- In this video, I take you through a step-by-step process to fit a chrome cover to a humbucker on a Fender Telecaster. This modification is purely aesthetic!
I've watched 3 different videos, seen 3 different techniques. Solder, no solder, silicone, wax on both halves, no wax, tape AND wax only on half. Make up your minds!
Seriously! I have no clue what I’m doing lmao
I just put the tape and silicone and no solder and it sounds fine. I wonder what adding solder would do since its good without it
Well done Ashley, in the first lines of your video you cleared up a mystery for me, and that was that I couldn't find out how the sizes were measured on the covers. you gave that up right at the start and helped me to now buy my nickel cover for my '69 SG. thank you, John.
I’m really glad that it was helpful, John! Thanks.
@@ashleyguitarandpedals hi, if you got a 53mm trembucker or f spaced, does the 52mm work? Or i need a 53mm cover?
I'm a simple man... I see a new upload from Ashley Holt, I watch, I give it a 👍
That helped me a lot
Thx bro
Lot's of love from Brazil

Great job man! Thanks for tip! 👏👍
Thanks for that bud 👍🏻 lovely guitar 👍🏻
If you use electrical tape instead of the parcel tape do you still have to use wax?
Awesome video! Question.. how does one remove the tone and volume knobs off of this specific tele? I have the same one and I wanted to replace the stock knobs with gold ones but I have no idea how to remove them as there are no visible screws on the knobs themselves.
Thanks. If I remember rightly, they were just pushed on tight, so cane off when I pulled them 👍
I bought new PUs for my Epi LP, Open coil zebras. I absolutely love their look! ❤👍😁
Ooh! I love a zebra! 👍🙌🏻
Nice video, thank you. I noticed you used regular candle wax but did not re-heat the pickup cover to melt the wax to create a seal with the cover and the humbucker. Is that not needed? Others have done this. The tape is to prevent the squeal? The wax is to prevent the cover from rattling? Is that correct? I see some people use dabs of silicone on the tap to hold the pickup cover in place. Is there a reason you used the wax? Thanks, from Canada!
Hi! It was simply what I had available at the time 🙌🏻 I believe there are lots of ways of doing it and I certainly wouldn’t take my video as a professional instruction - I haven’t had any issues with it since though 👍 Let me know how you get on if you do it 🙌🏻
My humbuckers havnt got the screws in them, can I still use covers? Which ones should I cover?
Can I use a melting candle?
Hey frienddddddd love the video :))))
but i gotta ask?
i wanna do the same thing to my Strat, but i can't choose which size to buy.
the 52mm cover? or the 50mm cover?
can you help me out?
Hi. Thanks! You’ll need to measure the distance between the screws on the pickup as I did in the video - that will tell you the size that you need 👍
Hi, what type of soldering iron did you use? Other people are saying you need a powerful one to get the solder to attach to the cover but yours looked just like a normal household one. Thanks.
FezzantPlucka Hi! It was a normal household one, but wasn’t the best - I bought a new household kit and it is far better! The projects I have done since have been loads easier - Soldering Iron Kit,WOWGO 60W... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PLX3BL8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Some things are best done with a more powerful soldering iron, like attaching ground wires to amp chassis, or covers on pups.
what is the function of the candle?
sorry I can't hear your video well
Brilliant!
Is the solder at the end necessary? I've seen threads that you don't need to do it. I know it's better to do it, but do you have to?
My understanding was that it was for grounding. It all turned out well the way that I did it - I haven’t tried another way yet. Hope that helps!

Greetings! 👋🏻
When using a closed faced cover (cover with no holes) would you put tape over both sets of poles?
I’ve never done that, so I’m not sure! Instinctively, I want to say yes - but it may not be necessary. If I find out the answer, I’ll update my reply 👍
@@ashleyguitarandpedals another youtube expert teaching the world there 1% of knoledge that they learned from watching other youtube videos
I wouldn't have added all that tape and wax. It's not necessary. If anything it's gonna affect your sound negatively. You don't even need to solder. Just put a tiny dab of silicone on the inside of the bucker cover and then a beed of silicone on both long sides once it's pushed on and attached. I set kitchen counter tops, vanities, toilets etc with silicone. those covers will never vibrate or come off until you're ready to remove them 👍🏼💯
Did you use soldering paste to solder the covers?
Hi. No - I simply soldered directly.
I just bought a loaded pickguard HSS and they forgot to add the cover to the bridge hum bucker, so I need to do this,so two pieces i tape , but do you really need the wax ? just curious , thanks fir the video and subscribed 👍
If I were you, I would try without the wax and see what happens ... I’m no expert and I am sure there must be easier ways to do it than my way! 😂🤦🏻♂️
can I avoid soldering by just using a tape to fix the cover?
You’d be risking metallic vibration and/or microphonics 😬
Does it makes the pickup sounds different ?
I didn’t notice any change, but some people say it does - very much down to personal preference and opinion!
What would happen if I install the cover with no solders and tape on the lower coil?
You might find that it squeals when you plug it in. Without solder, you might have grounding issues - buzzing.
Can I use super strong glue instead of soldering it?
No, the solder acts as the grounding for the metal cover (yes they do need to be grounded). Just get some sandpaper and scratch the sides of the baseplate and the inside of the pickup cover so that the solder sticks on.
@@dryproblem7988 Not true at all. I have used silicone to "glue" the cover on. It works just fine.
Just use dabs of silicone.
@@popsfereal Did you solder the cover to the baseplate after that?
@@popsfereal humbuckers that come with covers from manufacturers like Dimarzio are soldered not just glued, I’m not sure if it actually affects the grounding but I would do it that way
What can i do if i don’t have the screws on the humbucker?
Pls i need reply
Put the cover on any way. Dabs of silicone work fine.
railroad blues...?
It looks better, and more importantly - sounds better withOUT the cover, but if you like the looks and don't mind a blanket over the highs..?
so he has to show his playing 'chops' in the video, as usual. That is in nearly all the vids about 'technical' subjects.
Easier to use a couple thin smears of silicone- done in 2 minutes.
It works but thats not done right
