- The Bronx Whitestone Bridge (Interstate 678) connects the boroughs of Queens and Bronx across the East River. It opened on April 29, 1939. It forms a critical link in the main expressway between points north/west of NYC and JFK Airport.
The Van Wyck Expressway connects all the major highways and boulevards in Queens with JFK Airport. Running north to south, it also forms the only interstate truck route south of the Long Island Expressway. Not only is this route a vital link in the highway network, but it also is one of the busiest routes in all of NYC.
Connecting the Whitestone Bridge with north-central Queens, the Whitestone Expressway was originally built as the Whitestone Parkway in 1939, before being upgraded to its current form. The highway forms part of a critical link to JFK Airport from points north of Queens.

I'm also from Maryland.WE used to travel to Rhode Island to see my grandparents. You can take The turnpike
Exit #11 which is the Garden State Parkway north up to I-287 east back to I 95.It eliminates all the congestion and has a toll at the new Cuomo bridge. Its cheap but a few miles longer.
