Guy Miner here: I’ve used handheld primer seaters and press-mounted primer seaters, but I’d never tried a bench-mounted unit. Let’s take a look at the Forster Co-Ax Primer Seater!

I would like to see a "shootout" between primer seating tools. From something like this and an RCBS all the way to a primalrights seater. Same gun, same load. Groups shot between each primer tool.

I have had mine since the late 1990's and love it! The setup goes much faster with practice and the precise feel and control is pleasing. I like the way the primers stack as well for safety reasons, no need to elaborate.

I got a Forster Co-Ax priming tool when I started loading for an M1A. It’s very important that the primer sits a couple thousandths *below* the case head for that rifle. This gives me more leverage while still providing good “feel” when the primer is seated. I don’t use it for pistol cartridges, but any bottlenecked rifle case get primed with this.
Another thing I like is that the case mouth is pointed away from you. I’ve never set off a primer pushing it into a case, but this tool gives me some peace of mind.

I picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago and it works great. I primed qty250 of 223 brass in no time. Saved my hand from getting cramped up. Scheels had a great price on these. Make sure you get the tray they show in the video too.

Had one for a couple of yrs now, went thru a bit of a learning curve with the loading of the tube and a brainfart or two with that in handling it. The tray works OK, can be awkward to use with 100 primers in it, be nice if it had a cover. Some folk recommended mounting it on an angled board, I'd agree with that, makes things easier to see. Functionally, it sets up easy enough, operates consistently. I have an RCBS to try out now, see if maybe it is any better in loading the tube, don't know til you try.

I have one of these and I like it. What I did was create a mount for it. I used a 4x4 and cut a slope in it so the tool sits on a sloped base. Mine is now not level but that's on purpose. It's aimed slightly up.
Also with the sold separately tray you can load the tubes in seconds.

Considering precision reloading was mentioned, it would be great to see micrometer etc measurements regarding consistency of outcome such as primer depth or feel.

I think I got mine in the early 1980s it's not my everyday tool for priming but for antique cartridges like balloon head brass for black powder cartridges ie., 32 S&W, 38 S&W 41 Long Colt and 45 Colt for heeled bullets or inside lubricated the adjustable jaws are perfect. It's a small niche in reloading but this is the perfect tool.

I have mine for quite a while now. Love the adjustable jaws feature, but adjusting can be a bit slow going. I was expecting better feel seating primers than I am experiencing, but I haven’t used it a lot, maybe because I like the feel of other tools more. It’s a tool that I really want to like more. I generally like hand priming better for versatility and feel, but I am enjoying the new (to me) Lee bench prime.

  • @D70340

Its a good priming tool. I just didn`t care to have to monkey around with their 3-way adjustable shell holder, so i bought the RCBS bench priming tool instead. I found, with the RCBS bench primer tool model, all my priming tubes interchange between my progressive presses, AND, my bench priming tool. So, if i ever needed more tubes (for either) to reload with without stopping my reloading sessions to load more primers, it works out both ways between my presses and bench priming tool. Not to mention, the RCBS bench priming tool seems much more robust and better made. I do have to say, i like how quick you can load the primers in the Forster bench priming tool. Pretty slick. But i do have a electronic primer tube filler, so mine is super quick, too.

I have had a different experience with the Forster than most reviewers. I hate mine. I had a lot better luck with the cheapo Lee bench primer. I can’t get it to prime consistently. I’ve watched countless videos and tried everything. Frustrating especially how expensive primers are. I’m selling this thing and might try the rcbs or go back to the Lee. Very disappointed in it.

Although it looks clever, a few months ago, I purchased a PRIMAL RIGHTS CPS primer seater unit. It you would have caught me a few months ago, I am sure I would have gotten this unit, all in efforts to get away from wrecking my hand with the tested, proven RCBS hand priming tool. The RCBS hand primer works great, but I am getting old these days lol. When I seen the CPS (I think that is the initials) for it, I jumped on it and has been great on not beating the daylights out of my work out hands. But I can absolutely see this unit in today's video helping 1000's of people save their hands, and not break the bank like the CPS unit costs...

I have not had good results with the old Lee and RCBS hand Priming tools with 5.56/.223 LAKE CITY Federal, GGG and RWS MILSPEC brass cases with crimp removed using a Lyman crimp remover. Primers would misalign and crush 50% of time. I bought the Forster to solve this and have the same issues. It is fine for commercial brass, but needs perfect setup. I have found the only tool that works is the LEE RAM PRIME in a tight press. This holds the primer in a cup and presents it supported into the brass. It takes ages single loading each primer. I’m in the UK so no semi autos and components hard to get, otherwise I would not bother with crimped brass. My friend has the RCBS APS bench tool with plastic strips holding the primers and he swears by it for MIL CRIMP cases in several calibres 5.56, 6.5X55, 7.5X55 Swiss, 7.62 NATO and 54R, 8mm Mauser.

For $150 I'll keep my Lyman hand primer and it's faster too.

Don't like it because it appears to not limit the distance or pressure applied to the primer. This uses old school technology and really has not improved the state of the art in primer seating. So it is not any better than any other seater.

If it's $50 it's fine. If it's $150 then I can't see the value. I'll have to look up the price and see.

If you have cases with tight primer pockets, this tool is quite poor. Little feel and not enough leverage. Inconsistent depth. I struggled with it for a week and then gave it away when I got my RCBS bench seater.

I own one and it is a piece of trash. Great concept, but the execution is atrocious.
The flip tray is completely ineffective; it doesn't flip the primers. The primers sometimes flip themselves as they slide out of the feed tube and onto the face of the seater. They do NOT slide easily out of the tray and into the tube (when you use more than 10 primers), like in the video... pretty sure that is why he is only using 10 primers.
I've ruined a bunch of primers (then had to remove them) because they were pressed in backwards out sideways. I was able to reproduce the problem MANY times and WATCHED the primer flip as it dropped out of the tube and onto the seater face.
Lastly, the jaws do not properly grab the rim of some of my cases (I only use Lapua and Norma brass and load common calibers). I'm using the right side (depending on rim thickness, you flip them over), but I tried both sides regardless. The jaws on my CoAx Press grab them fine; but not on this primer... either the jaws lack the clearance to get the rim in, or it is so sloppy that it won't hold the case well enough to seat the primer. I've had to force the case into the seater face wit one hand while pushing the lever down with the other, just to try to get them to seat.
This piece of equipment is garbage.

If your cohost isn’t interested in doing a real test with data and results you should run an ad for an opening on Gavin Tube. Guy is a recalcitrant dolt.
Sorry I stoped in to be disappointed again.
