o the movie was riddles with mistakes. Doubled glazed windows, the four day battle lasting one day, the raid on Chatham portraid as a night time operation. The English flying the Union Jack I personally found the most annoying. But seeing its budget they did pretty well. Its about time we remember to be proud of our past as well. De Ruijter was and should still be still an inspiration.
What I found annoying was the fact there there was no such thing as a Dutchman in the Republic, nor was their any sense of nationalism. nor was there really religious freedom or anything like that, at least not in the sense that we know it today (it was born out of necessity and it had to be done secretly and by paying extra money). But they still act like it is, like they fought for their freedom against the Spanish (they never saw the spanish king as their oppresor). It's riddled with anachronism and missplaced patriotism. but it was still an alright movie
I often wondered about that. Here is 7 little provinces taking on the known world. The only ally you have are the other provinces. They probably did not think of themselfes as Dutch but there would have been a sence of loyalty and connection to the other 6 provinces. Lets call it a proto Dutch identity. A wonderous people we are, a German united us to stand up and free ourselves from tirany. A Frenchman showed us that we are one people.
Actually, the spanish were seen as opressor, when speaking mostly religious wise (protestant dutch v catholic spain), which lead to the Dutch Revolt, and while the anthem may say we honored the Spanish king, those lyrics were written from the viewpoint of William of Orange, who didnt dislike the Spanish king, but did want a protestant Netherlands free of catholic spain (but thats just putting it down in basics.) ua-cam.com/video/g1AMiQmApQQ/v-deo.html
@@Panzerkuchen The spanish told us to stay catholic and fear the bishops, we decide how we pray to god. We dont need to pay any tax to madrid and pay for the pope in rome. And nobody not in Madrid in London or in Bruxelles will demand us to do as they tell us to. Because we are free dutchmen.
This îs a true man of state...this look and speech.
