Here's a live studio version of the Edith Piaf song Hymne A L'Amour sung half in French, half in English. The French lyrics were written by Piaf and the music by Marguerite Monnot. It was written to Piaf's lover and the love of her life, the French boxer, Marcel Cerdan. On October 28, 1949, Cerdan was killed in the crash of Air France Flight 009 on his way from Paris to New York to come to see her. The fact that Cerdan hated flying but Piaf begged him to take the plane only adds to this tragedy and the mystique of this beautiful song. Piaf recorded it in 1950. Geoffrey Parsons wrote the English lyric, calling it Hymn To Love, first recorded by Kay Starr in 1954.
Olympics and Celine Dion have brought a 75-year old hit back to life. We'll be hearing a lot more of this hymn in 2024.
I put this up on Thursday little knowing it was about to be given a beautiful airing by Celine Dion. It's so quintissentailly French I can see why they chose it for the Olympics.

That's really kind of you to say so, thank you. I came to the song via its original singer, Edith Piaf. It's nice to sing in French for a change, I studied it for my degree many years ago, but am just starting to record French songs. Better late than never! Celine's version at the Olympics was epic, needless to say!

This beautiful song cannot be sung in any other language than French....nothing sounds the same. While you did it in that language, I loved it, when you changed to English, it sounded different to me. I'm sorry, but I can't approve of her version. Greetings.
If Celine's version was an ice-cold coca cola with a slice of lemon, served in a crystal goblet, this was warm, flat Panda brand economy cola served in a plastic beaker.
