that haven't been spayed. It's kind of the opposite to human periods - we women are at our least fertile during the period parts of our cycles. Hope this helps.
@@xMrsGontierx You're not alone - I had a colleague in vet school who confused her cycle with that of cows (they have a 28 day cycle like us, but their bloody discharge also indicates ovulation). Because of this misunderstanding, she got pregnant before she was ready to, career wise. Story has a happy ending. All worked out well for she and her husband, but goes to show you how even medical professionals have a tough time with female reproductive physiology. ☺️

For my Cairn Terrier we got from Trixie protective pants (a kind of belt) in the pet store here in Germany where you can insert little pads (just like mini human sanitary pads). It is very easy to use and the dog was comfortable as it’s little to non-restrictive to movement. Plus it’s completely reusable as you can wash it (cotton pants & belt) hence it’s except for the pads where I became creative and cut human sanitary pads / medical sterile materials to the right size) a one time investment. When my male Cairn Terrier later had an operation in the anal area, I used this belt on him throughout the healing process. He did not feel too constrained either and could pee freely. He could run freely, lift his leg, dig in the garden etc. just the sensitive anal area was protected. Hope this helps, since it was so useful, I thought I’d share this experience with you.
Haha... They have dog diapers and I have them. That's great you are allowing her to have her hormones. When we get them fixed too early, they die young. Just like humans we all need hormones for development and to fight off disease. Great job! ✔️💯

I think they’re aware of dogs getting spayed. Not all people want to get their dogs spayed or neutered, cause they want their dog to be able to have puppies.
I've never seen any one put a diaper on a dog, period. I used to have a female dog, I don't recall her bleeding. Maybe because we got her spayed after she had puppies.
Every breed of dog I ever had would have ripped that thing off in seconds. But I'll say this for them, they were always very good and tidy about cleaning themselves off. Since I didn't let my dogs lick my face and I always wash my hands after handling my dogs, it never was a problem. I didn't let 'em up on the furniture either so that wasn't a problem and I could always wash their bed or lay extra bedding in their bed, so that I can wash it and those were always theirs to stain up so... not a problem.
All mammals have a menstruation cycle though most have covert cycles. But certain animals like cats and dogs show visible discharge and bleed when they're in heat like human periods🤗

First of all its not a period, its a heat, dont let misinformation guide you. Dogs are not like humans at all, so dont think of them as such when tackling their HEAT. They dont feel cramps, they dont need coddling, they’re literally just getting ready to breed. If you dont plan to breed your dog, at 6 months you shouldnt have to deal with her heat at all because you should be getting her desexed, which stops heats altogether, and yes also stops the bleeding (ovulation to attract males). Also heats come around once every 6 months and last from 2-4 weeks, unlike how apparently all of this comment section thinks theyre once a month and just for a week (honestly how can u be that misinformed when ur dog will only do it once every 6 months? R u just blind??)

My babygurl was miserable. I had my YaYa-Gabor (Yorkshire Terrier) Spayed after her second heat cycle. I would hand feed her…had an alarm set for every 3 hrs to massage and use warm wash rags on her. I truthfully think I got her spayed for my sanity and stress more so than just ears. She was so mean to her older and younger yorkie brothers they were confused about what she wanted. I actually had to hand feed her and she lost so much of her little weight i consulted after hrs on what to do. It has been almost 2 yrs now and she is still barely tolerant of her brothers but super clingy to me now. FYI…The best decision & the biggest mistake of Spaying and Neutering all 3 at the same time. Wowwwwwwwwww I had NO idea how difficult that would be and I definitely do not recommend anyone taking on that challenge without help. Trying to split the quality time with each of them watching the other have mom to themselves. The not being able to interact with each other for weeks. OMG 😳 My furbabies behave as if they are only children. Hahahahaaaaaa Please take my advice and make very separate appts. For your own sanity. LOL The happy ending is …No surprise litters for my babies and I. No more stressful late night relax sessions with a morning headache attached and NO MORE DIAPERS AND TANGLED FUR. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Poor Olive… I know this is a year old, but next time you might check to make sure it’s not too tight.. looked a bit restrictive.. they make ones that are elastic which might be more comfy for her. And not sure it’s a good idea to take your dog to the dog park while she’s in heat - if I heard that right. She will attract the wrong kind of attention from all the male dogs if you get my drift…
Our dolfy also went through that stage few months back.. those days were really uncomfortable for her.. n we were also a bit worried caz it lasted for about 3 weeks.. but finally everything was back to normal..👍
Thats fairly normal, a dogs HEAT cycle will come once every 6 months, its when they’re most fertile and ready to breed. They can last between 2-4 weeks and in this time can be aggressive (mostly snappy to other dogs) and sensitive, however shouldn’t be in pain (if she is, take her to a vet because thats not normal) Don’t misunderstand this heat cycle for a humans period cycle because they’re different and you should not treat ur dog the same. Your dog is not a human. A woman on her period is not getting ready to "breed" in fact she is most non fertile then, and a period is to clean out her reproductive areas, thats why she bleeds. Unless you plan to breed her, i’d advice to get her desexed, it will stop these heat cycles, prevent unwanted pregnancies and just be a lot nicer for her.

