I’m in Canada watching this. My opinion is there’s no management from past and present government, this has been going on for years and have spiralled out of control. This should have been clipped at the start. Now it’s just appalling. Everyone wait until the sore is beyond control before administering medication to heal the sore at the offset
What do you expect? Jamaica is a mess. The female reporter's statement about safety and crime are on point, but this goes to show that there are no leadership from the mayor's office all the way down. In any cities or towns you should have a clear, safe space of travel and movement. Side walks are there for the pedestrians, not higglers. This just goes to show the ineptness that the elected officials possessed and should not be allowed as a representatives of the people. What if there is a fire, how does the fire service maneuver/position their vehicles without delays when seconds count? In a segment of the clip, there is a clear view of a three-bank overhead pole-mounted transformer. These transformers are are oil-filled, and could present a fire and life-safety hazards. And, even more, who is to say that these oil-filled transformers are non-PCB or PCB fluid? Where is the leadership from the police and the fire service? These are the things the municipal corporation needs to ironed out, but then again, you are in Jamaica. What the hell do these individuals discussed at their municipal meetings? Do they evaluate hazards, risks and consequences before they weigh and make decision? From the looks of things, it doesn't appeared that way. What a disgrace.
Although it’s inexcusable, the fact is that this is not endemic to Jamaica. Vendors crowding sidewalks happens in every metropolitan area across the world. If there was any simple solution first-world countries would not be suffering just the same.
Yes, we think the sideway must be clear for pedestrians to walk on and also ensure that the manholes are properly covered on the sidewalk. The relevant authority must ensure all vendors have a safe and proper place to sell theirs to the public. When a vendor takes over the sidewalk it endangers member of the public as John public have to walk in the road and sometimes can get hit by oncoming vehicles we must prevent this from happening in Jamaica.
i had the same experience last night in my town.when I said this vendor had his goods in the road I am not exaggerating !it was not on the sidewalk and there was no police to solve the problem. the oncoming traffic was disrupted !I was annoyed !
This is a good topic and government need to address these issues. Side walk are for people to walk and because venders take over the sidewalks people get use to walking in the street.
1st. Herman is a bit too aggressive with how he greets Sandy. 2nd. Allow her to finish talk before adding points to hers. 3rd. This is an issue that has been plaguing all persons who use these side walks. There are better ways to deal with these problems.
easy fix we need 5 standard sizes kiosks . That's looks nice this is the only way they can . trade. locate the spot , then they get permit to set up shop.
In 1073 4 dollars was a lot of money. I was going to high school then and my sister and I got 3 dollars for the both of us as lunch . We ate lunch and had more leave for evening. Now for crying out loud this 2022 going 2023 . We sound like we are only going back ways
I agree on changes cus I visited Jamaica over a year ago & I was very upset. Due to this overcrowded sidewalks with vendors. My son was attacked by a male vendor in Montego Bay after he was yelled @ & hitting him when accidentally stepped on his Tshirt in which was put out with no where barely to walk. I had to involved the police & the other vendors wanted to attacked several of us due to the dispute over the matter. Something really needs to be done about it . He took off with his goods & hide it to avoiding the police from taking it away from him & possibly being arrested from the assault to a minor tourist little boy in which was frightening & @ least an usual setting or even seeing vendors on the sidewalk. I hope changes do come about cus this can caused even death when pedestrian have walk into the streets instead of the sidewalk

Very nice report! If the local goverment wants to sanction sidewalk vendoring, then they need to close down the streets, to allow pedestrian shoppers to shop for goods. I wonder if some entity is collecting "rental fees" from every sidewalk vendor.
where is the vision... in festive season as now... dedicates a few streets as pedestrians only... for vendors and shoppers...don't try to direct shoppers to big business...allow the small man to live... as he also pays taxes... let the poor be able to shop from fellow poor.... have a heart

You think? Delivery drivers can't even park on the road side on Princess street or even drive on the very road of Beckford street in Downtown Kingston.
It started in the 80s , after a very permissive Christmas Market downtown one particular year, the Vendors just stayed put and grew in numbers henceforth.
