This procedure is used extensively in heavy equipment repair where 100% full penetration is required. A lot of bucket and blade cutting edges and router bits are replaced this way. This is also a great method to help control and counter act warpage. Another good one my man, I got a like button to go batter about.
As a Licensed Engineer (with a lot of hands on building experience) I have to say, this guy does it right. To the point, informational videos and a bit of humor. Keep up the good work!
I’m thankful for the sponsors providing the machines and consumables to do the content. It’s also nice to see new machines capabilities without having to buy it. I don’t doubt anyone on the welding side of the trio here could make any of the welds with basic machines, but maybe show some of these guy’s learning how to weld on a basic mig or stick like they have at home. Every now and then, you know. No pulse mig, no slope adjustment, blah blah..... show Joe what he can do with a Lincoln 180.....and I mean the limits of what he can do, not a butt joint. In the right hands, what can Joe achieve with a basic machine.......because that’s what Joe has while watching these vids. He wants to learn, but he can’t watch a pulse video and go try it for himself. And on topic, nailed it Jason..... killer job as always.
Hmmm, that crisp audio when you lit up. Noice n tonight governor. I take it the camera gangsta didn't want to shoot from above during that gouge pass? That new torch looks like a champ.
Bob Moffatt hey man. Hope you’re ok. This dude is awesome though. But miss the jokes and your steady welds. But again this guy is legit. Love his tutorials.
Thanks for the thorough explanation of the weld, welding process, weld symbol and executing the demonstration! I have wasted a lot of time watching bad videos on the tube so keep up the good work!
You know you're my hero Jason, and you also know that us welders are are ambmcdextreeoust too! Some of us can even use a mirror to weld around a tight corner, X-ray quality. Good stuff brother, good stuff.
Thanks to every one and their time and effort, your all very much appreciated. I learned a couple things. I’m trying to weld “forehand” and “backhand” with my dominant right hand, as well as my left, doing the same. Thanks for the confirmation to practice them both. Good job on the plate..
Another Great video! Gouging with plasma works great for small welds or cutting tacks but still like clean carbon arc for down hill /overhead weld removal. 💥🔥😎
Nice work. Where are the video's of all the dude's who like to run their rod holsters. Those who talk shit are usually the ones that can't do shit. Again great video. Good info
Especially the ones who say they have 20+ years in the trade and act like they know everything, and they wonder why some of the younger guys aren't interested in the skilled trades. The toxicity is real.
Thats right the one who opens there mouth when Jason is doing these very helpfull videos for guys just getting started or guys that havent done any heavy plate work are keyboard commandos..let them upload a video of a full pen weld and cut n etch!!!
Understand the left handed remark. It's definitely different if you're not used to it. Had to do some lefty welding on a 12" flanged cross yesterday. Wasn't that pretty but it'll hold the fire pump water.
Great left hand weld my friend.! Say...dont you use those old air grinders anymore??? They look like the jack-hammer used to break concrete and sound quite the same but miniaturized for the weld shop to clean slag off the welds.
Have you guys done a video specifically on plasma cutting and gouging? Settings consumables etc? You’d be surprised how many shops won’t teach you anything .... all about production ... pour wire faster FaSTeR FASTER!
I have to ask why did you gouge up hill with the plasma cutter. I would think that would lend your tip to slag drip. I would have run down. I'm just asking to learn.
I know that this has nothing to do with this video but I want to get into TIG welding but I dont have a big bugget at most $1000 at most. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on good tig or multiprocess welders that will last a long time and will be reliable. Thanks
I am in a welding class and while practicing we had to switch to our other hand (I am right handed)...…...…….. don't know why but I welded better with my left hand! Still learning.
Great video. I've never seen that approach to getting full penetration. Question: Does it make any difference what direction you gouge? I was thinking I'd rather shoot that stuff downward instead of up in the air where it might land on my head.
Can you do a video using carbon gouging removing a backing strap of a single vee groove weld? My school requires us to use gouging to get experience instead of using a gas torch.
@@thomaswright5100 there is a certain way to prep, a lot of people do it wrong and I want to see how they do it. And it's a 60° bevel so 30° on both plates.
I definitely wouldnt break out the plasma for something that short, probably would have had it don't with the grinder by the time I drug it to the work. However, if I had a few feet of weld to do this way it would most definitely be the way to go. It's one of the reasons I like this channel he likes to show alot of different ways to get it done. Also, if your on a job, their procedure may call for that because that's what they expect you to do!
it's a mechanical soapstone pencil (guessing the name, not too sure what the actual name is) but u can pick em up at grainger or a store like it. real nice to use and u don't need to file the soapstone to a point as it's already a thin size. it's worth the price I'd say
It is unclear why a plasma cutter, resulting great heat and molten build up, is used over a rotary grinder or a die grinder for a 1/8" cut. Welding is walking that fine line of fusion vs. damaging the ductility of the parent material. Good video.
WEAPON_X it’s the AWS A2.4 weld symbol for a single V bevel. Which is correct for the joint we are welding and is outlined in the D1.1:2015 code book. The symbol you wrote is just a single bevel. It wouldn’t work for this joint.

I’d like to see this same weld done without the plasma gouge and using gouging rods instead.

Are we ever going to see Bob Moffatt enter the stage from the left, again ? Thank you Weld.com team for your generosity on educating us.

Left handed?? Pfft. Bob Moffat coulda made that weld with his feet!
Bob _is_ a southpaw. But, yes, he could have held the stinger in his teeth and punched that puppy in there.
as a hobby welder I'm also using my left hand for first stick tasks like flat position. I think if you have the chance, you should train both hands.

I would like to see some bend tests and how to you prep your test plates.
Grind your plates and cut 45 degree angles on both plates on the edge I believe

Sweet video. Excellent. Ty
At 5min 20secs, you say you have to remove the carbon deposits, plasma gouging does not leave carbon deposits as there is no carbon rod used
shouldnt there be concern with internal undercut on a bevel causing slag deposits?
Dude you’re a good welder
I like the plasma gouger
ARE ALL THE WELDS 7018? IS THERE ANY 6010 IN THERE/ THANKS
Superb
@11:04 look at the trapped slag from the acid revealing it
Do you guys have any abrasive pads that have stick on replaceable faces I thought i saw one but I can’t find the video or comment i left about them
Why would you gouge up and not down?
If one doesn't have a plasma torch handy is using only the hard rock grinder acceptable to gouge out the back side? Seems to me it should be.

mad crazy steady as rock cool.... now do that for 80 feet, within a day... 5/8 deep
Is there a reason for going up ?
On the left handed root you trapped some slag mid way up