A doggie toilet can also be a canalized shower tray/shower base. Dogs should never use a human toilet, because it is dangerous for them, not only difficult. Respect all Dog's needs ! OUR DOGS ARE OUR CHILDREN, OUR MOST BELOVED FAMILY ! Remember that a dog feels like a person - suffering, pain, the need to relieve itself, it needs to go out and get fresh air and movement. Yesterday my puppy turned 6 months today I woke up to her crying she just started today and I'm worried at first I though she ate something wrong and vomited up water and blood but then I caught her squatting and spraying it on the floor I feel so bad for her do they give dogs gravol and Tylenol do they have this for dogs can they take it 😭🥴
definitely not a requirement~ and only applies or female dogs, we only had Olive wear the diaper b/c we didn't want our floor/furniture/bed to get stains, being small in size not much, but can't go chasing after her 24/7 so it worked for us~🤗🐾

First of all its not a period, its a heat, dont let misinformation guide you. Dogs are not like humans at all, so dont think of them as such when tackling their HEAT. They dont feel cramps, they dont need coddling, they’re literally just getting ready to breed. If you dont plan to breed your dog, at 6 months you shouldnt have to deal with her heat at all because you should be getting her desexed, which stops heats altogether, and yes also stops the bleeding (ovulation to attract males). Also heats come around once every 6 months and last from 2-4 weeks, unlike how apparently all of this comment section thinks theyre once a month and just for a week (honestly how can u be that misinformed when ur dog will only do it once every 6 months? R u just blind??)

My babygurl was miserable. I had my YaYa-Gabor (Yorkshire Terrier) Spayed after her second heat cycle. I would hand feed her…had an alarm set for every 3 hrs to massage and use warm wash rags on her. I truthfully think I got her spayed for my sanity and stress more so than just ears. She was so mean to her older and younger yorkie brothers they were confused about what she wanted. I actually had to hand feed her and she lost so much of her little weight i consulted after hrs on what to do. It has been almost 2 yrs now and she is still barely tolerant of her brothers but super clingy to me now.
FYI…The best decision & the biggest mistake of Spaying and Neutering all 3 at the same time. Wowwwwwwwwww I had NO idea how difficult that would be and I definitely do not recommend anyone taking on that challenge without help. Trying to split the quality time with each of them watching the other have mom to themselves. The not being able to interact with each other for weeks. OMG 😳 My furbabies behave as if they are only children. Hahahahaaaaaa Please take my advice and make very separate appts. For your own sanity. LOL
The happy ending is …No surprise litters for my babies and I. No more stressful late night relax sessions with a morning headache attached and NO MORE DIAPERS AND TANGLED FUR.

Ah.. Poor Olive… I know this is a year old, but next time you might check to make sure it’s not too tight.. looked a bit restrictive.. they make ones that are elastic which might be more comfy for her. And not sure it’s a good idea to take your dog to the dog park while she’s in heat - if I heard that right. She will attract the wrong kind of attention from all the male dogs if you get my drift…

Our dolfy also went through that stage few months back.. those days were really uncomfortable for her.. n we were also a bit worried caz it lasted for about 3 weeks.. but finally everything was back to normal..👍

Thats fairly normal, a dogs HEAT cycle will come once every 6 months, its when they’re most fertile and ready to breed. They can last between 2-4 weeks and in this time can be aggressive (mostly snappy to other dogs) and sensitive, however shouldn’t be in pain (if she is, take her to a vet because thats not normal)
Don’t misunderstand this heat cycle for a humans period cycle because they’re different and you should not treat ur dog the same. Your dog is not a human. A woman on her period is not getting ready to "breed" in fact she is most non fertile then, and a period is to clean out her reproductive areas, thats why she bleeds.
Unless you plan to breed her, i’d advice to get her desexed, it will stop these heat cycles, prevent unwanted pregnancies and just be a lot nicer for her.

Olive had her first cycle at 8 month. You can spay your dogs as soon as they turn 6 month 😊

A doggie toilet can also be a canalized shower tray/shower base. Dogs should never use a human toilet, because it is dangerous for them, not only difficult. Respect all Dog's needs ! OUR DOGS ARE OUR CHILDREN, OUR MOST BELOVED FAMILY !