Government s on private sectors. Do something for your s citizen s. Merry Christmas Jamaica. We love you all. On Iam praying for Jamaican people. Plea the blood of Jesus Christ over Jamaica now At the four corners. Jamaica belongs to Jesus. Too much killing s. Too much innocents blood Must end now
Them have shop but they're not using it to them when they're on the street they sell more, what the government have to is starting charging anyone who buy from,if they don't have anybody buying then they have to go in the market including myself lol
This is just greedy and taking over pathways, side walks. Vendors are so greedy and have no consideration therein to pedestrians, the disabled, children, elderly, and children who needs to used the side walk daily. Then cars and other vehicles are and will pulled up to conduct transaction with vendors and further blocking the path from citizens and visitors using the side walk It is not just the sidewalks, take for instance and example; the beach at hellshire, where these vendors built out to the sea and no where to walk aling the sand. Very horrible and the government and municipalities are not doing anything and implementing charges to restore the beachfront and sand so beach goers can enjoy the beach and decided which vendor's they want to go to without the hassler and hassling from persons harassing visitors to the beach. Plus these built bricks and rocks are slippery and green with algae and are sharpe to cause bodily harm Let us see if there will be any changes, for talk and media reporting are just yesterday's news to garner attention and raised red flags with no effective response thereto and until someone life is taken, then maybe something is and will be done Look at the educational system, lacking consistency to provide quality and equitable education for its citizens and their children from generation to generations that there has been no changes; but decline. Hence song's like Dunce that will further ignite the mindset of those children who sees themselves as such and not wanting to rise above what is being told they are. Just saying
I admire your approach we do need some no no nonse investigative reporter . I want you to do a story on corruption in the public sector..starting point. Illegal drivers license. I say this because you touched on lights connected in certain vending Area.
It's reporting like this TVJ needs to do more of , for each sidewalk, there needs to be a ramp on n a ramp off for wheelchairs... Far too long, NWA, KSMC, NEPA has been given a free ride...They always approve a project then 6 months after it was the wrong move, like the park for Portmore , why use 25 acres of land for a park while across the street at Portmore Mall there is a serious transport issue....Why not use 15 acre for the park 10 acre for a transport centre, 5 acre of the 10 u would use now n set aside the other for future transport use... This would be the main transport centre for Portmore taxis buses etc...Ask the Local Government, NWA, Parish Council etc why use the 25 acre for a park alone🤔🤔. ...
Too many lawlessness in jamaica and is the cause of these problems that the country faces, And these politicians give the people these structures for their own benefit knowing that it is s illegal to sell on the side walks. Who is responsible for ensuring that the sidewalks are safe for pedestrians to walk?
Jamaica has no urban planning, no enforcement. People constructing large and small business right at the edge of the road. Even very large buildings are being constructed with no parking lots.
If these people did have any vision, they would see vending touristism, tourists not only go places to be in hotels but they also excited about what the local market people are doing and selling, money can mek
You know something. There is more to this than reporting the illegality of sidewalk vending. Do you see how at the end of the report it boils down to "crabcity" being relocated. That is the real issue here but it could not be done in isolation. So let us talk about all the other areas then return to the real problem. And no this is not saying sidewalk occupation is not a real issue for safety but let us be fair to the disenfranchised. Another thing why are we bemoaning $4.00 when fines for corrupt politicians are $1.00 and we are not asking for those laws to change.
Go have a look on Carter Avenue off Hagley Park Road. There is a gigantic shop and restaurant on one side of the road and on the opposite side you have a welding shop and a garage. This sits next to the Ministry of Local Government , it is only a wall that separates these illegal shops from the Ministry..
Am fully agree to this because it not lie you on the road no way to walk you dont have any where to walk and wen u do walking u bounced on there goods they cuss u n u dont have any where to walk the Gorment must put a stop to it
The side walk is for th feet walkers no vendeing on the side walk third world country shame on the pm on mp no vote for jlp nor pnp no vote for peter nor paul
Not only are vending on side walk a problem but THE LACK OF MAINTENANCE OF BUSHES that grows out on the way to small side walks that force people to walk in road is worse..no consideration for People who walk..nothing more disturbing than this careless act..
Government cannot be partial on sidewalks, 90% or more of Jamaican roads have no sidewalk, be impartial on where sidewalks are developed then ask people to keep them free for walking.
This problem is happening for a long long time. Why didn't the city did not get that problem solved a long time ago? All they have to do was to mark out a five-foot width space for the sidewalk. All over the world, people sell on the sidewalk .and once they don't block the sidewalk .no one complaint. I think the Jamaica Government is more interested in taking off people who do not have a permit. If illegal vending is a find. So may I ask Why are the police taking vendors' goods? Is it not illegal for police to take the vendor's things. ? How come that question did not ask in that interview,? And what does the police do with venders stuff when they took it?
Its always a choice between removing vendors or pedestrians.. How about removing the vehicles? We dont need a car driving on every inch of land space.. Sometimes the car can park and the owners can take a walk
@niggamancer too much space for vehicles not enough space for vendors and not enough space for pedestrians.. Lets take one of the traffic lanes and turn it into a side walk then so it will be built for pedestrians and meet your requirements.. If all the space downtown built for vehicles and all the market space you realize that most of the space is dedicated to vehicles and little to no space dedicated to vendors.. Thats y them end up on the side walk in the first place
We have something here in America called Swap Shop flea market don't you all have a big field where they can set up a big tent and all those vendors can gather in them and sell their products. And it is dangerous to be out there in the middle on the sidewalk selling products where someone can get hit by a car
I came down 10 days ago I went to MayPen market with my friend there is no place to walk . Lucky for some of us most of us hve a job or business these people have no other way to make a living. Even though I was run over by a cart I had to think about why they had to be out there it not joy going to the Jamaica market at all too much stress
You journalist youth reporters younger report on poor people problem I understand that they are doing on the side of is not right and they need to fix that yeah I'll let everybody live what a point is what I'm saying you guys never come out on talk about corruption you never come out and talk about the bigger problem the big people problems Uptown problem you never talk about the court we'll find out the airport you never generally send those things that
Leave the vendors alone. Most dont make much $ and need the space. The system works fine. Im just a visitor but leave them poor people alone. Or fix the situation and have space for them
Goes to show you are not a pedestrian, especially in Downtown Kingston. Yet the markets are empty. It's the Government that must fix the markets. Lack of markets are the main ventors problem. Not the sidewalk.
when them take off these poor Jamaicans of the street side, were the government gonna put them? Jamaica is a third world country in which there's not enough jobs here for Jamaican people to survive. our enconomy has become weeker since so call independent because our dollar keeps falling.i think if the government should take them off the street side, provide somewhere that business can be lucrative for them.
It's the poor children I feel sorry for coming home from school in single file and the taxi drivers just speed past them like they are nothing and sometimes I see the children walking 2 or 4 abreast and I slow down and give them pass because where are they supposed to walk? Jamaica has so much revenue to make so much money to make especially in parking and fines, so much money can be made for people to park properly around shopping precincts and not just on zebra crossings and on yellow lines ...Jamaica has a long way to go...
They’re talking about the people I’m selling out there. They still go there and collect Market St from them. They still take money from them gotta pay wherever you say you have to pay a fee.
Too much land in Jamaica for all these sidewalks to be a vending area this is a serious issue for emergency veicles children and the elderly and if you walk on top of their products you know what next
Point made. Making a mountain out of a mole hill though. Asia has a billion people navigating roads and life. Work with each other as we have always done...naturally with some level-headedness.

SMH!! Sidewalks are for walking. How is this allowed? Oh... I forgot we're talking about Jamaica 🤣🤣🤣
See my response below. A country without vision.
The government needs to need to build a place for vendors it’s a most built a place for vendors so they can come off the side walking
even if the government build a new place for all roadside vendors they are not going to use it. in this country the tail wags the dog
Sidewalk most leave open most for people that walking safety for all we have to leave Space for fire fighters

Nope
I came down 10 days ago I went to MayPen market with my friend there is no place to walk . Lucky for some of us most of us hve a job or business these people have no other way to make a living. Even though I was run over by a cart I had to think about why they had to be out there it not joy going to the Jamaica market at all too much stress
You journalist youth reporters younger report on poor people problem I understand that they are doing on the side of is not right and they need to fix that yeah I'll let everybody live what a point is what I'm saying you guys never come out on talk about corruption you never come out and talk about the bigger problem the big people problems Uptown problem you never talk about the court we'll find out the airport you never generally send those things that
So true they are a big supporter of the white collar criminals!
Leave the vendors alone. Most dont make much $ and need the space. The system works fine. Im just a visitor but leave them poor people alone. Or fix the situation and have space for them
I agree the crime is worse leave the vendors alone
Goes to show you are not a pedestrian, especially in Downtown Kingston.
Yet the markets are empty. It's the Government that must fix the markets. Lack of markets are the main ventors problem. Not the sidewalk.
All the government care about is the money that generated from these vendors pockets
You would let Sandy talk it would be nice.
when them take off these poor Jamaicans of the street side, were the government gonna put them?
May Allah help us
Jamaica has no accessibility for people with wheel chair so stop chat rubbish
Too much land in Jamaica for all these sidewalks to be a vending area this is a serious issue for emergency veicles children and the elderly and if you walk on top of their products you know what next
It the money I know
Get them off the sidewalks, and pls find a proper place for them.
Point made. Making a mountain out of a mole hill though. Asia has a billion people navigating roads and life. Work with each other as we have always done...naturally with some level-headedness.
